What is Tomba! Special Edition?
Tomba!, also known as Tombi! in some territories, is a 2.5D platform-adventure in which Tomba leaps, bites, and throws his way through quests involving characters, relics, and hostile pigs. The official Steam description characterizes its structure as a blend of linear and nonlinear play. Steam’s official listing calls it “a platforming adventure that perfectly fuses linear and nonlinear gameplay styles.”
The Special Edition is an enhanced re-release, not a new sequel. It preserves the original game and adds convenience options and archival content. The listing details establish what is included, but do not by themselves show how well the additions work in practice.
What do the reviews and ratings say?
The available store feedback is encouraging, but the two platforms report different measures and audiences. Steam’s page showed 88% positive from 724 user reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026. The US PlayStation Store showed an average of 4.79 out of 5 from 1,694 ratings on that date; Sony says its reviews come from verified owners and are evaluated by moderators. Both totals can change, and neither is a professional critic score.

Steam’s listing also displays excerpts attributed to GamingTrend, GINX TV, and Hey Poor Player. One GamingTrend excerpt calls the game “incredibly special” and expresses hope it receives more recognition. Those snippets are not enough to establish a full critic consensus, so the safest verdict is that player response on the two storefronts is positive while the broader critical picture is not settled by these signals.

The edition’s extras fall into two useful groups: features that can make a replay more forgiving, and material aimed at preservation and fans.

The documented listings do not establish a meaningful performance difference between digital platforms. Choose based on your preferred system and, for Switch, whether handheld play matters. Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if you enjoy older platform-adventures with quests and nonlinear exploration, or want a convenient way to revisit a 1997 game.
- The added value is clearest if save-anywhere and rewind options appeal to you, or you are interested in the museum, music, and creator interview.
- Think carefully if you are buying primarily for a unified critic verdict or evidence of platform performance: the available ratings are storefront user signals, and the cited listings do not provide comparative performance testing.
- For collectors, the PS5 Classic Edition has substantial physical extras, but the checked official page showed it sold out.
To decide whether it is worth playing after patches, separate the question of the game itself from the value of the re-release additions.
