The Ox disappears after you enter the Lower City, and you can no longer start Help the Devilish Ox. The other stops below are useful opportunities to pick up leads and explore, not a checklist of mandatory quests.
Act Three moves through Rivington, Wyrm’s Crossing and Wyrm’s Rock Fortress before the Lower City. Use the route below to make the most of those areas without treating every side quest as a deadline.
Rivington: pick up local leads
1. Talk to the Strange Ox
Find the Strange Ox in Rivington and speak with it before entering the Lower City if you want to begin Help the Devilish Ox. The Ox disappears once you enter the Lower City, preventing you from starting the quest then. This is the clearest explicitly missable pre-entry conversation among these stops.
2. Explore the Circus of the Last Days
The circus is a landmark and quest hub in Rivington. It is a convenient place to investigate the lead for Find Dribbles the Clown; you do not need to finish that quest before moving on.

3. Investigate the Open Hand Temple
The Open Hand Temple is another Rivington stop, with the Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders quest. Larian’s historical Patch 3 notes document a fix related to this quest, but they are not a complete guide to current timing rules.
4. Check the refugee camp and Requisitioned Barn
Explore the refugee camp and the Requisitioned Barn for conversations and the suspicious-toys quest lead. Larian’s Patch 3 notes also mention fixes to the suspicious-toys quest’s progression. Treat these as worthwhile investigations, not proof that every related step must happen before the Lower City.

5. Visit Gur Camp
Gur Camp is a named Rivington location. Check in with familiar characters and companion-related story threads if they matter to your playthrough. What you find can depend on choices made earlier, so there is no single outcome to expect.
6. Stop at Sword Coast Couriers
The post office can start or advance Find the Missing Letters. It is an easy local lead to pick up while you are already exploring Rivington.

7. Look around Rivington General and the Ironhand gnome hideout
Rivington General and the Ironhand gnomes’ cellar base are both optional exploration stops. Visit if you want to check for interactions or developments connected to the quests you are following.
Wyrm’s Crossing: explore before heading to the fortress
8. Take time to explore Wyrm’s Crossing
Wyrm’s Crossing lies between Rivington and Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, and its shops and establishments are tied to quests. Explore the area rather than treating the bridge as a quick corridor. It is a useful place to notice leads and locations you might otherwise pass on the way through.

Wyrm’s Rock: see the scene and check quest leads
9. Visit the Audience Hall and witness Gortash’s ordination
Your first visit to the Audience Hall triggers Gortash’s ordination scene. Wyrm’s Rock is also the route onward to the Lower City, so this is a natural stop before continuing.
10. Check the prison and companion-related leads
Wyrm’s Rock Prison can advance Free Counsellor Florrick and provides access to the Wyrmway as part of Wyll’s quest. Also consider the High Harper lead: Minsc’s recruitment is available if Jaheira joined you in Act Two. These are opportunities to pursue, not instructions to complete every quest before leaving the fortress.

What to prioritize before entering the Lower City
- Do not miss the Strange Ox conversation if you want to start Help the Devilish Ox; it disappears after you enter the Lower City.
- Use the rest of the route as an exploration checklist. The circus, temple, camp, post office, crossing and fortress all offer useful stops or quest leads, but the available information does not establish that all of them must be completed before entering the city.
- Keep patch notes in context. Larian’s Patch 3 notes record fixes involving several Act Three quests, including the Open Hand Temple murders and suspicious toys. They are historical notes, not a complete or version-specific timing matrix for every quest.
