This is a role-based shortlist instead, built around the game’s documented weapon variety, customization, tactical target selection, and named additions. Use it to think about what a loadout should do—not as a claim that the first weapon listed is objectively strongest.
The game supports solo play and co-op squads of up to six, so weapon choices need to work both for covering a team’s gaps and for handling threats without backup. Tripwire’s official materials confirm the arsenal includes katanas and shotguns, but do not establish a complete, current ten-weapon ranking. The entries below are therefore weapon types and roles, not a verified current catalog of ten named guns.

How to read this shortlist
These ten picks are organized by the job they can serve in a loadout, not by measured performance. The sources establish a close-quarters role for the M-97 Trench Gun and describe weapon mods, ammunition choices, and Critical Zone tactics; they do not establish equal data for every weapon named below. Treat each entry as a role to look for in your own available arsenal, and confirm the weapon and its current behavior in-game.
Tripwire’s design directors describe customization as a way to tune weapons without erasing their identity: a shotgun can be adapted, but it does not become a sniper rifle. They cite sights, grips, and alternate ammunition such as fire or freeze damage. That means the best choice can depend on the wave’s vulnerabilities and your perk’s needs, not just the weapon’s base category.

10 weapon roles worth considering
1. M-97 Trench Gun — close-quarters pressure
Tripwire describes the M-97 Trench Gun as a Firebug weapon built for close quarters. It has slam-fire, so holding fire feeds and shoots shells in succession, and it loads incendiary shotgun rounds by default. That makes it the clearest source-backed pick here for a player who wants a shotgun role with fire damage. The description is from the publisher, not an independent performance test.
2. A katana — melee commitment
Katanas are explicitly named in the official PlayStation listing, making them a fitting option for a loadout built around melee engagement. The sources do not provide a named katana model, its current stats, or a measured comparison with ranged weapons, so choose it for the role you want rather than an assumed damage advantage.
3. A standard shotgun — immediate close-range damage
Shotguns are part of the officially listed arsenal. Their role is easy to understand: they suit encounters where you are willing to fight at close range. The M-97 is the only shotgun for which the supplied official material provides specific mechanics, so do not assume every shotgun shares its slam-fire or incendiary ammunition.
4. A flamethrower — fire-focused coverage
Flamethrowers are also named in the official listing. They offer a distinct weapon identity from the Trench Gun’s shell-based fire damage, which can make the category worth considering when you want a fire-focused role. The available sources do not establish comparative damage, range, or ammunition behavior for a particular flamethrower.

Tripwire’s interview describes fire ammunition as one example of a modded damage type. If a wave is susceptible to fire, ammunition choice can help adapt a weapon to it. This is a configuration strategy, not a claim that fire is always the best damage type; the weapon’s original role still matters.

- Haunting Atmosphere - Experience a fusion of psychological, gothic, and British horror.

- Story-Driven Horror - Explore a narrative inspired by true Welsh folklore and the terrifying legend of Elisabeth Williams.
6. A weapon configured with freeze ammunition — alternative wave response
Freeze ammunition is another mod example given by the developers. It provides a way to alter how a weapon addresses a wave without pretending the gun has become a different class of weapon. Check which weapon supports the mod and how it behaves in your current build; the sources do not list exact effects or compatibility.
7. A sight-equipped weapon — deliberate target selection
Tripwire cites sights as a customization option, including for a Sharpshooter play style. Consider this kind of setup when you want to prioritize a particular target or exposed Critical Zone rather than fire indiscriminately. The source does not specify which sight is best or quantify an accuracy benefit.
8. A grip-equipped weapon — tune handling to your style
Grips are another developer-cited mod option. They can be part of shaping a weapon for how you want to use it, but the published interview does not enumerate grip effects or rank them. Compare the options the game actually offers for your weapon instead of assuming a specific stat boost.
9. A role-flexible weapon with alternate ammunition — cover a team gap
Tripwire’s design director says ammunition mods can help when a player’s usual class is not the best fit for a wave’s vulnerability. That makes a weapon with a useful alternate-ammo option valuable as a flexible choice, especially when your squad needs a damage type or approach it otherwise lacks. Flexibility is the point; it is not evidence that one universal setup will outperform a focused build.
10. A weapon you can aim at Critical Zones — tactical interruption
Critical Zones turn target choice into a tactical decision. The developers explain that destroying certain zones can interrupt enemy abilities or set up an execution state. For the Impaler, damaging arm zones can stop rockets, while back zones can stop smoke grenades. Choose a weapon you can reliably direct at the relevant zone in the situation; the sources do not name one best weapon for every zone.

Choose targets, not just weapons
Tripwire Design Director Leland Scali cautions: “Just because that Zed is the closest one to you doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the one you should shoot first.” The practical implication is to watch for armor breaking and exposed Critical Zones, then consider whether disabling a dangerous ability will help more than damaging the nearest enemy. The developer interview describes the potential outcomes as enemy- and zone-dependent, not a guaranteed effect against every Zed.
What the sources establish—and what they do not
- Established: the official PlayStation listing names flamethrowers, shotguns, and katanas, and describes customization through mods, gadgets, and skills.
- Established: developers cite sights, grips, and fire or freeze ammunition as examples of weapon customization, while saying mods should preserve each weapon’s identity.
- Established: the M-97 Trench Gun’s announced role and mechanics include close-quarters use, slam-fire, and default incendiary rounds.
- Not established: a comparable ranking of ten weapons by damage, time-to-kill, accuracy, win rate, or overall strength. The shortlist is a practical role guide, not a test result.
