The game launched in Steam Early Access on March 5, 2026, and its content and balance are still changing. These ten pitfalls focus on durable decision-making; exact card, relic, and encounter advice can become outdated.
Slay the Spire 2 is a roguelike deckbuilder: you build a deck and adapt your choices as each climb unfolds. It supports solo runs and online co-op. Mega Crit says the sequel has new and returning characters, as well as new cards, relics, potions, enemies, events, and mechanics. You do not need experience with the first game to start playing.
10 mistakes to avoid in Slay the Spire 2
1. Assuming Slay the Spire 1 habits always apply
Some experience may help you recognize familiar ideas, but the sequel adds content and mechanics, and its balance can change. Don’t pick a card or plan a turn just because a similar choice worked in the first game. Read the current card text and rules, then decide what they mean for this character, deck, and encounter.
2. Treating a build recommendation as timeless
A specific card, relic, or combination can change in a balance update. A guide that names an exact build should say which version or date it reflects; without that context, use it as a suggestion to evaluate, not a guaranteed recipe. The durable question is whether the option helps your present run—not whether it once appeared in a “best build” list.

3. Following advice without understanding its reasoning
Mega Crit says prior experience with the first game is not required. Advice should therefore explain why a choice may work, rather than depend on unexplained deckbuilder shorthand. When you encounter unfamiliar terms or mechanics, check their in-game descriptions and connect them to the decision at hand: what does this option do, and what problem in your current run does it address?
4. Ignoring the difference between solo and co-op
Advice written for a solo run may not translate directly to a team. Co-op supports up to four players and includes multiplayer-specific cards and team synergies. In a group, consider how an option fits with what teammates can do instead of judging every choice as if one character had to handle the whole run alone.

5. Expecting public co-op matchmaking
Co-op is not a public matchmaking queue: Mega Crit says it is for Steam friends and does not include matchmaking. If you want to play with others, make sure you have a friend group to join or invite before planning around multiplayer.
6. Generalizing one character’s strategy to everyone
The sequel includes both new and returning characters, each with their own cards and playstyles. A choice that makes sense for one character may not suit another. Treat character-specific recommendations as conditional, and assess options against the character you selected rather than assuming a shared strategy fits every run.

7. Applying old rules of thumb without checking new systems
Familiar heuristics can be useful starting points, but they are not substitutes for understanding the mechanics in your current run. The sequel adds systems alongside new cards, relics, potions, and events. Inspect the choices and descriptions the game presents; a new mechanic may change how you should evaluate an otherwise familiar situation.
8. Treating one result as proof that a choice is always good or bad
Runs vary, and the Steam listing describes procedurally variable climbs and evolving strategies. A win does not prove every decision was optimal, and a loss does not prove one choice caused the outcome. Look at the context of the run and the reasoning behind a decision before carrying the lesson into another climb.

9. Forgetting that Early Access is an evolving snapshot
The game remains in Steam Early Access, and the developer says it plans additional content and balance work. A mechanic, available option, or strategic recommendation may change as updates arrive. Treat advice as time-stamped when it depends on exact game details, and check current official information when those details matter.
10. Assuming the game is available on every platform
The official materials reviewed describe Early Access distribution on PC, macOS, and Linux. Mega Crit says console and mobile versions likely will not arrive until after Early Access. If platform availability affects your plans, verify the current official listing rather than assuming a version exists for your device.

How to use advice without needing a fixed build
For any recommendation, separate the general decision principle from the exact interaction. “Consider how this choice supports your current run” is a broad principle; “this particular card is best with that relic” depends on the current version and the situation. Check whether advice is for your character and for solo or co-op, then compare its reasoning with the options your run actually presents.
What to know about the game’s current status
Slay the Spire 2 launched on Steam Early Access on March 5, 2026. Mega Crit describes Early Access as a period for player feedback, balancing, quality-of-life improvements, and stability work, while Steam notes the game is not complete. That context does not make every strategy uncertain: careful reading and adapting to the run remain useful. It does mean exact balance claims and platform plans should be checked against current official information.
