Start by checking whether Destiny 2 or PlayStation Network is having a service problem; if both are operating normally, work through the low-risk checks before changing router settings. The steps below help distinguish a game or console hiccup from unstable Wi-Fi, a router configuration issue, or a problem your internet provider needs to investigate. No home-network change can fix every disconnect.
1. Check Destiny 2 and PlayStation Network status
Before restarting equipment or changing settings, check Bungie’s Destiny server and update status and PlayStation Network status. Bungie identifies service outages as a common reason for server errors. If either service reports a problem, wait for it to be resolved rather than troubleshooting your router; status pages can change, so check them when the disconnect happens.
2. Write down the exact error code
Note the full code shown on screen before dismissing it. Destiny’s codes point to different kinds of connection failure, and the next useful step depends on which one appears. Search the code in Bungie Help and use the matching guidance rather than treating every disconnect as a NAT problem.
- BEAVER, FLATWORM, or LEOPARD: Bungie describes these as failures to connect a console to another player’s console. Packet loss, ISP congestion or saturation, Wi-Fi instability, and router configuration can contribute; strict NAT is associated with these errors more often. Bungie’s BEAVER guidance covers this family.
- CENTIPEDE: A general network error caused by losing connection to Destiny servers. Strict NAT, ISP restrictions, institutional networks, and regional packet loss are among the possible factors. Bungie’s page gives an example of 25% packet loss from the UK coinciding with error reports; that is an example, not a current or general packet-loss rate. See Bungie’s CENTIPEDE guidance.
- BANJO: Trouble connecting to or maintaining a connection with Destiny matchmaking servers. Retry or relaunch the game first; if it persists, Bungie also recommends testing a wired connection. For persistent PlayStation login cases, follow the specific profile procedure in Bungie’s BANJO article, including its backup caveat.
- NP-104627-0: PlayStation says this PS5 code means the console lost its connection to a server. Run the PS5 connection test and restart the console; use Ethernet if possible. PlayStation’s error-code guidance provides the console-specific steps.
3. Close and relaunch Destiny 2
Exit Destiny 2 fully, then start it again and retry the activity. This is a quick way to rule out a temporary matchmaking or server connection failure, particularly when the error is BANJO. If the same problem returns, continue with the console and network checks rather than repeatedly relaunching.

4. Restart the PS5 and clear its cache if needed
Restart the PS5, then test Destiny again. If disconnects persist, clearing the console cache is a reasonable next troubleshooting step; Bungie includes restart and cache clearing among its general disconnect and installation guidance. Cache clearing may help with a console or game-state problem, but it cannot repair packet loss, an ISP fault, or an outage. Follow PlayStation’s instructions for entering Safe Mode and clearing cache rather than selecting reset or reinstall options. 5. Power-cycle the modem and router
Turn off and unplug the modem and router, wait briefly, then reconnect them and allow the internet connection to return fully before launching Destiny. If they are a single combined unit, power-cycle that device. Bungie lists a modem/router power cycle as a possible connection fix. See Bungie’s general connection guidance.

6. Test the PS5 internet connection
On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. This checks the console’s connection and helps separate a PS5 network problem from an issue limited to Destiny. Also see whether other online games or services work. If the PS5 test fails or multiple services disconnect, focus on the home connection or ISP; if the test succeeds and only Destiny fails, retain the error code and check Bungie’s service and code-specific guidance. 7. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet connection
If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet and test Destiny again. Bungie strongly recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can introduce signal-strength and stability problems. If the wired test is reliable while Wi-Fi is not, wireless signal, interference, or stability becomes a plausible cause; it does not prove the router or ISP is otherwise faultless. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. Bungie’s BEAVER guidance and its Network Troubleshooting Guide recommend wired testing.

8. Improve Wi-Fi conditions if Ethernet is not practical
Try to make the wireless path more stable before changing advanced router settings:
- Move the PS5 closer to the router and reduce walls, furniture, or other obstructions between them.
- Reduce nearby sources of wireless interference and pause heavy competing Wi-Fi use while testing Destiny.
- If your router supports it, try a less congested Wi-Fi channel or follow the router manufacturer’s guidance for improving wireless stability.
These checks address signal quality and congestion; they will not resolve a Bungie service issue or an upstream ISP fault. Bungie’s network guide discusses Wi-Fi stability and interference.

9. Check NAT and UPnP only after the simpler tests
Router changes are not the first response to a disconnect. Bungie recommends enabling UPnP where possible; port forwarding is an alternative for some setups if UPnP cannot be used. Router interfaces and instructions differ, and Bungie warns that opening ports may lower network security. Consult your router manufacturer’s documentation and avoid copying settings blindly.
For reference, Bungie’s PS5 port table lists TCP ports 80, 443, 1935, and 3478–3480, and UDP ports 3478, 3479, 49152–65535, and 27015–27200 as ports to open. Its port-forwarding guidance lists TCP 1935 and 3478–3480 (or TCP 1935, 3074, and 3478–3480 if the router supports both protocols), and UDP 3074 and 3478–3479. These are Bungie’s stated values, not universal router instructions; use the matching procedure for your own device. 10. Escalate persistent problems with useful evidence
Contact your ISP when the connection itself looks unstable
If the PS5 test fails, several online services disconnect, or wired play still suffers, contact your ISP and ask it to check modem signal levels, packet loss, and upstream stability while Destiny is running. Bungie notes that damaged equipment, modem signal levels, competing traffic, and upstream congestion can contribute to latency or packet loss, whose symptoms may overlap. It suggests checking signal levels while actively playing or logging into Destiny. Bungie’s latency and packet-loss guidance.
Contact Bungie when the issue appears limited to Destiny
If other online services work, the PS5 test succeeds, and Destiny continues to disconnect after the basic checks, provide Bungie with the exact error code and when it occurs. Regional packet loss or a service-side condition can affect players beyond your home network; Bungie’s CENTIPEDE guidance, for example, describes regional conditions that cannot necessarily be corrected by changing a player’s router. How much bandwidth does Destiny 2 use?
Bungie says Destiny may request up to 1 Mbps of download and upload bandwidth, and live gameplay may use up to 1 gigabyte per hour. These are possible figures from Bungie’s guide, whose publication year is not stated; they are not a guaranteed minimum speed or a fixed usage rate for every player.
