The best TMNT game for most players is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge: it makes the classic side-scrolling beat-’em-up feel lively and approachable today. For a broader look at the franchise’s older games, The Cowabunga Collection is the most convenient entry point, compiling 13 Konami titles. This ranking weighs how each game plays now, how distinctive its take on the Turtles is, its historical importance, and how readily a new player can approach it. The order is editorial, not definitive; genre preference, nostalgia, and available platform can change the best choice for you.

10. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan

Mutants in Manhattan stands apart from the classic side-scrollers with a 3D action-brawler format. PlatinumGames lists four-player online co-op and a North American release date of May 24, 2016. Activision’s launch announcement lists Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC (digital only). Its distinctive 3D approach earns it a place here, though players seeking the immediacy of a 2D arcade-style brawler may prefer another entry.

9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters

This fighting-game branch gives the Turtles a different kind of contest: one-on-one bouts rather than a team moving through stages. It broadens a list otherwise weighted toward action and beat-’em-ups, and is a natural pick for players who want a TMNT game built around fighting-game matchups. The title appeared on multiple platforms in different versions; this ranking does not treat those releases as identical, and the collection discussed below includes the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis versions.

#1 Best Overall

  • HIGHLY POSEABLE: Each Turtle figure is highly poseable with 12 points of articulation for battle action poses

  • COLLECT THEM ALL: Collect all the TMNT Mutant Mayhem action figures, sets and accessories from Playmates Toys, your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Toy Headquarters

8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989)

The original arcade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles helped establish the franchise’s side-scrolling beat-’em-up identity in games. Its importance is greater than its convenience for a newcomer: the action is rooted in arcade-era design, and the arcade game is not the same release as the later NES game that shares its name. The arcade version is included in The Cowabunga Collection.

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist

A Sega Genesis beat-’em-up, The Hyperstone Heist is a useful alternative for players curious about how the Turtles’ arcade-style action translated to a home console. It offers a different release from the arcade and Nintendo games, rather than simply being another name for one of them. The Cowabunga Collection includes it, making it easier to compare with other classic entries where that collection is available.

  • Every Turtle is authentically sculpted and decorated as he appeared in the hit 1980's animated TV show.

6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)

The 1989 NES game is an action-platform adventure, not a port of the arcade beat-’em-up. Its mix of side-scrolling stages and overhead exploration gives it a markedly different rhythm from the games above. It can be demanding and less immediately welcoming than a modern brawler, but its unusual structure makes it one of the franchise’s most memorable early designs. It is included in The Cowabunga Collection.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project brings the series back to side-scrolling beat-’em-up action on NES. It is a strong classic pick for players who want a more direct stage-by-stage brawl than the original NES game offers. The Cowabunga Collection includes this release, alongside other versions and genres, so a new player can sample the franchise beyond its best-known arcade style.

Rank #3

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time

Turtles in Time is one of the defining classic TMNT beat-’em-ups, built around co-op action and a run through time-hopping stages. Its arcade version and SNES version are separate releases, and both appear in The Cowabunga Collection. That distinction matters: the collection provides access to multiple versions, not a single universal edition of the game.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

Shredder’s Revenge is a modern standalone beat-’em-up that draws on the classic side-scrolling formula. It is the clearest recommendation for someone who wants one contemporary TMNT game rather than a library of older releases. Meristation reviewed it as a homage to the older games; that is one outlet’s critical description, not an objective measure of quality. Meristation’s review discusses that connection.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game

The original arcade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a landmark starting point for the franchise’s cooperative brawling. Its clear team-based action is easy to understand, and its historical role makes it essential context for later entries. Its arcade design can feel more limited than a newer game, so its high placement reflects influence and identity as well as present-day accessibility.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection

The Cowabunga Collection takes the top spot as the best all-around way to explore the classic Konami games, rather than as one standalone game. Konami’s 2022 announcement says the package contains 13 titles and includes archival extras. Its selection spans arcade beat-’em-ups, console action-platform games, and fighting games, making it useful for newcomers and longtime fans alike. It is not every TMNT game ever released and does not include Shredder’s Revenge.

The collection and Shredder’s Revenge are different products: one is a compilation of classic Konami games; the other is a modern standalone beat-’em-up. See Konami’s official collection announcement for the package details. A US PlayStation collection page verifies a platform-specific listing, but current price, stock, and physical or digital format can vary by region and retailer. Check the store for your platform before buying.

Which TMNT game should you play first?

  • For a modern standalone brawler: Start with Shredder’s Revenge.
  • To sample classic games across genres: Choose The Cowabunga Collection, after confirming it is available for your platform and region.
  • For arcade-era cooperative action: Try Turtles in Time or the original arcade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • For a different, more exploratory classic: Try the NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, keeping in mind that it is an action-platform game rather than a beat-’em-up.
  • For 3D action and online co-op: Mutants in Manhattan is the outlier; confirm current availability for your platform before seeking it out.

A Nintendo Life ranking offers useful comparison for Nintendo-platform releases, but its scope is not an all-platform ranking. Platform versions and ports can differ, so check which specific release a listing describes.
