Roku is best for casual, remote-controlled gaming—not for replacing an Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or gaming PC. The 12 titles below are the historically documented candidates from the classic Roku-games list, but Roku’s catalog changes by country, device, and operating-system version. Treat each entry as a game to search for, not a guarantee that it remains available.
Before installing anything, search the exact title in Home > Streaming Store (or Store on some Roku interfaces). If it is not listed, do not use an old channel code or unofficial download. Roku says an app may disappear when its provider removes it, the service changes, or Roku no longer supports it.

Our picks by type of player
- Best for quick solo play: Snake, Dots!, or Tiles.
- Best for children: Tic Tac Toe Free, Checkers Free, Brain Puck, or a simple matching game—provided the current listing is suitable and available.
- Best for two people sharing one remote: Tic Tac Toe, Checkers, Shut the Box!, or Match Four, if the installed version supports pass-and-play.
- Best nostalgia pick: Snake, Solitaire4us, or Checkers Free.
- Best arcade option: Retaliate, if it is still listed and its faster controls feel comfortable with your remote.
- Best adult-only option: Video Poker. Its historical description uses fictional credits, so it is simulated gambling rather than real-money gambling. Keep it separate from children’s recommendations.
What each game offers
1. Retaliate
Retaliate is a scrolling shooter built around a distinctive limitation: the player begins without ammunition and must take ammunition from enemies. That makes it the most action-oriented choice in the group. It may appeal to arcade fans, but a Roku remote is less precise than a game controller, so expect a slower, less responsive experience than on a console.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
2. Snake
This is the familiar snake game: collect items, grow, and avoid collisions. Its simple directional controls and short rounds make it one of the best fits for a standard Roku remote and a couch-distance television. Search for the exact title because similarly named apps may not be the same game.
3. Video Poker
The historical version included Jacks or Better, Double Bonus Poker, Deuces Wild, Joker Poker, and Double Joker Poker, using virtual credits. It should be described as a simulated casino-style game, not real-money gambling. Check the current listing for advertising, purchases, age guidance, and whether it still uses fictional currency.
4. Solitaire4us
Solitaire4us offered classic solitaire with one-card and three-card draw options. Directional-button controls suit the large screen, especially for quiet solo play. Do not assume that an old multiplayer label means online play, two-player play, or pass-and-play; confirm the mode in the current app.
5. Candy Bear Free
This historically described platform game involves candies, bunnies, platforms, levels, and bonus content. It is the most obviously child-oriented candidate, but the old level counts and feature claims should not be treated as current specifications. Fast platform controls may also be awkward with a Roku remote.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
6. Brain Puck
Brain Puck presents sequences of tones or directional inputs for the player to repeat. It works well as a short, low-complexity challenge. Describe its mechanics rather than claiming that it improves memory, learning, or intelligence; the historical source does not provide evidence for those benefits.
7. Dots!
Dots! historically offered matching or connecting gameplay involving same-colored spheres, with Skill and Time modes. The straightforward input makes it a natural big-screen puzzle candidate. Confirm the current rules and modes before relying on them, since old descriptions may no longer match the listing.
8. Tic Tac Toe Free
This version of tic-tac-toe was described as offering computer opponents along with selectable shapes, colors, and backgrounds. It is easy for children and families to understand. The old description does not reliably establish local two-player support, so treat it as versus-computer unless the current app explicitly offers another mode.

9. Shut the Box!
Shut the Box! is a dice-based game in which players remove numbered tiles and try to finish with a low score. Its turn-based design is a better match for a Roku remote than a fast action game. Verify whether the installed version supports multiple local players or only solo play.
Rank #3
- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight.
10. Match Four Free
Match Four Free is a connect-four-style strategy game with historically listed easy and hard computer modes. It should not be presented as an official Hasbro or Connect Four product. It is a good candidate for family play if the current version offers pass-and-play or shared-screen turns.
11. Tiles
Tiles is an action-puzzle game with multiple levels and a level-creation feature in the historical description. Those features could provide more replay value than a one-mode game, but words such as “endless” or “infinite” should not be repeated unless the current listing confirms them.
12. Checkers Free
Checkers Free historically included Easy, Medium, and Surprise Me modes, with moves selected through directional buttons. It is readable and naturally suited to a television. The listed difficulty modes appear to refer to computer opponents; confirm whether the current app also supports local two-player play.

For this guide, “free” should mean free to install and playable without a recurring subscription or mandatory purchase. That does not necessarily mean ad-free. A listing may include advertisements, optional upgrades, paid content, or an account requirement.

Before installing, check the app page for:
- Free versus paid status.
- In-app purchases or subscription language.
- Advertising disclosures.
- Required sign-in or payment information.
- Supported Roku TV and player models.
- Whether the game requires a second remote, phone, or other accessory.
Apps inside a paid streaming service are not free Roku games merely because the Roku platform can launch them. Likewise, a free trial is not the same as permanently free basic play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to find and install a Roku game
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Streaming Store or Store.
- Search the exact game title.
- Open the listing and check its price, developer, requirements, purchases, and ratings.
- Select Add app or the equivalent installation command.
- Launch the game and test the first playable screen, the Back button, and every required control.
You can also use the official Roku mobile app on iOS or Android. Roku says the app can browse the Store, add or remove apps, launch installed apps, and control a Roku TV or player. It supports Roku devices running Roku OS 6.2 or later, although features vary. Using the phone as a remote does not automatically make it a full game controller; each game must support phone-based controls separately.
When a game is missing
If an old recommendation does not appear, check the spelling and search the Store’s featured, recommended, or top-free categories. The title may have been removed, renamed, restricted in your country, or discontinued for your Roku model. Roku’s missing-app guidance says an app absent from the Streaming Store may no longer be available on Roku.
Do not sideload unofficial packages, rely on unverified channel codes, or download APKs. Those routes can be unsafe and do not solve compatibility or support problems. If your device shows a different catalog from the one used by an article, trust the listing on your own Roku device.

Is Roku good enough for gaming?
For turn-based board games, cards, puzzles, and simple arcade titles, Roku can be a convenient way to use the big screen without buying a console. The standard remote is usually adequate for directional movement, selection, and menu navigation.
Roku becomes a poor fit for precise aiming, racing, platforming, rapid action, or serious multiplayer. It is primarily a streaming platform, and higher video output—such as 4K or HDR—does not guarantee better game selection, lower latency, or controller support. If gaming is the main goal, a console, PC, or supported cloud-gaming setup with a proper controller is the better choice.
A Roku TV has Roku software built in. A Roku streaming stick or player adds Roku to a compatible HDMI television. The Roku mobile app is only a remote and app-management tool; it is not a separate way to play Roku-only games without a Roku device.
Bottom line
Start with Snake, Dots!, Tiles, Tic Tac Toe, Checkers, or another turn-based title if it appears in your current Streaming Store. The historical 12-game list is useful for ideas, but it is too old to treat as a guaranteed 2026 catalog. Search first, inspect the app’s free-status and control requirements, and choose Roku for casual couch gaming—not console-style play.
