Begin Valheim by securing a roof, food and a sheltered workbench before exploring. Keep the Rested buff active, prepare three foods before combat, learn to parry, and follow the progression through Eikthyr, copper and bronze rather than rushing into the Swamp. The ten tips below turn those priorities into a practical first-ten-day plan.

1. Gather the basics before you explore
Your first minutes should produce the materials that unlock almost everything else. Pick up loose stones, punch small trees for wood, collect berries, and walk along the shoreline for flint. Flint is especially common beside water, so a short beach circuit is more efficient than wandering inland.

Make the first tools in this order
- Stone axe: lets you cut better trees and gather wood quickly.
- Hammer: opens the building menu and lets you place structural pieces.
- Workbench: provides the first crafting and repair station once sheltered.
Keep a reserve of wood and stone instead of spending every piece immediately. You will need both for a fire, walls, a roof, a bed and replacement tools. Berries and other early food are worth collecting even when your inventory is full of building material: food determines your maximum health and stamina, so arriving at a fight hungry is effectively arriving with weaker equipment.
2. Shelter the workbench and build a stable first base
A workbench is not fully useful in the open. Give it walls and a roof, then test that the crafting and repair functions are available. A tiny hut is enough at first, but make it structurally sound before expanding it.

Prevent collapses
Valheim uses support for building pieces. Long roofs and upper floors need beams, posts or other supports that connect them back to the ground. If a piece changes color as you place it, treat that as a warning that it is poorly supported; add a post or shorten the span before adding more weight.
Vent the fire
Place the hearth under a roof but leave a route for smoke to escape. A chimney opening or raised roof section keeps the interior usable instead of filling it with smoke. Put a bed inside the protected area so sleeping is safe and so you can establish a convenient spawn point.

Repairing equipment at a workbench costs no materials. Make a habit of repairing before every expedition; carrying damaged tools into a new biome creates an avoidable return trip when the durability bar reaches zero.
3. Keep the Rested buff active
The Rested effect improves health and stamina regeneration, which affects both travel and combat. Guide sources report that resting near a fire while sheltered for roughly 20 seconds can grant it; sleeping in a bed also grants Rested. The exact timing and duration can change with patches, so treat the on-screen status effect as the authority.

Use a repeatable routine
- Return to a roofed, fire-equipped shelter before a major trip.
- Rest until the effect appears, then eat and repair gear.
- Refresh it before a boss summon, a long boat journey or entry into a dangerous biome.
Do not assume a fire alone is enough. If the game does not recognize the area as sheltered, improve the roof or walls and try again. A rested character can recover stamina between attacks and dodges far more reliably than one who relies on food alone.
4. Read the weather before committing to a journey
Weather is a survival mechanic, not just scenery. Cold lowers health and stamina regeneration, while the Wet status adds further penalties. Those effects are most dangerous when you are swimming, climbing, fighting at night or trying to retreat with a nearly empty stamina bar.

Plan routes with fallback shelters. A small outpost containing a roof, fire and chest can save a corpse run when a storm arrives far from your main base.
5. Eat before every serious fight
Food sets your maximum health and stamina, not merely a temporary healing total. One beginner guide recommends eating three foods before combat; use that as a safe starting rule while learning enemy patterns. Choose the best foods you can currently craft or gather, then wait for their effects to be active before summoning a boss or entering a burial chamber.

Make food part of preparation
- Carry an extra meal for the walk home, not only the fight itself.
- Replace expired or low-value food before leaving the base.
- Keep a separate chest for food so restocking takes seconds.
- Do not spend all stamina on attacks; a larger stamina pool is useful only if some remains for blocking, dodging and retreating.
If a new biome kills you almost instantly, do not automatically grind skills. First check whether you ate, whether your armor and weapons are upgraded, whether Rested is active and whether the encounter requires a resistance effect or a different approach.
6. Learn to parry, then manage stamina with hit-and-dodge
Blocking immediately before an attack lands can parry it. Beginner guides describe the resulting stagger as an opening for roughly two or three free hits, but that hit count is guide-reported rather than an official constant and can vary by enemy, weapon and patch.

- Use a shield with an enemy whose attack animation you can read.
- Hold your block, release or time it just before impact, and look for the stagger.
- Deliver one or two controlled attacks, then back away instead of emptying your stamina bar.
- Repeat the cycle: block or parry, strike, dodge, recover.
Dodging is often safer than trading blows. Attack only when you have enough stamina to escape the next swing. Stronger enemy variants are marked by stars and a different color; give them more space, avoid fighting several at once and consider returning after upgrading equipment.
7. Carry a bow and enough arrows
A bow is a strong first ranged option because it lets you pull one enemy away from a group, attack flying or awkward targets and deal damage while you learn an opponent’s range. Craft it early, then keep a dependable supply of arrows in the same chest as your weapons.

Use ranged attacks deliberately
- Scout from cover and shoot before entering a crowded room.
- Back away while drawing rather than standing still in melee range.
- Use terrain, doorways and elevation to create distance, but never rely on a position from which you cannot retreat.
- Recover arrows when it is safe; replace the stack before leaving for a long expedition.
The bow does not replace a shield or melee weapon. Carry both so you can switch when an enemy closes the gap or when a narrow room makes shooting impractical.

8. Pin the map and organize storage from day one
Procedural worlds contain more points of interest than you can remember. Pin copper deposits, Burial Chambers, berry locations and merchants as soon as you discover them. Use names that answer a future question, such as “copper east of base” or “berries near river,” rather than a generic marker.
Use a simple chest system

Leave a small “expedition” chest beside the door with food, arrows, a spare weapon and repair-ready gear. Consistent labels reduce the time between a death and a recovery trip, especially when a gravestone is far from home.

The intended opening progression points you toward Eikthyr. Find two Deer trophies, carry them to the mystical altar and use them to summon the boss. Bring full food, the Rested effect, repaired equipment, a shield and a bow, and clear nearby terrain so the fight does not turn into an accidental battle with additional creatures.

Why Eikthyr matters
Defeating Eikthyr unlocks his antler pickaxe, which lets you mine copper in the Black Forest. Copper and tin are the gateway to the Bronze Age, so the boss is a progression key rather than an optional challenge to postpone indefinitely.

Because that percentage is not an official immutable figure, focus on the actionable lesson: carry only what you can afford to lose, mark the death location and prepare a recovery route before attempting a risky corpse run.
10. Use the first ten days to reach bronze, not the Swamp
There is no universal day length for a procedurally generated world, but a focused first-ten-day plan keeps your technology and preparation aligned. Adjust the order when terrain, weather or a distant boss altar demands it.

Build the systems that make bronze sustainable
In the Bronze Age, a Cultivator lets you till land for on-site farming of carrots, turnips and cones. Plant near a protected base so you can replant after harvesting. You can also lead boars into a wooden enclosure with a gate and feed them mushrooms to tame them; keep the pen secure before leaving, because an exposed herd is easy to lose.
Choose a base that supports travel
A coastal base makes boat access easier, and a dock near the main buildings saves repeated trips between storage and shore. Portals are excellent for moving people and ordinary supplies, but they cannot transport metals such as ore, bars and nails. Plan mining runs around that restriction: sail or walk the metal to a smelting site, then use portals for everything the game allows.

When a biome consistently overwhelms you, pause and improve the preparation loop instead of forcing the fight. Better food, upgraded equipment, Rested status, appropriate resistances, a marked route and a nearby shelter solve more problems than repeatedly recovering an unprepared body.
