The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered keeps the 2006 game’s world and core experience, but updates how it looks, moves, sounds and plays. Bethesda describes it as a remaster rather than a remake: the aim was to present the original through modern technology without replacing its older-school character. The biggest changes are in visuals, animation, movement, cameras, progression, interface, audio and included content—not a wholesale rebuilding of every game system.
1. The visuals have been overhauled
Bethesda names Unreal Engine 5 as the technology behind the remaster’s visual enhancements. The studio describes recreated characters, weapons, environmental objects and landscapes, while Xbox Wire also points to new textures and improved landscapes. That describes a substantial visual overhaul; it does not mean that all of the original game’s underlying logic was transferred to Unreal Engine 5. Bethesda’s feature article explains the art and technology changes.
Xbox Wire presented the remaster at launch as running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. That is the launch article’s description, not an independently measured benchmark or a guarantee for every platform and configuration. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement gives that performance framing.
2. Lighting, weather and atmosphere are more detailed
The remaster adds an advanced real-time lighting system and more realistic atmospheric effects. Xbox Wire also lists dynamic time of day and weather effects. The result is a different presentation of familiar places and changing conditions, rather than a new world replacing Cyrodiil.

3. Character faces and dialogue performances have been refreshed
Characters use new base meshes, and Bethesda says lip-sync technology was improved to make dialogue feel more expressive. The studio specifically notes that the updates apply to Khajiits and Argonians as well as more human-looking races.
4. Movement now includes sprinting
Sprinting is a new option, and Bethesda says locomotion and character models were redone from scratch. This gives the remaster a more modern movement feel than the original, even though the change is not a wholesale rewrite of its gameplay systems.

5. Combat has new animation and feedback
Bethesda says combat animations were recreated, with more flourish and clearer separation between upper- and lower-body movement. New combat sound effects, visual effects and hit reactions also make attacks feel more pronounced. These are changes to animation and feedback; the official descriptions do not establish that the combat system itself was replaced.
6. First- and third-person cameras have been revised
Both camera modes were updated, and third-person play received a more extensive overhaul. Bethesda says the third-person view now includes a crosshair and was modernized for playability. The change makes that perspective more usable, but the available descriptions do not claim that the game’s quests or world were redesigned around it.

7. Leveling and balance have been redesigned
The remaster’s leveling system takes inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim, with the stated goal of smoother progression and better balance. Xbox Wire also lists changes to encumbrance, non-combat perks and enemy scaling. The official descriptions do not provide a complete formula-by-formula comparison, so specific claims about removed exploits or the viability of particular builds are not established by those sources.
8. The HUD, menus, map and system interfaces are updated
The interface has been brought up to contemporary standards. Xbox Wire calls out reworked HUD, menus and map, as well as improved interfaces for systems such as Persuasion and Clairvoyance. These updates make navigation and interaction clearer without implying that the underlying activities have all changed.

9. Voices, autosaves and accessibility have changed
New dialogue was recorded, and Bethesda says races that previously shared voices now have distinct-sounding voices. The launch message clarifies that original voices remain alongside some newly recorded ones; the remaster did not replace every line. Xbox Wire also lists additional autosaves and enhanced accessibility features, but its announcement does not enumerate those features.
10. Major expansions and other add-on content are included
The remaster includes the two major story expansions, Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, according to Xbox Wire. Content can vary by platform and edition, so the Switch 2 announcement is a useful example of why it is worth checking the specific release:

What the remaster does not change
Bethesda says the project began in 2021 and was intended to modernize the 2006 game rather than remake it. Its stated goal was to keep the original’s core and preserve the feel of a game from an earlier era. That distinction matters: the updated presentation and selected systems are substantial, but the remaster is still Oblivion at its heart. Bethesda’s launch message describes that intent.
