They offer three distinct versions of conquest: regional battles that can shift control, liberation through sabotage, and fortress capture. Other games below are looser fits, where raids, alliances, or enemy-territory combat matter more than permanently claiming every part of a map.
What “conquer the map” means in these games
Exploring a large world is not the same as conquering it. The strongest fits here let you change control, ownership, or faction influence through what you do. That change might be a region won in battle, a settlement liberated from an occupying force, a fortress taken for your army, or enemy lands claimed to extend a clan’s influence.

Those systems are not interchangeable. Some directly describe changing regional control; others are liberation fantasies or broader influence systems. The distinction matters if you want to watch territory change hands rather than simply clear activities from a map.
Games with the clearest territorial-change systems
1. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey — regional control that can change again
Odyssey is the clearest match for a map where control shifts through battles. Set during the Peloponnesian War, it lets players fight conquest battles for Athens or Sparta. Ubisoft says the winning nation controls the region afterward, but that control can change: “At the end of each battle, the winning nation will control the region – but because the world of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is constantly moving, you can always change your mind and overthrow the winner.” Ubisoft’s game-system explanation makes this a particularly direct fit for players who want a visible, reversible struggle over regions.

2. Just Cause 3 — liberate Medici by attacking a dictator’s grip on power
Just Cause 3 frames territorial change as a liberation campaign rather than a formal faction war. The game takes place in Medici, where Rico Rodriguez’s mission is to destroy the hold on power of dictator General Di Ravello. Avalanche Studios Group describes it as an open-world action game built around that premise; the developer lists PS4, Xbox One, and Steam on its official game page. Expect a destructive sandbox in which vehicles and traversal tools are central to getting around and causing upheaval. The developer’s stated world area is over 400 square miles, but that is not a standardized or independently comparable measure of map size.
3. Middle-earth: Shadow of War — take fortresses with an army
If your idea of conquest is raising a force and capturing strongholds, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a strong fit. Its official description says players go behind enemy lines to forge an army, conquer fortresses, and dominate Mordor. That makes fortress capture—not a claim that every region on the map is permanently yours—the defining territorial hook. See the official game page for its description.

- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
Games that fit through enemy territory or faction influence
4. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla — expand a clan’s influence
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a broader fit than Odyssey. Ubisoft highlights raids, alliances, and claiming enemy lands to expand clan influence. Those activities give your Viking settlement and campaign a sense of growing power, but the official description does not present it as the same kind of region-by-region, reversible control system described for Odyssey. Choose it if you want conquest to be part of a larger story of expansion rather than a map-painting loop. Ubisoft’s official page describes the game’s raids and alliances.
5. Far Cry 4 — fight through enemy territory in Kyrat
Far Cry 4 places you in Kyrat, a region under the rule of a despotic self-appointed king. Ubisoft’s description emphasizes scouting enemy territory, making it a plausible pick for open-world combat against an entrenched power. The cited official page does not, by itself, establish a complete map-control system, so treat it as an enemy-territory action game rather than a confirmed region-conquest simulator. Details are on Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4 page.

6. Far Cry 3 — open-world island combat, not a confirmed conquest-first pick
Far Cry 3 is an open-world first-person shooter set on a dangerous island. Ubisoft describes options that include stealth, close combat, and sniping, giving players different ways to approach enemy encounters. That makes it relevant if what you want is to move through hostile territory using your preferred combat style. The official description cited here does not establish map conquest as the game’s central loop, however, so it is a less certain fit than the first three entries. See Ubisoft’s game page.
How to choose the right kind of conquest
| Game | What changes | How strong is the map-control fit? | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed Odyssey | A nation wins control of a region after a conquest battle; the winner can later be overthrown. | Direct, explicit regional control. | Battle for territory amid the Peloponnesian War. |
| Just Cause 3 | Rico’s campaign aims to break a dictator’s hold on Medici. | Strong liberation fit, not described here as a reversible regional-control system. | Destructive open-world action with vehicles and traversal tools. |
| Middle-earth: Shadow of War | Fortresses are conquered with an army. | Direct fortress-conquest fit. | Build a force and dominate Mordor. |
| Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | Raids, alliances, and claimed enemy lands expand clan influence. | Broader influence fit. | Territorial expansion as part of a wider Viking campaign. |
| Far Cry 4 | The official description supports scouting enemy territory under a despotic ruler. | Candidate; a complete map-control loop is not established by that description. | Open-world action in Kyrat. |
| Far Cry 3 | The official description supports open-world combat and varied approaches to enemies. | Candidate; conquest is not established as the central loop by that description. | First-person combat, stealth, close combat, or sniping. |
What this list can—and cannot—tell you
These games suit different interpretations of “conquer the map,” rather than forming a definitive ranking of ten equivalent systems. The strongest evidence for a changing regional map is Odyssey; Just Cause 3 is about liberation, and Shadow of War centers on capturing fortresses. Valhalla extends clan influence, while the cited descriptions for Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 3 support enemy-territory action without establishing the same degree of map control.
