How to tell whether an FPS really plays on Mac
“Playable on Mac” can mean three different things. Check which route applies before buying, because each has different setup, performance, and availability trade-offs.

- Native macOS: The game has a Mac version. Its store or publisher page should list macOS and provide Mac system requirements.
- Compatibility layer: A Windows game is run through software such as CrossOver or Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit. Compatibility can vary by game, Mac hardware, software version, and anti-cheat system; it is not native support.
- Cloud streaming: A remote Windows PC runs the game and streams the video to your Mac. You need a supported service, a reliable internet connection, and access to the game through that service’s current catalog.
Steam says its store pages identify supported operating systems and system requirements, and its searches can be filtered for macOS-compatible titles. Check the individual listing before purchase; a game appearing in a Mac gaming roundup does not establish that it has a native Mac version. Steam: finding games that support your operating system.
Mac FPS games with documented native requirements
1. Metro Exodus — native macOS version
Metro Exodus is the clearest fit here for a story-focused FPS. Steam describes it as a story-driven first-person shooter combining combat, stealth, exploration, and survival horror. The game’s Steam listing provides Mac-specific minimum and recommended requirements, so readers can compare them with their own Mac rather than infer compatibility from Windows specifications.

2. Borderlands 3 — native macOS version
Borderlands 3 is the looter-shooter choice among the two games here with official Mac requirements. Its publisher support page lists a Mac minimum but does not give a recommended Mac configuration. The requirements below are from the page last updated May 29, 2026.

Helldivers 2 is third-person
Helldivers 2 is a third-person shooter, not an FPS, so it does not belong in a list of first-person games. If you are open to third-person co-op shooters, investigate it separately and verify the current Mac route and service availability.

Counter-Strike 2 needs an OS check
Steam identifies Counter-Strike 2 as a multiplayer, free-to-play game and names Valve as developer and publisher, but that page does not establish macOS availability. A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Open the game’s current store or publisher page and check whether macOS is explicitly listed under supported operating systems.
- If it is native, compare the Mac-specific minimum requirements with your Mac’s chip, graphics, memory, storage, and macOS version.
- If it is Windows-only, identify the exact compatibility layer or cloud service you would use. For cloud play, confirm that the game is currently in the service’s catalog and check its access and account terms.
- For multiplayer games, look for current information about anti-cheat support on the route you intend to use; compatibility with the game itself does not guarantee online play.
- Recheck before purchase or installation. Store listings, publisher requirements, compatibility, and cloud catalogs can change.
