If you want a cozy game you can finish this weekend, start with Venba: its developer estimated a playthrough at about one to two hours. For a gentle, flexible experience, try A Short Hike or Unpacking—but those are better described as easy to play at your own pace than as guaranteed quick finishes. “Short” can mean a compact story with an ending, or a game that fits into brief sessions without demanding a long campaign.
How to choose a short cozy game
There is no standard runtime for a “cozy game,” and the label is subjective. These picks range from quiet exploration and puzzles to reflective storytelling and comic mischief. Choose based on whether you want a clear ending soon or a low-pressure game you can dip into.

- For a compact story: Look for a defined narrative arc and use a sourced runtime estimate when one is available.
- For short sessions: Look for activities you can pause or stop naturally. That does not mean the whole game is short to beat.
- For a calm mood: Check the tone as well as the length; slapstick pranks and reflective stories may not feel relaxing to everyone.
Nintendo’s 2022 roundup used an eight-hours-or-less threshold for its selection, but that is a ceiling for the roundup, not a measured completion time for every individual game. Its list also includes games that are short without necessarily being cozy.

1. Venba
Venba is a narrative cooking game and the clearest choice here if you want a compact story. A Visai Games developer representative estimated in a July 2023 Steam discussion that it would span “about 1 to 2 hours.” Treat that as an approximate developer estimate, not a guaranteed finish time. Read the developer’s Steam discussion.

- Galaga
2. A Short Hike
This gentle exploration game sends you up a mountain, but the route is yours to choose. Steam’s description emphasizes peaceful scenery, side paths, and taking your time rather than rushing to the summit. Nintendo included it in its 2022 short-game roundup, but the sources cited here do not establish a guaranteed individual completion time. See A Short Hike on Steam.
3. Unpacking
Unpacking turns arranging belongings in new homes into a quiet puzzle, with a story suggested by the objects you place. The game follows eight house moves. PlayStation says there are no timers, meters, or scores, which makes its low-pressure design explicit; that does not mean it has a verified short runtime. See Unpacking on PlayStation.

4. Donut County
This comic, story-based puzzle game centers on a hole that grows as it swallows objects. It suits players who want a light narrative and a playful puzzle loop rather than a quiet nature stroll. Nintendo included it in its short-game roundup and lists a Switch edition, though availability can vary by region. See Donut County on Nintendo Switch.
5. The Gardens Between
In this dreamlike puzzle journey, two friends move through island gardens filled with objects from childhood. Nintendo included it in the eight-hours-or-less roundup. Its reflective atmosphere and environmental puzzles make it a good fit for players who want a contained, story-led experience.

6. Wide Ocean Big Jacket
This conversational camping-trip story features birdwatching, campfire stories, exploration, and four playable characters. It is a natural pick if you want outdoorsy scenes and character moments rather than a large world to manage. Nintendo featured it in its short-game selection.
7. Untitled Goose Game
Untitled Goose Game is a slapstick stealth sandbox about causing trouble as a goose. It is short-list material, but not serene: the appeal is comic disruption and playful objectives. Nintendo included it in its short-game roundup, so consider it cozy only if mischievous humor suits your idea of a relaxing game.

8. Lil Gator Game
This playful exploration adventure is a good candidate if you want a lighthearted world to wander through. A current secondary roundup gives an approximate main-story estimate of about three hours; because that figure is not a developer guarantee, use it as a rough guide rather than a promise. See the secondary cozy-games roundup.

9. Alba: A Wildlife Adventure
Alba is a nature-focused exploration candidate, often recommended to readers looking for wildlife and a quick-ending game. The available evidence here does not establish a reliable runtime or provide an official game description, so it is best chosen for its nature-exploration appeal rather than a specific hour target.

See the secondary cozy-games roundup.

Platforms and runtime expectations
Nintendo’s 2022 roundup presents its featured games for Nintendo Switch and includes several titles above, including A Short Hike, Unpacking, Donut County, The Gardens Between, Wide Ocean Big Jacket, and Untitled Goose Game. That does not establish current availability for every region or edition. Check the store listing for the platform and region you plan to use before buying; prices and catalogs change.
Outside the specific estimate for Venba and the approximate secondary estimates noted above, no comparable primary runtime figures are established here for these games. Player pace, optional exploration, and puzzle-solving can all affect how long a playthrough takes, so an eight-hours-or-less roundup should not be read as a personal completion-time guarantee.
