Immersion is not a map-size contest. A world can draw you in through small environmental details, stories discovered off the main route, the feel of crossing a landscape, or the freedom to decide who you are in it. These ten games offer different routes into that feeling; they are recommendations, not a measured or definitive ranking.

What makes a video game world immersive?

For this list, an immersive world earns attention in four ways: its setting and atmosphere feel distinct; exploring beyond the obvious route can reveal places or stories; movement and interaction make the player feel present; and the game gives players some agency over how they experience it. No standardized cross-game immersion score establishes a single winner.

That distinction matters: a huge map is not automatically a compelling place to inhabit. Some of these worlds are dense with authored stories; others invite exploration through systems, traversal, or the possibility of the unknown. Choose based on the kind of journey you want.

Ten immersive video game worlds

1. Red Dead Redemption 2 — a lived-in frontier

Best for: grounded atmosphere, environmental detail, and stories encountered along the way.

Red Dead Redemption 2 builds its Wild West around more than its central narrative. Its expansive frontier is filled with small environmental details and unexpected events, giving travel the potential to feel like time spent in a place rather than simply movement between missions. GameSpot describes the setting as expansive and detailed, while PC Gamer highlights its ambient details and random encounters.

It is a strong choice if you want a historical setting with a pronounced sense of daily life. Its appeal is in noticing what happens around the main story as much as in following it. GameSpot’s open-world guide and PC Gamer’s open-world recommendations discuss the game’s setting and world details.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — a fantasy landscape full of stories

Best for: narrative-rich exploration and a world where a detour can become a quest.

Geralt’s travels through the Continent connect a large fantasy landscape to personal stories, contracts, and discoveries. The world’s pull comes not only from its scale but from the sense that places have histories and that roads may lead to more than the next main objective. PC Gamer describes its landscape as rich in stories and quests; PlayStation’s guide presents it as an open-world adventure.

For buyers comparing editions, CD PROJEKT RED’s official page identifies The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition and its two expansions, as well as physical and digital formats. Check the edition and platform on the current store listing before purchasing, since availability can vary. PlayStation’s open-world guide and CD PROJEKT RED’s official game page provide further details.

3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — freedom to make the journey your own

Best for: role-playing freedom and roaming a broad fantasy setting.

  • The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.

Skyrim’s world invites players to choose a role and decide where to go. PC Gamer characterizes it as a large-scale open-world RPG with room to travel and define a character, making its immersion especially suited to players who want to set their own priorities rather than follow a single tightly directed route.

Its strongest appeal here is agency: the fantasy setting gives you room to approach the adventure on your terms. PC Gamer’s recommendations describe its scale and freedom.

4. Elden Ring — a mysterious world that rewards curiosity

Best for: challenging exploration and discovering what lies beyond the obvious path.

The Lands Between is a dangerous fantasy world whose appeal is closely tied to uncertainty. PC Gamer points to its organic exploration and lack of conventional map markers: rather than having every destination spelled out, players are encouraged to look, wander, and decide what seems worth investigating. Bandai Namco identifies Elden Ring as an open-world game.

This approach is a good fit if you enjoy piecing together a place through exploration and accept that the journey can be demanding. Edition details are time-sensitive: Bandai Namco documents an Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition for 2026, so check its official page and your platform’s store for current availability and contents. PC Gamer’s open-world recommendations discuss the exploration style; Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring page provides game and edition information.

5. No Man’s Sky — a galaxy of possible discoveries

  • build the ultimate survival machine - Players design, customize and upgrade their ultimate vehicle-the Magnum Opus-choosing from different car chassis and a slew of upgrades including mounted weapons, armour and engines to survive another day

No Man’s Sky shifts immersion from a single authored frontier to a galaxy-scale journey. Hello Games describes travel between planets, cataloguing life, and choosing whether to share discoveries with other players. The result is an exploration experience built around moving through a vast setting and deciding what to do with what you find.

It suits players who want the act of discovery itself to drive their time in a game, rather than a tightly bounded sequence of story destinations. Hello Games’ official overview explains its exploration and survival premise.

6. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora — seeing Pandora from the ground

Best for: first-person presence in an alien landscape.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora places the player in the role of a Na’vi reconnecting with their birthplace in Pandora’s Western Frontier. Its first-person perspective makes the environment the immediate focus, while the official description frames the region as both beautiful and dangerous.

Choices that affect reputation give the world a social dimension as well as a physical one: how you approach the underworld can shape your experience.

It is a natural fit if you want to explore a recognizable science-fiction universe while moving between different kinds of environments and activities. StarWars.com’s official game page covers its setting and gameplay premise.

8. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — immersion through the crossing

Best for: deliberate traversal, landscapes, and reconnecting isolated communities.

In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the journey across difficult terrain is central to the experience. PlayStation places it among open-world survival games, while PC Gamer highlights the tools and vehicles used to make the crossing. The world’s defining activity is not simply reaching a destination, but working out how to travel through it.

That makes it a distinctive choice for players who find a world compelling when movement itself demands attention. Its premise of reconnecting a broken society gives that traversal a larger purpose. PlayStation’s open-world guide and PC Gamer’s recommendations describe its place among open-world experiences and its traversal tools.

9. Monster Hunter Wilds — an ecosystem to read and hunt

Best for: exploration connected to tracking, hunting, and crafting.

How to pick your next world

  • Start with your preferred pace. A story-rich journey, a deliberately difficult exploration game, and a galaxy-scale sandbox ask for different kinds of attention.
  • Decide how much direction you want. If you like following quests, consider The Witcher 3; if you prefer to choose your own role and route, Skyrim or No Man’s Sky may be more appealing.
  • Think about what you want to do while exploring. Some games foreground traversal, others hunting, combat, side stories, or building. The map matters less if its central activities are not the ones you enjoy.
  • Check the platform and edition before buying. Edition contents and availability can differ by platform and change over time; consult the official game page and the store listing for the version you plan to play.
