In a November 3, 2025 list ranked by Metascore, ten games score above Split Fiction, which the article lists at 91. The games range from a dedicated two-player puzzle campaign to multiplayer sandboxes and team modes, so the higher score is a comparison of review aggregates—not a guarantee that a game will suit every co-op group.
What the scores show—and what they do not
The November 3, 2025 article places the ten games below ahead of Split Fiction on its Metascore-based list. Its scores run from 92 to 97. The list is best read as that article’s dated comparison, not a definitive ranking of every co-op game or a claim that each title was designed primarily for co-op. Metascores can vary by platform, and the source’s list does not establish a current score for every specific edition.
Co-op here means players working together toward a shared goal, but the experience differs considerably from game to game. Some entries offer a cooperative campaign or puzzle partnership; others include team modes, social play, or a player-two role alongside a solo player. Check the exact edition and platform for local or online play, player limits, and compatibility before choosing a game.
The 10 games ranked above Split Fiction
| Game | Score in the November 3, 2025 article | Co-op style and likely appeal |
|---|---|---|
| Super Mario Odyssey | 97 | Asymmetric play: one player controls Mario while player two takes the role of Cappy. A fit for a casual partnership where the players have different responsibilities. |
| Halo: Combat Evolved | 97 | Cooperative campaign play, suited to players looking to tackle an action story together. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | 96 | Co-op campaign play in a role-playing game; a natural choice for groups drawn to collaborative RPG adventures. |
| Portal 2 | 95 | A dedicated two-player puzzle partnership, emphasizing communication and coordinated problem-solving. |
| Gears of War | 94 | Campaign co-op for players who want to share an action-focused story. |
| Diablo | 94 | Cooperative or multiplayer play in an action-RPG context; the specific mode and options depend on the game and edition. |
| Rock Band 3 | 93 | Music-game group play, aimed at players who want a social, performance-oriented session. |
| World of Warcraft | 93 | Multiplayer social play in a persistent online role-playing world. |
| Minecraft | 93 | Sandbox collaboration, including shared building and exploration. |
| Team Fortress 2 | 92 | Team-based multiplayer for groups that prefer coordinated matches. |
Scores and the ordering above are attributed to the November 3, 2025 article, which identifies Metascore as its ranking measure. Metacritic search results separately display 97 for Halo: Combat Evolved and 95 for Portal 2, and a GameSpot co-op roundup reports Split Fiction at 91. Those checks do not independently confirm every entry or platform-specific score in the list. Metacritic search results; GameSpot’s 2025 co-op roundup.

Which kind of co-op should you choose?
For two-player puzzles
Portal 2 is the clearest match if the appeal is solving puzzles as a pair. Its cooperative mode is built around partnership rather than simply placing two players in the same action game. The list’s 95 score is the source article’s value; Metacritic search results also show 95, but verify the record for the platform you plan to play on.
For a shared action campaign
Halo: Combat Evolved and Gears of War are the entries explicitly associated with campaign co-op in the source description. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers co-op campaign play for groups more interested in a role-playing adventure. Their higher scores do not tell you which campaign, pace, or play style will fit your group best.

For a social, creative, or team session
Minecraft points toward collaborative building and exploration, while World of Warcraft is framed around multiplayer social play. Rock Band 3 suits a group looking for music-based play, and Team Fortress 2 centers on team matches. These are different kinds of shared play, not interchangeable substitutes for a two-player story campaign.
For an asymmetric or flexible partnership
Super Mario Odyssey gives player two the distinct Cappy role rather than a second Mario. That arrangement may work well when one player wants a lighter supporting part, but it is not the same as two players sharing equal control. The source describes co-op broadly, so check the relevant edition’s details if player roles or local play matter to you.

How to use this ranking
- Use the scores to identify which games the dated article places above Split Fiction, not to decide which one is best for your particular group.
- Choose by format first: a puzzle partnership, shared campaign, RPG, sandbox, music session, or team match will produce a very different co-op experience.
- Before buying or installing, verify the platform, edition, player count, and whether the mode you want supports local or online play. The list does not establish those details consistently for all ten games.
