For a Switch RPG that keeps drawing you back, choose the loop you enjoy most: exploring a huge world, catching Pokémon, building a party, mastering tactical combat, or following a strong story. These ten games cover very different kinds of role-playing, and each entry below explains its particular pull and who is most likely to enjoy it. All are for the original Nintendo Switch; check the exact edition and platform label on the current store listing before buying, since newer guides may mix in Switch 2 titles.
How to choose a Switch RPG you’ll keep playing
“RPG” covers more than one style. Some games rely on menu-driven, turn-based battles; others use real-time combat, tactical positioning, exploration, or story choices as their main draw. The recommendations below are not a ranked list: they are options for different tastes, from a sprawling fantasy adventure to a focused creature-catching journey.

Switch portability can make a long adventure easier to pick up in short sessions, whether you continue a quest away from home or settle in for a longer stretch. It is a format advantage, not a promise that every game suits every schedule.
10 Nintendo Switch RPGs worth getting absorbed in
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 — for a huge world and a steady stream of quests
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the pick for players who want a sprawling setting to explore. Its world is built around inhabited Titans, and its appeal comes from moving through that distinctive landscape, taking on quests, and gradually opening up more of the adventure. Combat is real-time rather than a straightforward menu-by-menu turn-based system, so it suits players who like exploration and ongoing party progression alongside battles.

Choose it if you want a large, quest-rich fantasy journey rather than a compact, easily finished-in-a-few-sessions RPG. Nintendo Life lists Nintendo as publisher and Monolith Soft as developer, with a Switch release date of December 1, 2017, in North America and the UK/EU. Nintendo Life’s Switch RPG guide describes its world and quests.
2. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition — for classic turn-based comfort and a strong cast
This is a natural choice if you want a traditional, story-led RPG with turn-based battles. Its draw is the combination of a well-paced narrative, memorable character ensemble, dense overworld, and soundtrack. The familiar structure makes it a more approachable starting point for someone seeking a classic fantasy adventure than a game built around intricate tactical systems.
The Switch version is titled Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. Nintendo Life lists Square Enix as both publisher and developer and gives the Switch release date as September 27, 2019, in North America and the UK/EU. Nintendo Life’s guide highlights its story, characters, overworld, and music.
3. Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition — for tactical fights and consequential choices
Pick Divinity: Original Sin 2 if the most satisfying RPG loop for you is thinking through a fight, experimenting with the environment, and deciding how to approach a problem. This is an isometric, tactical role-playing game, not a fast action adventure. Its combat and player choice give it strong replay and build-experimentation appeal, while also making it a more demanding fit for newcomers than a simpler, linear story RPG.
Nintendo Life identifies Larian Studios as publisher and developer and lists the Switch release date as September 4, 2019, in North America. The Switch edition is called Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition; confirm that platform and edition in the listing you use. Nintendo Life’s overview calls out its player choice and physics-based combat.
4. Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster — for two contrasting adventures in one package
This collection appeals to players who want a substantial story experience and are happy to move between two different RPGs. Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 are separate adventures rather than one continuous game with a single play style, so the draw is both the variety and the opportunity to stay in the same broad world across two campaigns. It is a story-first option for players who enjoy character drama and turn-based role-playing.
Nintendo Life lists the Switch release date for Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster as April 16, 2019, in North America and the UK/EU. Check whether a listing is for the combined package and the Switch version rather than another platform’s release. Nintendo Life’s guide describes it as two RPGs in one package.

5. Pokémon Legends: Arceus — for exploration and catching over gym challenges
Pokémon Legends: Arceus changes the emphasis from a familiar gym-focused journey to exploring areas and catching Pokémon. That makes it a strong match for players who enjoy filling out a collection and learning a world through field exploration more than battling a succession of gyms. Its loop is distinct from a conventional menu-heavy party RPG, and Nintendo Life notes technical stumbles, worth bearing in mind if smooth presentation is a priority.

6. Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition — for a classic isometric party adventure
Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition suits players curious about the roots of computer-style fantasy RPGs: an isometric view, a party of adventurers, and a journey shaped by exploration and character development. Its older design is part of the appeal for genre history fans, but it can feel less accessible than newer games. If you want modern onboarding and frictionless systems, start with one of the more recent recommendations instead.
Nintendo Life includes it among Switch RPG options and warns that the classic entries show their age and may be less accessible. Check the current Nintendo Switch store listing for the edition name and platform before purchase. Nintendo Life’s guide covers both enhanced editions.
7. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition — for a longer return to the same classic style
If the first game’s party-based, isometric approach clicks with you, Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition offers another classic adventure in that tradition. It belongs on this list for the same reasons as its predecessor—party development, exploration, and old-school role-playing structure—but the age-related accessibility caveat applies here as well. It is best for players willing to meet a classic on its own terms rather than expecting contemporary conveniences.

8. South Park: The Fractured but Whole — for comic writing and turn-based tactics
South Park: The Fractured but Whole offers a very different tone from epic fantasy: its appeal is irreverent humor wrapped around a role-playing adventure. The combat is tactical and turn-based, giving players positioning and party decisions to think through rather than relying on real-time action. It is a better fit for readers who want comedy and a distinctive setting than for someone seeking a serious fantasy narrative.

9. Final Fantasy VII — for a compact entry into a landmark fantasy story
The original Final Fantasy VII is an option for players who want a landmark story-driven RPG with party building and turn-based combat, rather than a massive modern open world. Its older presentation and systems are part of its identity, so it is most appealing if you are comfortable with classic design or want to see an earlier style of console role-playing. It also works well for dipping into a substantial adventure in portable sessions.
Gaming.net includes Final Fantasy VII in its Nintendo Switch RPG selection. Confirm the specific Switch release in the listing; several games share the name, and the original Switch version is not the same product as later remakes. 10. NEO: The World Ends with You — for action combat and a modern urban setting
NEO: The World Ends with You is the action-led choice here. Rather than relying on conventional turn-based menus, it centers on real-time combat and a contemporary urban setting, making it a useful contrast to the fantasy journeys elsewhere on the list. Choose it if you want a stylish, character-focused RPG whose energy comes from fighting and story progression rather than methodical tactical planning.
Gaming.net names it among Nintendo Switch RPG options. Check that the purchase listing is for the original Nintendo Switch edition. Gaming.net’s 2026 list includes the title.

Check the platform and edition before buying
Some current RPG guides cover both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, while others are limited to the original Switch. GamesRadar+’s Switch 2 guide identifies platform entry by entry, so its recommendations should not be assumed to run on the original console. For this list, check that the product page specifically names Nintendo Switch and that the edition matches the game discussed—particularly for remasters, enhanced editions, and collections. GamesRadar+’s Switch 2 RPG guide illustrates why the platform label matters.
