Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStarfield update 1.11.36, released May 15, 2024, added more useful surface maps, finer gameplay settings, ship interior decorating, and new Xbox Series X display controls, alongside a substantial bug-fix pass. This is a retrospective look at that 2024 update—not a description of Starfield’s current patch.
1. Surface maps became more useful for finding places
The update replaced the map’s old surface dots with terrain markings and made points of interest visible. Major-city vendor markers also showed where shops were and could serve as fast-travel destinations from the scanner or surface map. Those changes made the map more than a rough guide to nearby terrain: it could help players locate points of interest and get directly to city vendors. Bethesda’s May 15 release notes and its May 1 overview describe the map changes.

2. Ground, space, and survival settings became more adjustable
Players could tune ground combat separately from ship combat, as well as adjust settings tied to vendor credits, carry capacity, access to ship cargo, food effects, and environmental hazards. Bethesda added Extreme above Very Hard, while allowing players to combine settings to shape their preferred level of challenge. The resulting experience bonus could vary with the chosen settings; the update did not make every custom option a fixed difficulty tier.
Bethesda captured the independent combat controls this way: “Want to make ground combat harder but ship combat easier? You can do just that!” The line appears in the official update notes.

3. Ship interiors gained a decoration mode
Ship Decoration mode brought furnishing customization to ship interiors, drawing on the kind of decorating available at outposts. Bethesda’s overview also described empty hab modules and additional door openings, giving players more freedom to arrange a ship’s interior layout. Together, these additions made ship building about the inside of a vessel as well as its exterior configuration. Bethesda’s May 1 overview and the May 15 notes cover the feature.
4. Traits and appearance could be changed after entering the Unity
After entering the Unity and moving into a new universe, players could change their appearance and Traits. That gave the New Game Plus transition more flexibility: a new universe did not require carrying the same character look and Trait choices forward unchanged. Bethesda introduced this option in its May update overview and listed it in the release notes.
5. Xbox Series X added graphics and performance priorities
On Xbox Series X, players could choose Visuals or Performance priority. Visuals prioritized higher resolution and detail; Performance lowered internal resolution and detail to pursue the selected frame-rate target. The choice therefore involved a trade-off between image quality and frame-rate goals, rather than a free improvement to both.

6. Xbox frame-rate options depended on the display
Bethesda listed target options of 30, 40, 60, or uncapped frames per second when using a variable refresh rate (VRR) display. Without a 120 Hz VRR display, players could select 30 or 60. Bethesda recommended a 120 Hz VRR screen and warned that 60 fps on a non-VRR display could produce screen tearing. These graphics controls were specified for Xbox Series X in the official notes; the available target depended on the display in use.

7. Container and barter menus gained tabs
Tabs made it easier to move through container menus and barter menus. The May 15 summary specifically called out container menus, while Bethesda’s May 1 overview described tabs for both Container and Barter menus. The overview provides the broader description.
8. Players could turn off the dialogue camera
A new option in Settings let players disable the dialogue camera and view conversations from their chosen perspective. This was a small but meaningful choice for players who preferred to keep control of the camera during dialogue. Bethesda listed the toggle in its May 15 notes.

Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
9. The update included a broad stability, graphics, and gameplay fix pass
Bethesda’s release notes listed general stability and performance improvements alongside numerous specific corrections. Examples included awarding scan experience when players harvested or killed flora and fauna, and fixes for visual artifacts associated with upscaling technologies on PC.
These are descriptions of fixes in the patch notes, not independent measurements of their effect. Bethesda supplied no benchmark or quantified performance gain for update 1.11.36.
10. Quest and outpost problems received targeted fixes
The notes included corrections across many named quests and fixes for outpost systems. Examples included cargo-link issues and greenhouse water inputs; other listed problems involved environmental hazards, storage, wires, and structures. These are specific areas addressed in the release notes, not a claim that every quest or outpost issue was resolved. See Bethesda’s complete May 15, 2024 update notes for the full list.
