Leon’s dry humor, combat confidence and visible weariness make him an accessible entry point for players new to the series—but “turned newbies into fans” is an editorial framing, not a measured audience result.
Why Leon’s scenes stand out in Requiem
Resident Evil Requiem pairs FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft with returning agent Leon S. Kennedy. Its story begins with a body found at an abandoned hotel in the Midwest, where Grace is investigating a string of deaths and the murder of her mother eight years earlier. Leon is sent to the hotel after a police officer goes missing; their cases eventually connect to the Raccoon City Incident. Nintendo’s story synopsis outlines that setup.

The two leads also give the game contrasting rhythms. Grace’s sections lean on evasion, puzzles and scarce resources, while Leon’s emphasize combat and crowd management, as described in the PlayStation hands-on preview and Xbox Wire’s demo report. That shift helps explain why Leon’s scenes can appeal to newcomers: they show a capable, funny action-horror lead without requiring a detailed knowledge of his past. The examples below mix scripted story beats with playable sequences, rather than pretending every moment is a separate cutscene.
Leon’s lighter, more approachable moments
1. The chainsaw-doctor retort
When an infected doctor comes at Leon with a chainsaw, Leon answers, “I want to get a second opinion.” The line, reported in the PlayStation Blog preview, is funny because it is so understated: the danger is immediate, but Leon still has enough composure to crack a joke. A reader does not need to know his history to get the character in that exchange.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
2. The confidence behind the hatchet
Leon’s hatchet gives his action scenes a close-quarters flourish. The official PlayStation game page highlights him using it to deflect a chainsaw, alongside firearms, melee attacks and parries. It is a striking demonstration of his combat style, though it is best understood as an action beat rather than a verified standalone story scene.
Playable sequences that turn tension into action
3. The balcony rifle handoff
PC Gamer’s review recalls a sequence in which Leon is handed a rifle and takes shots at zombies from a balcony after a scarier stretch with Grace. The contrast is the point: after playing a more vulnerable character, taking control of an experienced agent with a rifle can feel like a release. It also makes the game’s dual-lead structure tangible instead of merely explaining it.
4. Fighting through the burning church
PC Gamer describes Leon trapped in a burning church, facing a large infected enemy and other mutated zombies. The setting turns a combat encounter into spectacle: fire and confined space add pressure, while Leon’s ability to fight back keeps the sequence moving. It is one of the clearest examples of the game shifting from Grace’s survival-horror vulnerability to Leon’s action-horror momentum.

5. The flooded underground parking lot
In another sequence described by PC Gamer, Leon moves through a dim, flooded underground parking area as zombies rise from the water. The threat comes from the environment as much as from any one enemy: dark water can conceal what is approaching. Leon’s confidence gives the scene a different mood from a Grace encounter, but it does not make the setting safe.
6. Grenades and a crowded fight
The PlayStation hands-on preview describes Leon using grenades in combat-focused sections built around managing groups of enemies. That playable pressure—choosing when and where to use an explosive while keeping a crowd under control—shows why his sequences feel distinct from Grace’s resource-conscious evasion. It is a gameplay rhythm, not a separate cutscene.
The weight behind Leon’s action persona
7. An older hero carrying the past
Leon’s confidence does not mean he is untouched by what came before. Director Kōshi Nakanishi told the PlayStation Blog that the team wanted the sacrifices and tragedies Leon had experienced to show in his appearance and personality, making him “maybe a little bit more pessimistic.” Nakanishi’s comment supports reading this version of Leon as a seasoned fighter with accumulated wear, rather than assigning a specific unverified emotion to one scene.

Ending spoiler: the choice involving Elpis
8. The central-chamber decision
Major ending spoiler: Near the conclusion, the player faces a choice involving Elpis in the central chamber. GameSpot’s endings guide describes different outcomes associated with choosing “Hope” or destroying Elpis. Because this is a player choice, there is no single fixed ending to present as Leon’s definitive final scene. Its significance comes from asking the player to decide what happens next, rather than simply watching Leon resolve the story.
What makes Leon a good entry point for newcomers
Leon’s appeal in Requiem comes from the combination of readable traits: he stays composed under pressure, uses humor to cut through dread, and can meet threats with force. The game gives those qualities room to breathe by alternating his action-oriented play with Grace’s more fragile survival-horror sections. At the same time, the story hints at the history behind his confidence, so the character can feel experienced without requiring newcomers to arrive as experts.
For more on the game’s dual protagonists and Leon’s tools, see the official PlayStation feature page. The previews describe limited play sessions, and individual review impressions should not be mistaken for a claim that every player—or every newcomer—will respond the same way.
