A sealed Super Mario Bros. bundle sold for $3,000,000 at Heritage Auctions in June 2026, the highest public auction result in Heritage’s published video-game records as of October 4, 2026. The $2 million Super Mario Bros. sale often cited alongside auction records was a private buyout, not a public auction.
The 10 highest public auction results in Heritage’s published records
This ranking orders individual auction lots, not game titles by typical market value. It follows Heritage Auctions’ published Hall of Fame results as accessed on October 4, 2026; later sales may change the order. Prices and descriptions below are Heritage’s reported results.

Heritage’s Video Games Hall of Fame results list the lot descriptions, prices and dates. Its June 2026 auction summary independently confirms the $3 million result and identifies a $575,000 lot as the sale’s second-highest result.
Why the $3 million sale is a record for one specific lot
The top result was not simply an ordinary sealed copy of a popular game. Heritage describes the lot as a PSA 9.6 A++ sealed copy from the second production run, bearing a gloss sticker and sold with its original NES Control Deck. The auction house says the game was discovered inside a brand-new Control Deck bundle and describes only three sealed copies from that production run as known. Those details belong to the collectible lot; they do not establish a normal price for Super Mario Bros. or for other copies.

Heritage’s announcement of the record sale quotes its Consignment Director for Video Games, Evan Masingill, calling the result a milestone for the hobby. That is the auction house representative’s view; the sale price itself is the verifiable result.
Why multiple copies of the same game rank separately
A collectible-game auction result describes a particular copy and lot, not just a title. The ranking includes several separate Super Mario Bros. copies because their production details, packaging, condition grades and sale dates differ. A sealed first-production copy, for example, is not interchangeable with a later-run copy or a bundle that includes original hardware.
- Sale format: A public auction result can be compared with other published auction results. A private transaction is a different kind of evidence.
- Variant and packaging: Production run, code, hangtab, sticker, box type and included hardware can distinguish copies.
- Condition and grading: The named grader and the specific box and seal marks matter to how a lot is described.
- Provenance and context: Discovery in an original hardware bundle can be part of a lot’s documented history.
- Date and record source: A ranking is only current to the latest sales it includes, and record pages may update later than auction results.
How to read a sealed-game grade
Wata’s numerical box grade and its seal grade are separate parts of a grading description; PSA’s notation appears in the records as well. A high number is not a universal price formula. Heritage’s sealed-video-game grading tutorial explains that packaging types show different kinds of wear, including crushed corners, moisture damage, seal tears or scuffs, and fading from UV exposure. These are condition factors in grading, not a guarantee of what a copy will sell for.
For display or storage, a protective case made for a graded-game slab may help protect it from handling; check the slab’s dimensions before buying. If you own a vintage game and are considering a sale, Heritage describes its video-game services as including auctions and options for sealed, graded vintage games. An auction-house service description is not an independent appraisal of a particular copy.

Does the $2 million Super Mario Bros. sale belong in the ranking?
It is relevant to the broad question “What is the most expensive video game ever sold?” but it is not part of a public-auction ranking. In 2021, a sealed Super Mario Bros. reportedly changed hands for $2 million in a Rally buyout from fractional owners. Engadget’s report describes the transaction as a private sale. It therefore sits below the $3 million auction result in a discussion of reported sales, but should be kept separate from auction records.
Why Guinness may show a different record
Guinness World Records’ entry for “Most expensive videogame sold at an online auction” still names the $1,560,000 Super Mario 64 result from 2021. That page notes that records may change before an entry is updated. The Guinness listing is scoped to its online-auction record and its published entry; Heritage’s later 2026 result is the newer public auction sale in the records cited here. See the Guinness record page for its wording and update caveat.
What this ranking does—and does not—cover
This is a ranking of Heritage’s published auction results, not a complete census of every private transaction worldwide. Undisclosed sales may not appear in public archives, and auction positions can change when new results are published. The prices above are exceptional results for particular collectible lots, not estimates of the value of common, opened or ungraded copies.
