This list is a popularity ranking—not a count of how many distinct people played each game—and its order combines reported sales, ratings and monthly search volume.
What this ranking measures
The order below reproduces Plarium’s “Most Popular Games of All Time” list, updated March 4, 2026. Plarium says it combines copies sold, game ratings and monthly search volume. Those are different measures, so the ranking is a popularity synthesis rather than a reproducible lifetime player-count ranking. The copy figures are the numbers in Plarium’s table; they should not be read as unique players or playtime. See Plarium’s methodology and list.
The 10 games in Plarium’s popularity ranking
Platforms below are those listed by Plarium. The reported copy totals are attributed to its table and are not a common measure of distinct players.
| Rank | Game | Copies reported in Plarium’s table | Platforms listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tetris | 520 million | Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android and iOS |
| 2 | Minecraft | 350 million | Windows, macOS, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation, Android and iOS |
| 3 | Grand Theft Auto 5 | 220 million | Windows, Xbox and PlayStation |
| 4 | Wii Sports | 83 million | Wii |
| 5 | Red Dead Redemption 2 | 77 million | Windows, PlayStation and Xbox |
| 6 | Ark: Survival Evolved | 76 million | Windows, macOS, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android and iOS |
| 7 | PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds | 75 million | Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Android and iOS |
| 8 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | 70 million | Switch |
| 9 | The Oregon Trail | 65 million | Windows, browser and iOS |
| 10 | The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim | 60 million | Windows, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch |
These figures are reported sales, not estimates of the number of people who played. Plarium’s article also gives different figures in its individual game details for Minecraft (300 million) and Grand Theft Auto 5 (210 million) than in its table. The table figures above are therefore identified specifically as table figures, not treated as settled totals. Plarium’s article.

#1 Best Overall
Tetris: the version-counting question
Whether Tetris or Minecraft leads a sales comparison depends partly on what counts as one game. A reference compilation reports 520 million combined-version Tetris sales as of 2022; aggregating many versions is not the same comparison as counting one game product. The compilation’s sales list explains its scope and limitations.
Minecraft: totals vary by source and date
The same compilation reports more than 425 million Minecraft copies as of 2026, a different figure from Plarium’s 350 million table entry. These are reported sales figures with different source dates and scopes, not player counts. The compilation distinguishes a single game product from combined versions such as Tetris.
Grand Theft Auto 5: use the table figure with care
Plarium’s table and its individual game detail do not agree on this title’s reported sales total. That internal discrepancy is why the figure in the ranking should be understood only as the number printed in the table.
Rank #2
Wii Sports: a single-platform entry
Plarium lists Wii as the platform. The ranking mixes titles with different platform footprints, so its order is not a comparison of equally distributed cross-platform player populations.
Red Dead Redemption 2: a sales figure, not a playtime measure
The reported total cannot show how many purchasers played, how long they played, or whether a person who played across platforms is counted once or more than once.
Ark: Survival Evolved: broad platform listing
Plarium lists versions across computer, console, handheld and mobile platforms. A platform list does not establish how its sales are split among versions or how many unique players those sales represent.
Rank #3
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: platform coverage is not a lifetime count
The listed platforms include both computer and console systems as well as mobile. That breadth does not make the reported copies comparable to active accounts, annual playtime or concurrent users.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: platform scope matters
Plarium lists Switch only. A single-platform sales total and a multi-platform total may reflect different distribution scopes; neither is, by itself, a count of distinct people.
The Oregon Trail: browser access is a different kind of reach
Plarium lists Windows, browser and iOS. The table does not specify how its reported copies relate to browser access, nor does it provide a comparable count of players across those routes.
Rank #4
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim: editions and ports complicate comparisons
The listed platforms span several generations and types of system, but the table does not state how editions or ports are aggregated. That missing detail limits direct comparison with titles whose versions may be counted differently.
What “most played” can mean
Several common gaming metrics answer different questions, and a title can lead one without leading the others:
- Copies sold: units sold or reported as sold. Useful as a reach proxy for paid games, but it does not reveal how many distinct people played or how much they played.
- Unique players or accounts: distinct people or accounts over a stated period. These are not interchangeable: one person may have multiple accounts, while shared accounts can obscure the number of people.
- Active users: players who meet a source’s activity definition in a specified period, such as a month. It is a period-specific measure, not a lifetime total.
- Playtime: hours played during a defined period and on a defined set of platforms. This captures engagement, not lifetime unique players.
- Concurrent players: the number playing at the same time, usually reported for a particular platform and moment. It is a live snapshot, not a total audience.
Sales can give a rough indication of reach for paid games, but comparisons get harder when games are free to play, sold in bundles, released in multiple versions, or counted across overlapping platforms. Regional coverage and data collection also vary. The best-selling-games compilation itself notes the limits of sales data and the absence of a comprehensive industry sales tracker. Read its definitions and caveats.

What current playtime data says—and does not say
In its 2026 PC and console report, Newzoo ranked Roblox the most-played franchise by playtime in 2025 across 37 markets, excluding China and India. That finding covers a particular year, a defined set of markets and PC, PlayStation and Xbox; it is a franchise-level result, not a global lifetime ranking of individual games. Newzoo’s 2026 PC & Console Gaming Report.
Valve’s Steam statistics page shows current players and the peak for the day on Steam. Those are time-sensitive concurrent-player counts for Steam only. They do not count lifetime unique players or all platforms. Check Valve’s live Steam statistics.
How to judge any “most-played” ranking
Before comparing two rankings, check that they use the same:
- Metric: sales, unique players, active users, playtime or concurrency.
- Time window: lifetime, calendar year, month or a live moment.
- Geography and platforms: including any excluded markets or systems.
- Unit of comparison: one game, a franchise, or a collection of versions.
- Aggregation rule: whether ports, editions, bundles and sequels are combined.
- Data source: publisher, platform operator or third-party estimate.
Without those definitions, a precise-looking rank can mix unlike evidence. The list above is useful as a published popularity synthesis, but it cannot establish which game has had the most individual players over all time.
