Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe reliable pattern is to select a bounded log excerpt, label it with its source and time, then send it through either a configured local mailer or authenticated SMTP. On Linux, a short shell pipeline can use tail, an optional severity filter, and mailx. A Python script gives you the same selection logic plus SMTP authentication, timeouts, size limits, and explicit failure logging. Schedule the notifier with cron, a systemd timer, Windows Task Scheduler, or an equivalent service, and keep notifier failures in a separate local log.

Start by identifying where the errors are recorded
The command that extracts the latest errors depends on the log source. A plain text application log is read with ordinary text tools. A systemd service normally writes to the journal, which is queried with journalctl. Traditional syslog installations write text files whose paths differ by distribution. Confirm the source before writing the mail step; otherwise a perfectly working notifier can report an empty or unrelated file.

|---|---|---|
| Plain text application log | tail -n 50 -- /path/to/app.log |
Quote paths and verify the account running the scheduler can read the file. |
| systemd journal | journalctl -u your-service.service -n 50 --no-pager |
Use a unit, time window, or both so an old journal cannot produce an unbounded message. |
| Debian-family syslog | tail -n 50 -- /var/log/syslog |
The exact file depends on the distribution and its logging configuration. |
| RHEL-family syslog | tail -n 50 -- /var/log/messages |
Permissions, rotation, and facility routing can change what appears in the file. |
Microsoft documents that PowerShell on Linux writes to journald and that journalctl --grep powershell can search those entries. The same journal tools work for other units when the service name is known. If you are unsure, run the extraction command manually first and inspect several lines before adding delivery.
Define exactly what “latest errors” means
A recurring alert needs a deterministic selection rule. “Latest” can mean the newest 50 physical lines, all matching lines in the last 15 minutes, or the newest 50 lines that contain a severity word. Put that rule in the message so a future reader can tell what was and was not examined.

Choose a bounded line or time limit
- Line limit:
tail -n 50is simple and predictable, but a single stack trace can span many lines. - Time window:
journalctl --since '15 minutes ago'follows event time and is usually better for a service with uneven traffic. - Both: apply a time window and then cap the result, preventing an outage from generating a huge email.
Always enforce a maximum message size in code as well as at the extraction stage. Log rotation can replace or truncate a file between runs, and a sudden burst can otherwise exceed an SMTP server’s limits.
Filter by severity or pattern
For text logs, a case-insensitive filter such as grep -Ei 'ERROR|CRITICAL|FATAL' is a useful starting point. Add a service name, request identifier, or another stable pattern when the file contains several components. Pattern matching is application-specific: a line containing the word “error” in a player name or URL can be a false positive. Test the expression against known good and bad lines.

Most scheduled notifiers should send nothing when there are no matching lines; otherwise the mailbox fills with “all clear” messages. A different policy is appropriate when the email itself is a heartbeat. Make the choice explicit: exit successfully without sending for an empty match, or send a clearly labeled empty report. Do not let an empty pipeline silently turn into a message containing only a subject.
Shell solution with mailx or sendmail
When the host already has a functioning mail-delivery agent, a shell script is the smallest solution. POSIX mailx passes message input to mail-delivery software, but options and authentication differ among implementations. Verify the variant installed on your target system and test delivery from the same account that cron or your service manager will use.
Minimal plain-file command
tail -n 50 -- /path/to/app.log | mailx -s 'Recent errors on HOSTNAME' [email protected]
This sends the newest 50 lines whether or not they are errors. To filter first, place the filter before mailx:

tail -n 200 -- /path/to/app.log | grep -Ei 'ERROR|CRITICAL' | tail -n 50 | mailx -s 'Recent errors on HOSTNAME' [email protected]
The first tail limits the scan, the filter selects likely failures, and the second tail caps the email. Quote every path and subject. Do not put SMTP passwords on the command line; process listings and scheduler logs can expose them.
A maintainable shell script
Save a script such as /usr/local/sbin/error-log-mail.sh, make it executable, and run it with the least-privileged account that can read the source:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu
LOG='/path/to/app.log'
RECIPIENT='[email protected]'
HOST=$(hostname -s)
LINES=50
TMP=$(mktemp)
trap 'rm -f "$TMP"' EXIT
{
printf 'Host: %sn' "$HOST"
printf 'Source: %sn' "$LOG"
printf 'Selection: newest %s lines matching ERROR or CRITICALn' "$LINES"
printf 'Generated (UTC): %snn' "$(date -u '+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ')"
tail -n 200 -- "$LOG" | grep -Ei 'ERROR|CRITICAL' | tail -n "$LINES"
} > "$TMP"
if [ ! -s "$TMP" ]; then
exit 0
fi
mailx -s "Recent errors on $HOST" "$RECIPIENT" < "$TMP"
The example deliberately inspects more lines than it sends, because filtering can remove most of the newest block. Adjust that scan limit to your log volume. If your grep returns a nonzero status when there is no match, set -e can terminate the script before the empty-report decision; handle that status explicitly in production, for example by appending || true to the filter pipeline and checking the temporary file afterward.
Journald and syslog variants
For a systemd unit, replace the text-file pipeline with a bounded journal query:
journalctl -u your-service.service --since '15 minutes ago' -n 200 --no-pager | grep -Ei 'ERROR|CRITICAL' | tail -n 50 | mailx -s 'Recent service errors on HOSTNAME' [email protected]
Include --no-pager so a scheduler never waits for an interactive pager. Add --utc when your installed journalctl supports it, or label the output with a UTC generation time as shown above. For text syslog, substitute the actual path, such as /var/log/syslog on many Debian-based systems or /var/log/messages on many RHEL-based systems. Log rotation may require a group permission or a dedicated reader account.

