PlayStation’s official support material does not identify one cause or one fix for this symptom. What works is a sequence of checks, run in order from the cheapest and most general to the most account-specific. Start with PlayStation Network service status and your connection, then confirm you’re opening the list from the right place, then check online status and privacy, and only then look at account restrictions and PlayStation Support.
Keep one distinction in mind throughout: a list that fails to open or stays blank is a loading problem, while friends who show as offline or can’t be found are a status or visibility problem. The checks below are labeled so you can skip the ones that don’t match your symptom.
Sort your symptom before you start
Use this table to decide where to begin. Each row points to the checks most likely to be relevant, not to a guaranteed fix.

Checks 1 to 4: service and connection
1. Check PlayStation Network service status
Open PlayStation’s network status page from the account support pages. If the relevant service shows an alert, the problem is on PlayStation’s side. Wait, then try the list again once the service is restored. Status pages change constantly, so check the live page rather than relying on any status described in an article, including this one.

2. Run the console’s internet connection test
Confirm the console is connected to your network, then run its built-in connection test. On PS5, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status. On PS4, go to Settings > Network and use the connection test there. If the test reports a problem, fix that first. A failed test means the friends list is not the root issue.
3. Restart the console and your internet device
If the connection test is unstable, turn off the console and your modem or router, wait five minutes, then turn them back on. PlayStation’s party voice chat connection guidance recommends this sequence. It is a general network step, not a confirmed fix for the friends list itself, but it clears many temporary connection faults before you change any settings.
4. Try a wired connection if it’s practical
PlayStation’s party connection guidance recommends a wired internet connection where possible. If your console is on Wi-Fi and the list fails intermittently, connecting it to the router with an Ethernet cable is a reasonable test. The cable is optional, and PlayStation does not say a wired connection will resolve a friends list problem. If the list loads only on the wired connection, the Wi-Fi link is the likely weak point.

Checks 5 and 6: open the list correctly and check status
5. Open the friends list from the correct location
The entry point depends on the device you’re using:

- PS4: press the PS button to open the Quick Menu and select Friends, or open Friends from the function screen.
- PlayStation App: select Friends to view the list. App labels can change between releases, so if the option is named differently, look for the friends or social section.
If the list opens in one of these places but not another, you have found a clue that the problem is tied to one interface. That is a diagnostic inference from the pattern, not a confirmed PlayStation cause. Try the list in the PlayStation App on your phone; if it loads there while the console stays blank, focus on the console’s connection and software state.
6. Check your own and your friends’ online status
Status is shown as an icon on a player’s profile or friend list. PlayStation’s online-status guide puts it this way: “You can tell what a player’s online status is by checking the icon on their profile or your friend list.” Check your own status first:

- PS5: select your profile from the home screen or Control Center, then choose Online Status.
- PS4: open Profile > Set Online Status, or use Quick Menu > Online Status.
- PlayStation App: open your profile and go to Profile > Online Status.
If your status is set to Appear Offline, your friends will see you as unavailable, even though your list itself is working. Status also carries across devices. Signing in on multiple PS5 consoles, or on PS5 and PS4, means a change on one applies to the others. If a friend appears offline, that is their status setting, not a broken list.
Checks 7 and 8: privacy and friend discovery
7. Review your privacy settings
Privacy controls decide who can see your online status, current game, gaming history, friends, and other profile information. The settings are tied to your account and apply on every device you sign in to. Where to find them:

- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. You can select a preset or customize individual settings.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings.
Privacy also controls search and friend requests. PlayStation notes that search results can vary with a player’s privacy settings, and that your own privacy settings decide who can send you a friend request. If the trouble is that you can’t find or add someone, review these before assuming the list is broken.

For child accounts, a family manager, parent, or guardian controls the available settings and may limit what the child can change. If you are a child user and cannot change a setting, ask the family manager on your account.
8. Compare another supported interface
If your friends appear on another device or in the PlayStation App while they don’t appear on the console, the account settings are probably fine. Your console’s software, connection, or the list’s state on that device is the more likely cause. Use this to narrow the problem, then return to checks 2 and 3 for the console.

9. Check for a communication suspension
A communication suspension restricts social features, including interacting with other players. When one applies, using a social feature shows an error rather than a list that simply fails to load. PlayStation directs users to check their account status through My Support. If a suspension is listed there, the restriction applies to your account and will not clear by changing the network or the console. A suspension notice is the only situation in this guide where the account itself, not the device, is the cause.

Check 10: contact PlayStation Support
10. Contact PlayStation Support if the checks fail
If the service is running, your connection tests pass, the list opens in the correct place, your status and privacy settings are as you want them, and no suspension is listed, contact PlayStation Support. Describe which checks you’ve already completed, and say whether the list fails on the console, in the app, or both. That detail shortens the diagnosis.
Some guides online recommend clearing caches, rebuilding a database, changing DNS settings, or forwarding ports. PlayStation’s official support material does not document these as fixes for this symptom, so they are not included here. Changing DNS or port settings can also create new connection problems that are harder to undo.
