10 Hardest FPS Games Ever Made, Ranked

These FPS games test different kinds of difficulty: full-run failure penalties, fast combat, mechanical mastery, precision time trials, and survival scarcity.

There is no objective all-time ranking of the hardest first-person shooters: one game may punish a single mistake with a full restart, while another demands constant movement, precision, or careful resource use. This list ranks ten FPS games by the toughest supported way to play each one, and labels whether that challenge comes from the regular campaign, a selectable difficulty, an optional mode, or mastery-oriented play.

How this ranking defines “hardest”

The ranking weighs five kinds of pressure: how much progress a failure erases; how quickly and precisely the player must react; how tightly resources constrain survival; how many systems must be learned and used together; and whether the player can adjust the difficulty. The order is an editorial judgment, not a measured comparison: no established cross-game statistic or universally accepted list proves which FPS is hardest.

“Hardest FPS campaign” and “hardest game on the highest difficulty” can mean different things. A punishing optional mode may make a game harder than its default campaign, while a retry-friendly time trial can demand exceptional execution without making every mistake costly.

The 10 hardest FPS games

1. Doom (2016) — Ultra-Nightmare’s one-life stakes

Where the challenge comes from: Optional Ultra-Nightmare mode. Main pressure: failure cost.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black/Red
  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

Ultra-Nightmare pairs Nightmare difficulty with permadeath: one death sends the player back to the beginning of the run. That makes it the clearest example on this list of difficulty driven by the scope of a restart, not just tougher combat. GameSpot reported in April 2016 that id Software executive producer Marty Stratton and creative director Hugo Martin described the mode this way; the article also said that no one at id Software had beaten it at that time. That was a report about 2016, not a current record or proof of the mode’s present completion status. GameSpot’s 2016 report on Ultra-Nightmare.

2. Doom Eternal — Nightmare combat at full speed

Where the challenge comes from: Selectable top difficulty, with campaign difficulty adjustable. Main pressure: reaction speed and mastery of interlocking combat systems.

On Nightmare, enemies hit harder and fire more shots, and the combat unfolds faster. In a January 2020 interview, creative director Hugo Martin described the goal as preserving the same basic experience across difficulty settings while increasing its intensity. The game’s difficulty options and extra lives also mean that this challenge is not unavoidable in every campaign run; GameSpot reported five difficulty options and noted that exploration can reward extra lives. Hugo Martin’s interview on Doom Eternal’s combat and difficulty; GameSpot on Doom Eternal as a “fantasy combat puzzle”.

Martin framed the challenge as something players can master: “We’re not making a hard game. We’re just making a game that’s going to give you something to master, and frustration is a part of mastery.” Game Developer’s interview with Hugo Martin.

3. ULTRAKILL — Speed, switching, and style

Where the challenge comes from: Mechanical mastery. Main pressure: movement, weapon choice, counters, and execution.

ULTRAKILL asks players to stay in motion, switch weapons, counter enemy resistances, and sustain a high style rank. Its difficulty is less about a single failure wiping out a long run than about performing several demanding actions in a fluid sequence. PC Gamer’s overview describes those linked demands, supporting its place here as a mechanically intense shooter rather than establishing that it is objectively harder than the others. PC Gamer’s FPS overview.

4. Warstride Challenges — Precision under the clock

Where the challenge comes from: Time-trial levels and their difficulty variants. Main pressure: execution, replay, and shaving time from a run.

Warstride Challenges makes the run itself the test: levels are short enough to retry, while leaderboards and increasingly demanding variants encourage players to refine movement and aim. Designer Romain Cabanas called it “Easy to learn (accessible to all FPS players) but hard to master (even the best speedrunners will enjoy the game from level 1, wanting their runs to reach perfection).” In the interview-era description, Cabanas said the game had 180 levels divided among normal, hard, very hard, hardcore, and nightmare variants. That is an attributed historical figure, not a confirmed current level total. Unreal Engine’s interview with Warstride Challenges designer Romain Cabanas.

5. Metro Exodus — Survival through scarcity

Where the challenge comes from: Survival pressure. Main pressure: scarce ammunition, lethal weapons, and upkeep.

Metro Exodus belongs on a difficulty list for a different reason from the fast, execution-heavy games above. PC Gamer describes its guns as highly lethal and ammunition as scarce, making careful use of supplies and weapon maintenance central to survival. The evidence supports scarcity and lethality as sources of pressure; it does not establish a universal difficulty rank for the game. PC Gamer’s FPS overview.

6. Doom (2016), played on Nightmare — Relentless combat without permadeath

Where the challenge comes from: Selectable Nightmare difficulty. Main pressure: demanding combat without Ultra-Nightmare’s full-run reset.

Ultra-Nightmare is the standout for failure cost, but the ordinary Nightmare setting is a separate challenge: it tests combat under the game’s toughest standard difficulty without adding the documented permadeath rule. Keeping the two experiences distinct matters. A player looking for the hardest campaign setting may be interested in Nightmare; someone looking for the harshest consequence should look to Ultra-Nightmare.

7. Doom Eternal, played on Nightmare — A faster version of the combat loop

Where the challenge comes from: Selectable Nightmare difficulty. Main pressure: faster, more punishing combat that rewards mastery.

Nightmare is not a separate game mode, but it sharpens the demands of Doom Eternal’s combat. Martin said the experience at higher difficulty happens faster, with enemies hitting harder and throwing more shots. That makes it a strong choice for players who want to master the combat loop, while the available settings and extra lives leave room to choose a less punishing campaign experience. Hugo Martin’s interview on Doom Eternal’s combat and difficulty; GameSpot’s interview on difficulty options and extra lives.

8. ULTRAKILL, played for style and consistency — A self-imposed execution test

Where the challenge comes from: Sustained high-performance play. Main pressure: maintaining movement, weapon variety, counters, and style together.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black

ULTRAKILL’s challenge scales with the player’s ambition: clearing a fight and performing it with speed, control, and a high style rank are not the same task. The game rewards keeping its mechanics in concert, so players seeking mastery can turn encounters into an execution test. PC Gamer’s description supports these mechanical demands, but not a claim that every player must meet a particular style threshold to finish the game. PC Gamer’s FPS overview.

9. Warstride Challenges, on its harder variants — Repetition as the difficulty curve

Where the challenge comes from: Hard, very hard, hardcore, and nightmare variants in the interview-era account. Main pressure: precision and repeatability.

Unlike a campaign where a mistake may cost substantial progress, Warstride’s retry-oriented levels invite repeated attempts to improve a run. The difficulty lies in making the execution both fast and repeatable, not in a documented permadeath system. Cabanas’s interview-era breakdown names the variants and describes leaderboards; it does not establish that the same level count or structure remains current. Unreal Engine’s Warstride Challenges interview.

10. Metro Exodus, played as a survival challenge — Every round matters

Where the challenge comes from: Survival-oriented resource pressure. Main pressure: making scarce ammunition last while managing weapons.

Metro Exodus rounds out the list because scarcity changes how players approach encounters: when ammunition is limited and guns are lethal, waste and neglect have consequences. It represents survival difficulty rather than the restart penalty of Ultra-Nightmare or the precision demands of Warstride. PC Gamer’s overview supports this characterization, but does not supply a comparative score against the other games here. PC Gamer’s FPS overview.
