In Nioh 3, survival depends on adapting to the fight: use Samurai for deliberate close-range exchanges and Ninja when movement, evasion or Ninjutsu better suits the situation. You can switch between the two styles instantly, so treat them as tools—not permanent choices. These tips cover combat, upgrades, exploration, gear and co-op, with expansion content clearly separated from the base game.
How can you get better at combat?
1. Switch between Samurai and Ninja to answer the encounter
The two styles offer different ways to approach a fight, and KOEI TECMO says you can switch between them instantly or stick with one based on the challenge. Try changing styles when an enemy makes your current approach uncomfortable; there is no need to force a rotation in every encounter. KOEI TECMO’s official overview describes both styles and their combat features.

2. Learn Samurai Deflect against manageable enemies
Samurai’s Deflect blocks an enemy attack at the last moment. Since the move relies on timing, practise it in lower-pressure encounters before depending on it when a fight becomes hectic. A well-timed Deflect is a distinct Samurai option, not a reason to ignore dodging or other ways to respond.

3. Make Samurai martial arts part of your plan
Arts Proficiency enhances martial arts power, according to the official overview. Use the martial arts available to your chosen weapon and consider developing them through the relevant skill tree, rather than relying on one ordinary attack throughout a fight.

4. Choose Ninja when mobility or distance matters
Ninja emphasizes quick movement, dodging, aerial actions and Ninjutsu that can be used according to battlefield conditions. When a close-range exchange feels too risky, try a more mobile approach and use the tools available to create room or change your angle of attack.
5. Know what Mist and Evade are for
These Ninja techniques serve different purposes. Mist leaves a clone after an attack, while Evade narrowly avoids an enemy strike. KOEI TECMO describes both as ways for Ninja to outmaneuver foes and attack from behind; neither guarantees safety or a hit, so use them as options to manage positioning rather than as automatic counters.

How should you handle upgrades and equipment?
6. Review your upgrade choices when you rest at a shrine
A review by Gamepressure reports frequent opportunities at shrines to spend points across character, Guardian Spirit, style and weapon skill trees, as well as Blessings. Some Blessings improve healing-item restoration. Take a moment to check what is available and select upgrades that support the way you play, instead of letting points sit unspent by habit.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Compare new gear, then process the excess
Tom’s Guide reports that players receive large amounts of equipment and can convert weaker items into resources such as upgrade materials. Before replacing a piece, compare it with what you have equipped; then regularly clear out items you do not plan to use. This keeps your inventory more manageable while turning unwanted gear into something useful.

How should you approach exploration and tough stretches?
8. Explore with a purpose instead of chasing everything
The official game overview describes open fields that players can freely explore, including villages, yokai and the Crucible. PC Gamer’s review notes that the map can feel densely packed with collectibles. Follow your immediate objective and take detours that seem worthwhile, but do not assume every collectible must be found before you can make progress.
9. Use co-op if solo progress stalls
If you are stuck progressing alone, the official game overview points to Summon Visitor and Expeditions as ways to seek help or explore with other players. Co-op is a legitimate fallback when a solo attempt stops working; you do not need to treat asking for help as a failure.

What changes if you own the DLC?
10. Distinguish Hell Rising weapons from the base-game arsenal
As of August 19, 2026, the first expansion, Hell Rising, is available. It adds Hoko and Shield weapons for both Samurai and Ninja styles, according to KOEI TECMO’s DLC information. Those additions are expansion content; base-game players should not expect them in their available weapon selection.

| Style | Consider it when… | What it emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| Samurai | You want a grounded, face-to-face approach. | Last-moment Deflect and martial arts supported by Arts Proficiency. |
| Ninja | Movement, evasion or changing your angle feels more useful. | Quick movement, dodging, aerial actions, Ninjutsu, Mist and Evade. |
This is a situational choice, not an either-or commitment: the styles can be switched instantly. The official overview does not establish one universally best weapon, stat spread, boss tactic or route, so make choices around the challenge in front of you rather than chasing a supposedly mandatory build.
