1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe most memorable PS3 couch co-op games make sharing a console feel different from title to title: some put four players on one screen, some split the view for a two-person puzzle campaign, and others build their fun around coordinated action. This retrospective selection favors variety of format, distinctive shared-play ideas, and lasting recognition—not a statistically measured or canonical ranking. “Couch co-op” here means local play on one console; online options are noted where the sources document them.
At a glance: local co-op formats
| Game | Local format and player count | Co-op hook |
|---|---|---|
| Diablo III | Same screen; up to four players on PS3 | Action RPG combat and loot-driven play |
| Portal 2 | Split-screen; two players | Puzzles designed around communication and a partner |
| Army of Two: The 40th Day | Split-screen co-op is documented for the PS3 demo; the cited source does not state a player count | Two-person cooperative shooter action |
| Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One | Same-screen co-op; one to four players | Cooperative action-platform adventure |
| LittleBigPlanet 2 | Multiplayer and social creation are documented; the cited source does not establish local player count | Community-made levels and creative play |
The list below treats these as different kinds of shared play, rather than pretending every game offers the same local setup. Local and online co-op are not interchangeable: check the specific mode and player count if your plan is to play together on one PS3.
1. Diablo III
Why it stands out
Diablo III gives a group the straightforward pleasure of fighting through an action RPG together, gathering loot as the screen fills with enemies and effects. PlayStation Blog’s September 3, 2013 launch post confirms that the PS3 release supports local co-op for up to four players on the same screen: Diablo III launches this week on PS3.
Best fit
Choose it when you want a shared-screen session for a group of up to four, rather than a split-screen view. Its action-RPG structure gives players room to team up while pursuing loot and combat progression.

- Made in United States
2. Portal 2
Why it stands out
Portal 2’s co-op campaign is built around two people solving problems together, not simply playing the single-player game side by side. Valve’s Joshua Weier described its puzzles as requiring a second player and a second brain; the PlayStation Blog interview also confirms PS3 local split-screen as an option: Portal 2 PS3 Q&A.
Best fit
Pick this for two players who enjoy communicating, planning, and experimenting. The split-screen format is especially useful when each player needs to follow a different part of a puzzle.

3. Army of Two: The 40th Day
Why it stands out
This entry brings a two-person shooter sensibility to couch co-op. A PlayStation Blog post from December 2009 says players could experience cooperative action with a friend online or via split screen in the PS3 demo: Army of Two: The 40th Day.
Best fit
It suits players looking for a shooter experience shaped around cooperation rather than a puzzle campaign or a four-player action RPG. The cited post confirms split-screen for the demo, but does not establish a precise player-count specification beyond playing with a friend.

5. LittleBigPlanet 2
Why it stands out
LittleBigPlanet 2 is a natural fit for a list about the variety of local multiplayer experiences associated with PS3: its documented emphasis includes multiplayer and social creation, so the shared-play appeal can extend beyond a fixed campaign to player-created levels.
What to verify
The cited press-release evidence establishes multiplayer and social creation, but does not establish the local player count. Confirm the PS3 edition’s local setup before choosing it specifically for a couch co-op session; do not assume that a general multiplayer description guarantees a particular same-console configuration.

- For four people on one shared view: Diablo III documents same-screen local play for up to four. Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One documents same-screen play for one to four.
- For a two-person split-screen session: Portal 2 is documented as two-player local split-screen, with puzzles structured around cooperation. Army of Two: The 40th Day has split-screen co-op documented for its PS3 demo.
- For coordinated problem-solving: Portal 2 makes communication central to its co-op design.
- For action-platforming: Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One offers a cooperative adventure on one screen.
- For creative, player-made content: LittleBigPlanet 2’s multiplayer and social-creation emphasis is distinctive, but verify local player details for the edition you have.
What “couch co-op” means for these games
Split-screen is only one kind of local co-op. In the documented PS3 examples here, Portal 2 and Army of Two: The 40th Day use split-screen, while Diablo III and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One are described as same-screen experiences. A game can also offer online play, but that does not by itself tell you how many people can join locally. The safest check is the specific PS3 release’s local mode, screen format, and player count.
