Recommended Free Tools
There is no universal “best” Decky Loader plugin: the right choice depends on whether you want a tidier library, more interface customization, compatibility clues, deeper system controls, or access to another game launcher. Decky is a community-made homebrew plugin launcher for Steam Deck, not a Valve feature; plugins can change or stop working after SteamOS or Steam client updates. Check the current listing and project release notes before installing.
What Decky Loader adds—and what to check first
Decky Loader provides a way to add community plugins to Steam Deck’s Game Mode. Its official project repository describes the launcher and points to plugin examples. Individual plugins have their own purposes, dependencies, and maintenance status, so a mention here is not a guarantee that a plugin is currently listed, maintained, or compatible with your installed SteamOS version.
Before installing any plugin, check its current Decky store entry or project page, its latest release information, and reports relevant to your SteamOS and Steam client version. SteamOS and client updates can affect plugins, and there is no compatibility matrix established here that can guarantee a particular combination will work. Plugins distributed separately from Decky’s browser may also require a more manual installation process.
Best suited to a cleaner-looking game library
SteamGridDB
Choose SteamGridDB if you want to replace or fill in artwork for games in your library, including non-Steam entries that do not have the presentation you want. It is a library-artwork tool rather than a game launcher or performance tweak. A 2026 editorial roundup and Windows Central’s overview both discuss it as a Decky option, but any download-count claims in roundups are secondary-source figures, not official or independently verified current totals. NerdZap’s 2026 roundup and Windows Central’s overview describe the use case.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)

Best suited to changing the Steam interface
CSS Loader
CSS Loader applies community-created styling to the Steam interface. It is a fit for visual customization, but themes can be affected when the Steam client changes. Check that the plugin and the particular theme are current for your client version before relying on them.
Audio Loader
Audio Loader changes system sounds, making it another personalization choice rather than a functional requirement. Confirm its current Decky listing or project release and compatibility with your SteamOS and Steam client before installing.
Animation Changer
Animation Changer is included among customization options in the 2026 roundup. The material available here does not establish durable current maintenance status, so treat it as a candidate to verify—not a dependable recommendation until you have checked its current project page, availability, and compatibility.

vibrantDeck
vibrantDeck changes display saturation. It may duplicate a control already built into SteamOS: the 2026 roundup says SteamOS 3.5 added a vibrancy slider. Check your installed SteamOS display settings first, then confirm whether the plugin offers a distinct function you actually need.

ProtonDB Badges
ProtonDB Badges surfaces community compatibility information alongside games in the library. Use a badge as a prompt to investigate, not as a guarantee that a particular game will run well on your Deck, SteamOS version, or settings. Reports come from community experiences and may not match your configuration.
HLTB for Deck
HLTB for Deck displays HowLongToBeat completion estimates with games, which can help when choosing a backlog game or deciding what fits a play session. Treat those estimates as averages or user-submitted information, not a prediction of how long your own playthrough will take.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Best suited to deeper system control
PowerTools
PowerTools is aimed at readers who want system settings beyond the ordinary interface. The official Decky repository lists it as an example plugin, but that alone does not establish what a current release changes or which settings are appropriate for a given game or Deck. Read the current project documentation before changing settings; do not assume a setting is a safe performance improvement without evidence for your use case.
Best suited to frame generation—with a separate dependency
Decky LSFG-VK
The 2026 roundup describes Decky LSFG-VK as a frame-generation integration that requires Lossless Scaling on Steam. That dependency means it is not a standalone, no-cost Decky feature. Confirm the current project instructions and Lossless Scaling’s current price and availability before deciding whether the setup suits you. Frame generation should not be treated as a guarantee of better performance or image quality in every game.

NonSteamLaunchers
NonSteamLaunchers is described by the 2026 roundup as a way to install third-party launchers, and as not being in the official Decky store. Because it involves external launchers and a separate installation route, use it only if you specifically need those libraries. Check the project’s current support and installation instructions, and do not mistake an external project for an official Decky or Valve product.
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

| NonSteamLaunchers | Installing third-party game launchers | The 2026 roundup says it is outside the official Decky store; check its separate installation instructions. |
Where TabMaster fits—and why to verify it
TabMaster
TabMaster is discussed in community conversation as a library-organization option, but current primary-source documentation, official listing, and maintenance status are not established here. If library organization is your goal, check the project’s current page and recent compatibility evidence before adding it to your setup.
The candidate list reflects distinct reader needs, not an endorsement that all 11 plugins are equally available or current. For general orientation, the 2026 roundup and Windows Central overview provide editorial examples; the Decky Loader repository is the primary reference for the launcher itself.