When local mail delivery is not enough
mailx and sendmail generally hand the message to a local mail-delivery agent. They do not guarantee that the host is configured to relay mail to the public internet. If the command exits successfully but the message never arrives, inspect the MTA queue and its mail-facility logs. Sendmail records activity through syslog’s LOG_MAIL facility, so those records are separate from the application log you are reporting.
Python solution with authenticated SMTP
Python is useful when extraction, formatting, and delivery need to remain in one portable script. The standard logging package provides levels from DEBUG through CRITICAL, file handlers, formatters, and SMTP-capable handlers. Python’s Logging HOWTO gives this example of the design goal: “An application may want to send all log messages to a log file, all log messages of error or higher to stdout, and all messages of critical to an email address.”
The script below reads the newest portion of a text file, keeps only matching lines, adds UTC and host context, enforces a character limit, and sends through an authenticated SMTP connection. It records notifier failures separately instead of writing them into the application log being inspected.
#!/usr/bin/env python3

Provide ALERT_TO, SMTP_HOST, SMTP_PORT, SMTP_USER, and SMTP_PASSWORD through a protected scheduler environment, a secret manager, or a root-readable environment file. The example uses STARTTLS on port 587 as a configuration pattern; your provider may require a different port, implicit TLS, an application password, or an approved relay. Do not assume that a successful TCP connection means the server will accept unauthenticated mail.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Scheduling without hiding failures
Cron
Run the script from an absolute path and redirect standard output and error to a notifier log. A five-minute schedule is an example, not a universal recommendation:
*/5 * * * * /usr/bin/python3 /usr/local/sbin/error_log_mailer.py >>/var/log/error-log-mailer-cron.log 2>&1
Cron has a sparse environment. Set the required SMTP variables in a protected environment file or wrapper, use absolute paths, and set the correct working directory in the script. If a command depends on a profile or virtual environment, invoke that interpreter explicitly.
systemd timer
A service-and-timer pair gives clearer status and retry behavior. The service can run the Python script, while the timer controls cadence:
[Unit]
Description=Email recent error lines
[Service]
Type=oneshot
User=logalert
EnvironmentFile=/etc/logalert/smtp.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/python3 /usr/local/sbin/error_log_mailer.py
[Unit]
Description=Run error-log mailer every five minutes
[Timer]
OnBootSec=5min
OnUnitActiveSec=5min
Persistent=true
[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
Store the two units under the appropriate systemd directory, run systemctl daemon-reload, enable and start the timer, then inspect systemctl status and journalctl -u for the notifier itself. The Persistent=true setting can run a missed activation after a reboot; decide whether that catch-up email is useful for your incident policy.

Windows Task Scheduler and PowerShell
On Windows, Task Scheduler can launch a PowerShell or Python script under a service account. PowerShell’s Get-Content -Tail and Select-String provide the same bounded extraction pattern for text logs. Delivery still depends on the SMTP method or relay available in your environment, so keep credentials in Windows Credential Manager, a managed secret, or an equivalent protected store rather than in the task action arguments. For PowerShell on Linux, query journald with journalctl as documented by Microsoft, then pass the bounded output to the same delivery routine.
Make the email useful during an incident
The body should answer four questions without opening another tool:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Where? Include hostname, container or instance identifier when relevant, and the log path or journal unit.
- When? Add a UTC generation timestamp and preserve the original log timestamps.
- What was selected? State the line count, time window, and matching expression.
- How much was omitted? Say when the excerpt was capped or character-truncated.
Use a stable subject such as Recent errors on host-17. If several services share a mailbox, include the unit name in the subject. Avoid putting secrets, access tokens, session cookies, or full request bodies into an email; redact them before delivery or filter them out at extraction time.
Troubleshoot by separating extraction, scheduling, and delivery
The script runs but no email arrives
- Run the exact command interactively as the scheduler account and confirm that it produces a non-empty body.
- Check the notifier’s own log for connection, authentication, DNS, or certificate errors.
- For
mailxorsendmail, inspect the local MTA queue andLOG_MAILor equivalent mail-facility records. - Confirm the recipient, relay policy, firewall egress, and spam or quarantine folders.
The report is always empty
Check case sensitivity, multiline stack traces, rotation paths, and the account’s read permission. For journald, verify the unit name with journalctl --list-units or a manual query. For a text log, print the last 200 lines without filtering and compare them with the expression. A filter that expects “ERROR” will not match numeric severity codes or application-specific labels unless you include them.
The message is too large or duplicates old errors
Lower both the extraction limit and the final character cap. Use a time window for journald. A simple tail-based script can resend the same lines on every run because it has no state; that is expected. If deduplication matters, store the last delivered event identifier or timestamp in a protected state file, handle rotation, and decide how to recover when the state file is lost.
Permissions fail only under the scheduler
Cron, systemd, and Task Scheduler may use a different user, home directory, PATH, timezone, and environment than your shell. Use absolute paths, test the service account, grant read access to only the required log or journal group, and keep SMTP secrets readable only by that account.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Identify the real source: file, journal unit, or syslog facility.
- Bound by lines, time, and characters.
- Filter deliberately and test false positives.
- Include UTC time, host, source, and selection rule.
- Choose local mail delivery only when the host’s MTA is known to relay successfully; otherwise configure authenticated SMTP.
- Keep credentials out of command arguments and source control.
- Log notifier failures separately from application errors.
- Test extraction, authentication, scheduling, and end-to-end arrival independently.
- Review behavior after log rotation, reboot, network loss, and an empty match.
