The reported story sequence runs from Zach at Rank Z through Grisham at Rank B, followed by a starter-dependent rival battle at Rank A. You do not fight a separate story promotion opponent at every letter rank: after Vinnie at Rank V, the story advances directly to Rank F.
How promotion matches and Challenger’s Tickets work
You start at Rank Z and raise your Royale rank by winning battles, but a promotion requires a separate promotion match. First, earn enough Ticket Points by defeating trainers in a Battle Zone at night. Bonus cards in the zone award extra points when you meet their conditions; Nintendo describes winning trainer battles while fulfilling bonus-card conditions as the fastest way to earn a ticket. Once you have a Challenger’s Ticket, take on the promotion match.

The Pokémon Company’s official gameplay explanation describes the ranks as running from Z to A and emphasizes that promotion matches are required to climb. The story walkthrough below reports a jump from Vinnie’s Rank V match straight to Rank F, rather than a distinct story opponent at each letter.
Prepare for real-time battles
These fights are not turn-based: your Pokémon’s position, move range, area of effect, attack timing, and move execution time all affect the result. Use the daytime to catch Pokémon, train your team, and buy items, then head to Battle Zones at night to earn Ticket Points and challenge trainers. See the official real-time battle guidance for the game’s combat overview.

For each promotion match, use the reported lineup and level range as a planning guide, not as an official roster: Nintendo Life’s guide, published 27 October 2025, is the source for the teams, levels, rewards, and matchup suggestions below. The official materials establish the Royale and its mechanics but do not publish a complete opponent roster. Match details and advice here are attributed accordingly.
Story promotion opponents, teams, and reported counters
| Rank and opponent | Reported team and levels | Preparation and result |
|---|---|---|
| Z — Zach | Slowpoke (8), Pidgey (9), Pikachu (9) | Consider Bug against Slowpoke, Electric against Pidgey, and Ground against Pikachu. |
| Y — Yvon | Spritzee (15), Swirlix (15), Vivillon (15) | Steel or Poison attacks can pressure the Fairy types; Rock attacks or other suitable counters can help against Vivillon. |
| X — Xavi | Venipede (20), Roselia (20), Kadabra (20), Furfrou (21) | Fire, Flying, or Psychic attacks are suggested against Venipede and Roselia; Dark or Bug against Kadabra; Fighting against Furfrou. |
| W — Rintaro | Simisage (24), Simipour (24), Simisear (24) | Bring coverage for all three types: Fire or Flying attacks for Simisage, Grass or Electric for Simipour, and Water, Ground, or Rock for Simisear. |
| V — Vinnie | Houndoom (30), Buneary (30), Sharpedo (30), Mega Drampa (32) | The guide notes a shared Fighting weakness across much of the team. Prepare for Mega Drampa’s stat increase. Victory awards the Safeguard TM and advances the story to Rank F. |
| F — Canari | Heliolisk (37), Ampharos (38), Stunfisk (38), Mega Eelektross (39) | Ground attacks are useful, but watch for coverage moves; the guide suggests a durable Ground type such as Excadrill. Victory advances to Rank E and awards Volt Switch. |
| E — Ivor | Heracross (45), Medicham (46), Machamp (46), Mega Falinks (47) | The Fighting-focused team is vulnerable to Flying attacks; Ghost attacks can also help against Medicham. Victory advances to Rank D and awards Bulk Up. |
| D — Corbeau | Arbok (50), Gyarados (51), Roserade (51), Mega Scolipede (52) | Use Electric attacks against Gyarados and Psychic attacks against much of the Poison-heavy team. The official Pokémon announcement independently identifies Corbeau as a promotion opponent who specializes in Poison types. Victory advances to Rank C and awards Gunk Shot. |
| C — Jacinthe | Carbink (57), Mawile (58), Aurorus (58), Gardevoir (58), Mega Clefairy (59) | Steel attacks cover much of the team; account for secondary types among the other opponents. Victory advances to Rank B and awards Play Rough. |
| B — Grisham | Pangoro (61), Malamar (61), Pyroar (61), Tyranitar (62), Salamence (62), Mega Charizard X (63) | The guide highlights Fairy and Fighting coverage against multiple team members. Victory advances to Rank A and awards Flare Blitz. |
| A — Urbain or Taunie | Meowstic (62), Goodra (62), a starter-counter starter (63), Manectric (63), Avalugg (62), and a Mega starter-counter ace (64) | The rival depends on your chosen starter. Build broad type coverage for the six-Pokémon team; the guide also suggests status or area attacks. |
What changes in the Rank A rival match
The Rank A opponent is Urbain or Taunie, depending on the story, and the rival’s lineup varies with the starter you chose. Nintendo Life’s guide reports that the rival’s Mega-evolved ace is Mega Emboar if you chose Chikorita, Mega Feraligatr if you chose Tepig, and Mega Meganium if you chose Totodile. It also reports that the rival uses the other starter with a type disadvantage against yours. Because the final team has six Pokémon and includes the Mega ace, prepare for more than one type matchup rather than building around a single counter.
Rank #2
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
How to use the team and level information
- Check your team’s level against the reported range. The story opponents progress from levels 8–9 for Zach to a level 64 Mega ace in the Rank A rival match. These are Nintendo Life guide figures, not an official Pokémon roster listing.
- Bring several useful attack types. Later teams mix types, and a single weakness may not cover an opponent’s full roster. In real-time combat, reach and area of effect can matter as much as type advantage.
- Plan for Mega Evolution where listed. The guide reports Mega Pokémon for Vinnie, Canari, Ivor, Corbeau, Jacinthe, Grisham, and the Rank A rival.
- Use the daytime gap deliberately. Catch or train Pokémon and stock up on items before returning to nighttime Battle Zones for tickets and battles.
The complete opponent sequence, teams, levels, and rewards in this guide are reported by Nintendo Life’s promotion match walkthrough, published 27 October 2025. The Pokémon Company’s official gameplay page and Nintendo’s 28 March 2025 announcement explain the Royale, tickets, promotion matches, and preparation, but do not give the full story roster.
