Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Destiny 2 closes, freezes, or disconnects on PS5, first identify which symptom you have: a game crash points toward updates or damaged local game data, while a disconnect usually calls for checking Bungie’s service status and your connection. Work through the relevant steps below in order; no single fix is established for every crash.
1. Identify what happened and record the full error code
Notice whether Destiny 2 closed to the PS5 home screen, froze, or stayed open while disconnecting from the activity. Write down the complete error code if one appears. A PlayStation code and a Destiny code use different troubleshooting routes: look up a PS5 CE, NP, or WS code in PlayStation’s error-code index, and follow Bungie’s guidance for a Destiny word code. Bungie explains the distinction in its disconnection and error-code guidance.
2. Check Destiny service status and notices
Before changing console settings, check Bungie’s Destiny 2 server-issues page for service or connection notices. Bungie says Destiny being offline is the most common reason for its server error messages. A service problem can resemble a local fault, but it does not explain a game that consistently closes to the home screen.
3. Install available Destiny 2 updates
On PS5, highlight Destiny 2 on the home screen, press the options button, and choose Check for Update. Install any available update before launching the game. Bungie’s PS5 installation and update instructions note that available updates are required. If the code is CAT, Bungie says a new Destiny update is available; apply it before relaunching, as described in its CAT error-code guidance.

4. Check for a PS5 system software update
Use PlayStation’s current support instructions to check for and install PS5 system software updates. Keep the console on its normal update path rather than assuming a system update will fix every game crash; this is a basic compatibility check, not a guaranteed repair.
5. Close Destiny 2 completely and restart the game
If the game is still open or frozen, press the PS button, highlight Destiny 2 in the control center, press the options button, and choose Close Game. Launch it again from the home screen. Bungie recommends closing and restarting the application for one-off Destiny errors. If the same crash returns, continue rather than repeatedly relaunching.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
6. Restart the PS5
From the PS5 control center, select Power and then Restart PS5. After the console starts again, launch Destiny 2. A restart is a low-impact check for a temporary console or game-state problem; it does not establish the cause of a recurring crash.
7. Clear the PS5 cache
Bungie recommends clearing the console cache as part of its troubleshooting for MARMOT, an error associated with corrupted Destiny 2 game files. To follow the documented power-off procedure, fully shut down the PS5, unplug its power cable, leave it unplugged for at least five minutes, reconnect it, and start the console. Then relaunch Destiny 2. Bungie’s PS5 installation guidance describes this cache procedure; its MARMOT guidance places it before reinstalling if the issue persists.

8. Reinstall Destiny 2 if crashes persist
Repeated crashes or suspected damaged installation files may justify a reinstall. Bungie says corrupted or faulty Destiny installation data can contribute to gameplay problems and lists consistent crashing as a reason to reinstall. Its PS5 instructions call for removing Destiny content and add-ons before reinstalling. This requires downloading the game again and may take time. Bungie also states that Destiny characters and progression are not stored on the console, so reinstalling or clearing cache does not remove them.
9. Rebuild the PS5 database for persistent MARMOT-like issues
If the MARMOT error or corruption symptoms remain after the earlier steps, Bungie documents rebuilding the database as an advanced option. Turn off the PS5, then press and hold its power button until you hear the second beep to start Safe Mode. Connect the controller by USB, press the PS button, and select Rebuild Database. Bungie says this scans the drive, does not delete files, and may address issues such as corruption. It is not a promised performance boost or a universal fix for crashes.

10. Use the network troubleshooting path only for disconnects
If Destiny stays open but loses its connection, test the network rather than treating it as a game-file crash. Bungie notes that Destiny may disconnect during a temporary network drop even when PSN or party chat remains connected.
- Test wired connectivity: For CANARY, Bungie says Destiny cannot detect a home-network connection and recommends temporarily switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet to test Wi-Fi stability. See Bungie’s CANARY guidance.
- Power-cycle the network equipment: Bungie’s server-issues troubleshooting includes clearing cache and power-cycling the modem or router, followed by further network troubleshooting if needed.
- Compare other services: Check whether other online games or services also have trouble, and note whether switching to wired changes the Destiny symptom.
A wired test can help diagnose connection instability; it will not repair corrupted game files or serve as a general cure for application crashes.

When to consider a factory reset or contact support
Reserve a factory reset for a continuing console-level problem after the less disruptive steps. Bungie mentions it only as a last resort for persistent MARMOT issues and warns that it may remove everything on the hard drive unless Reset and Keep Games is selected. Follow current PlayStation instructions and protect important local data before proceeding. If the problem appears to involve the console itself, contact PlayStation Support; for Destiny-specific codes, use Bungie’s code-specific help.
