Three games have well-supported reasons to appeal to players who enjoy that loop: Dragon Quest XI S, Octopath Traveler, and Bravely Default II. The available evidence does not support a defensible ten-game ranking, so this guide focuses on those three rather than filling out the list with unverified picks. “Fun” is a matter of fit, not a measured consensus.
What makes grinding enjoyable in a JRPG?
Grinding means repeating encounters to gain levels, resources, or other progress. Sony’s genre overview describes character progression or leveling as a typical JRPG trait, but repetition alone does not make it enjoyable. A stronger loop gives the player a reason to care about the next fight: a build to test, a weakness to exploit, or a way to make battles move faster. The three games below offer different versions of that payoff.

JRPGs with a rewarding progression loop
1. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition
Dragon Quest XI S is the best fit here for players who want a traditional turn-based adventure with room to tailor the experience. Square Enix highlights side quests, broad character-build customization, challenge settings, and an ultra-fast battle option. Those tools can make optional encounters more flexible: players can pursue extra fights for character development and use faster battles to reduce downtime. Whether that makes the grind enjoyable depends on the player.
PlayStation describes Dragon Quest XI as a particularly clear example of the traditional JRPG formula and points to the size and variety of its world. Together, those features make it a natural choice for players who enjoy steady character growth while exploring. Square Enix’s game overview and PlayStation’s JRPG guide describe the relevant features.

- Bold New Abilities and Weapons; As an Earth Dancer, use the power of dance, sacred treasures, and fresh weapons to undo Blight's damage
- It Takes a Village; Mind the farm, rebuild entire villages, and revive the gods
- Your Fantasy Japanese Life; Experience Japanese-inspired character designs from festivals and events to monsters
- Romance and Relationships; Choose male & female protagonists, then befriend or romance the eligible candidates
- Recruit these new friends to aid you in battle, too
2. Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler suits players who want repeated encounters to reward tactical learning as well as character growth. Square Enix describes its turn-based combat as accessible but deep, with battles centered on identifying and targeting enemy weaknesses. That gives players a concrete reason to refine their approach: a fight can become more satisfying as they learn which tactics work.
The game also includes side quests and story scenarios that can be approached in multiple ways. These options give players more choice in how they spend time between main-story objectives, though the available descriptions do not establish how much grinding is required. See Square Enix’s overview of Octopath Traveler for its combat and content features.

3. Bravely Default II
Bravely Default II is the clearest pick for players who enjoy experimenting with party roles. Its command-based combat revolves around Brave and Default, while its job system lets characters change roles and gain varied powers. Repeated battles can therefore serve a practical purpose for players who want to explore how different jobs and abilities work together.
That system-driven appeal is not the same as proof that every player will enjoy grinding. The official product page lists the game for Nintendo Switch and Steam; check the listing for your region and preferred format. Square Enix’s Bravely Default II page covers its combat, jobs, and platforms.
Rank #3
- Fly Around Areas Freely - characters can freely move in 360 degrees roaming the skies; Whether flying to explore rockfaces and roofs of buildings, or leaping off cliffs to enter battles, there’s more freedom in terms of adventuring and battling
- Fastest and Strongest Action in the Series - Characters can subdue large numbers of enemies with high-speed movement attacks, special abilities where you can vanish for a moment right in front of your enemy, and a skill which could kill in one hit
How to choose between these three
| Game | Best fit | Documented payoff | Convenience or flexibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Quest XI S | Players who want a traditional turn-based RPG | Character-build customization and optional side quests | Challenge settings and an ultra-fast battle option |
| Octopath Traveler | Players who like improving their tactics | Finding and targeting enemy weaknesses | Side quests and story scenarios with multiple approaches |
| Bravely Default II | Players who like trying different party roles | Job changes that provide varied powers | Listed for Nintendo Switch and Steam; other convenience options are not stated on the cited page |
These are feature comparisons, not a universal ranking of which game has the most enjoyable grind. Choose based on the payoff you want from an extra encounter: faster, customizable battles; more effective weakness targeting; or a chance to explore different jobs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a ten-game ranking
A ten-game list would imply comparable evidence about each title’s progression and battle loop. The available official descriptions do not establish that for enough games to make such a ranking reliable. PlayStation’s guide describes Persona 5 Royal as combining dungeon crawling, monster management, and daytime social commitments, and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance as adding story content, locations, demons, and choices. Those facts alone do not show why either game’s grinding is especially enjoyable.

Community discussions mention titles such as Disgaea, Final Fantasy V, Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, and Dragon Quest III in conversations about grind-heavy games. Individual comments are anecdotal, not evidence of broad agreement or a substitute for comparing each game’s progression systems. For a recommendation, the important question is not simply whether a game involves grinding, but what the repeated encounters let you do.
