What is the best horse in RDR2? For a story-mode all-rounder, Buell is a defensible pick; for an earlier wild horse, consider the White Arabian. But there is no universally agreed winner: Arabian, Turkoman, and Missouri Fox Trotter are all strong candidates, and the best choice depends on the stats, temperament, story timing, and acquisition route you value most.
This ranking follows Game Truth’s 2024 story-mode order, not an official Rockstar ranking. Some horse locations and stable unlocks are story spoilers, so the availability notes below reveal chapter progression.

How this ranking compares horses
The order below uses Game Truth’s February 14, 2024 story-mode list as its backbone. Its ranking considers speed, acceleration, health, stamina, and temperament. It is an editorial ranking, not an objective game result: GameSpot likewise says the choice comes down to preference and highlights the Arabian, Turkoman, and Missouri Fox Trotter as strong all-round breeds.
Stats alone do not settle the question. Handling, the horse’s size and feel, how it behaves under threat, coat-specific availability, and when you can obtain it all matter. The base speed and acceleration figures cited below come from an IGN guide accessed through a mirror, so treat them as secondary guide values rather than an official complete comparison.

The 10 best horses in RDR2
1. Buell
Game Truth ranks Buell first, making him the list’s story-mode all-around choice. That placement is not evidence that Buell leads every individual stat; it reflects the guide’s overall judgment across several factors.
2. White Arabian
The White Arabian is an appealing wild option, and GameSpot says the White-Maned Arabian can be found around Lake Isabella relatively early. It can be difficult to approach and tame, so a wild acquisition may take persistence rather than a simple trip to a stable.
3. Rose Grey Bay Arabian
Game Truth lists the Rose Grey Bay as its own entry. Do not treat it as interchangeable with the White Arabian: coat variants can have distinct stats or acquisition routes, and the cited material does not establish this coat’s full availability details.

4. Black Arabian
The Black Arabian is another coat-specific entry in Game Truth’s ranking. Its position does not mean every Arabian coat shares the same location, timing, or stats.

- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
5. Missouri Fox Trotter
GameSpot includes the Missouri Fox Trotter among the strongest well-rounded breeds. The IGN guide lists base speed 7 and acceleration 5. It gives a Scarlett Meadows stable option in Chapter 4 and a Blackwater option in Epilogue 1.
6. Mustang
The Mustang ranks sixth in Game Truth’s list. The cited passages do not establish a comparable stat or location profile for it, so this entry is best understood as its place in that guide’s overall story-mode ranking.
7. Nokota
The IGN guide lists the Nokota at base speed 7 and acceleration 5. It names the Saint Denis Stable in Chapter 4 as an option, along with a wild acquisition route; the cited material does not provide further detail on that route.

GameSpot describes the Turkoman as a strong all-round horse, with good speed and health, average handling, and comparatively weaker acceleration. The IGN guide gives it base speed 6 and acceleration 5, and lists stable options tied to Chapter 4 and the epilogue.
Rank #3

9. Thoroughbred
The Brindle Thoroughbred is the coat specified in the IGN guide, with base speed 7 and acceleration 5. The guide lists a Strawberry Stable option in Chapter 3 and a wild route. These details refer to that coat and should not be generalized to every Thoroughbred.
10. Hungarian Halfbred
Game Truth places the Hungarian Halfbred tenth and characterizes it as less focused on speed and acceleration but stronger in health and stamina than the speed-oriented candidates. That makes it a durability-minded alternative in the guide’s framing; its temperament descriptions should not be read as a guarantee of how any individual horse will behave.
What the horse stats tell you—and what they do not
The IGN guide’s reported base speed and acceleration values offer a useful narrow comparison, but they do not show every factor that affects an overall choice.

|---|---|---|
| Missouri Fox Trotter | 7 | 5 |
| Nokota | 7 | 5 |
| Brindle Thoroughbred | 7 | 5 |
| Arabian | 6 | 6 |
| Turkoman | 6 | 5 |
These are guide-reported base values, not a complete head-to-head verdict. Health, stamina, handling, coat, access timing, and individual preference remain part of the decision. GameSpot’s wider takeaway is that Arabians, Turkoman, and Missouri Fox Trotters are particularly strong all-round candidates—not that one breed wins for every player.

When you can get notable horses
The story-mode timing matters: several stable options are chapter- or epilogue-gated. The following locations are those reported by the cited guides; availability details are not a complete list of every coat or route.
- White-Maned Arabian: wild around Lake Isabella, available relatively early according to GameSpot; taming it can be difficult.
- Brindle Thoroughbred: Strawberry Stable in Chapter 3, or a wild route, according to the IGN guide.
- Missouri Fox Trotter: Scarlett Meadows Stable in Chapter 4 and Blackwater in Epilogue 1, according to the IGN guide.
- Nokota: Saint Denis Stable in Chapter 4, or a wild route, according to the IGN guide.
- Turkoman and Arabian variants: the IGN guide lists later stable options tied to Chapter 4 and the epilogue; the cited passages do not establish a complete coat-by-coat location list.
Care affects condition, but no numerical bonus is established here
GameMapa’s summary of Rockstar’s Wildlife information reports 19 horse breeds and 59 coat styles, and identifies buying from a stable and taming a wild horse as acquisition methods. It describes a groomed, well-fed horse as less skittish, with improved stamina and handling, but supplies no numerical bonus or bonding threshold. The same summary does not provide a complete official stat table or location list.
That makes care relevant whichever horse you choose, but it does not support a precise claim about how many stat points a particular grooming or feeding action adds.
