Hades is the best all-around Greek mythology game on this list: it makes the myths central to a sharp, character-driven action game. For a more open-world adventure, choose Immortals Fenyx Rising; for a historical Greek setting with mythic encounters, choose Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The ranking weighs how central Greek myth is, how distinctive the gameplay is, how well the world and story are delivered, and how much variety the list offers across genres.
How the ranking works
These games do not all retell Greek myths in the same way. Some build their entire premise around gods and heroes; others use mythological figures in a broader historical or strategy game. The order below favors games where mythology meaningfully shapes the experience, while also making room for different kinds of play. It is an editorial ranking, not a claim of universal consensus.
The 10 best Greek mythology games
1. Hades
Best for: fast action and a character-focused underworld story.
In Hades, Zagreus repeatedly attempts to escape the Underworld, meeting gods and members of his family along the way. Each run feeds into the story, so myth is not just a setting or a collection of enemies: it drives the relationships and the reason to keep going. The result is a myth-first action game with a strong sense of character and momentum.

Its roguelike structure reveals conversations gradually. In a University of Kent article, Latin literature scholar Dunstan Lowe describes the game’s dialogue as a full transcript exceeding 300,000 words, though the retrieved passage does not establish a publication year for that figure. 2. Immortals Fenyx Rising
Best for: a playful action-adventure built directly from Greek legend.
Fenyx faces Typhon in a world populated by Greek gods, heroes, and legendary creatures. Myth is the premise, not a side attraction, and the game mixes combat and exploration with puzzles. Its irreverent tone makes it a good pick for players who want a broad mythic adventure rather than a solemn retelling.
Ubisoft narrative director Jeffrey Yohalem said he wanted to show the gods as “imperfect, flawed, and human” by selecting stories that reveal those qualities. Ubisoft on the myths behind Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Odyssey is chiefly a historical adventure set during the Peloponnesian War, not a myth-first retelling. Its world includes mythical figures and creatures, while the Fate of Atlantis expansion goes further into mythological realms. That distinction matters: choose it for exploration, choices, and a historical Greek backdrop with mythic elements, rather than a story centered exclusively on the gods.
Ubisoft: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
4. Apotheon
Best for: side-scrolling action with a distinctive visual identity.
This 2D action game casts its hero against the divinities and draws its look from ancient Greek black-figure pottery. The visual style makes it stand out from more realistic open worlds, while its direct confrontation with the gods keeps Greek myth at the center of the experience.

5. Age of Mythology
Best for: real-time strategy shaped by multiple mythologies.
Age of Mythology blends Greek, Egyptian, and Norse material in a strategy game where myth informs both the world and its forces. It is a useful alternative to character-led action games: the pleasure comes from managing a faction and using mythological units and powers in tactical play. Historian Dr Ross Clare, quoted by History Hit, says it “constantly plays around with what a strategy game is supposed to be, and plays around with what classical content can do.”

6. A Total War Saga: Troy – Mythos
Best for: large-scale strategy with a mythic layer.
Troy draws on the Trojan War, and the Mythos expansion adds mythic creatures and Elysian warriors to the strategy game. Keep the distinction in mind: those mythological additions belong to the expansion, rather than being a feature to attribute to the base game alone. This is the pick for players who want to handle armies and campaigns rather than control one mythic hero.
7. Titan Quest Anniversary Edition
Best for: action-RPG progression and battles with mythic beasts.
This action RPG takes players through ancient settings, including Greece, and other regions. Its appeal is the familiar action-RPG loop of fighting, collecting, and developing a character, with mythic creatures giving the journey its ancient-world flavor. It is broader than a Greek-only adaptation, but Greece is an important part of its mythic landscape.
8. Homer’s Odyssey
Best for: an interactive adaptation of Odysseus’s journey.
Rank #4
- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!
- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music
- Get additional Health and fall recovery in Assist Mode
- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
Among the games in this ranking, Homer’s Odyssey is the most direct route into the hero’s voyage. It adapts the journey through interactive narrative, puzzles, and card-game elements rather than action combat or a large open world. Choose it if the Odyssey itself is the draw and you are open to a more compact, literary style of play.

Best for: classic city-building in a mythical Greece.
This isometric city-builder turns ancient Greece into a setting for managing a growing city. Its focus is civic planning and resource management, with mythological elements giving the settlement its world and flavor. It offers a very different way to engage with the subject than fighting gods or reenacting heroic journeys.
10. Smite
Best for: competitive multiplayer combat featuring gods and mythic figures.
Smite makes deities and mythological characters playable in a multiplayer battle arena. It is the least like a single-player myth retelling in this ranking: mythology supplies the roster, while competitive matches are the main attraction. It earns a place for genre breadth, especially for readers who would rather face other players than follow a fixed narrative.
Which Greek mythology game should you play?
| What you want | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A story centered on Greek gods and family | Hades | Zagreus’s repeated escape attempts tie the action to the Underworld and its inhabitants. |
| A broad, playful mythic adventure | Immortals Fenyx Rising | Greek legends, gods, and Typhon shape the premise. |
| Historical Greece with mythic encounters | Assassin’s Creed Odyssey | Its main setting is the Peloponnesian War era, with mythic content and a mythology-focused expansion. |
| Strategy instead of action | Age of Mythology or Troy: Mythos | The first combines several mythologies in real-time strategy; the second adds mythic forces through an expansion. |
| A direct journey based on the Odyssey | Homer’s Odyssey | It adapts Odysseus’s voyage as interactive narrative, puzzles, and cards. |
| Myth-inspired multiplayer | Smite | Gods and mythic figures form its playable roster. |
What about God of War and Stray Gods?
Greek-era God of War entries are relevant to Greek mythology, but the 2018 God of War relocates Kratos to a Norse setting; it should not be treated as a Greek-myth game simply because of the series’ earlier history. God of War Ragnarök is also Norse-focused. Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is another possible myth-related choice, but the source coverage used for this ranking does not establish enough detail to compare it fairly with the ten entries above. University of Kent’s discussion of Hades and classical material and DiGRA’s digital library provide broader academic context for myth in games.
