The easiest way to play your PS5 on a Windows PC or Mac is Sony’s PS Remote Play app. Use a capture card instead if you want to record or stream gameplay. A PS5 HDMI cable works directly with a computer only when that computer has a genuine HDMI input—something most laptops and desktop PCs do not have.
- Play on your computer: Use PS Remote Play.
- Record or stream: Use a capture card with OBS or similar software.
- Connect with HDMI: Check for HDMI input; an ordinary HDMI output will not accept the PS5 signal.
The easiest method: PS Remote Play
Remote Play shows and controls the PS5 through an app on your computer. The game continues running on the PS5; it is not converted into a native PC version.

What you need
- A PS5 with updated system software and internet access.
- The same PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and computer.
- A DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 controller. Sony’s PC and Mac setup recommends connecting it with a USB cable.
- At least 5 Mbps upload and download. Sony recommends 15 Mbps in both directions for better performance, although that does not guarantee low latency.
- A microphone if you want to use voice chat.
Sony currently lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 for PCs, along with a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or newer, 2GB of RAM, 100MB of storage, a 1024×768-or-higher display, a sound card and a USB port. For Mac, Sony lists macOS Big Sur through macOS Tahoe, 2GB of RAM and 40MB of storage. These requirements can change, so check Sony’s current requirements page before installing.

How to connect a PS5 to a computer with HDMI
The usual cable layout—PS5 HDMI OUT → computer HDMI port—does not normally work. The PS5 sends video through an HDMI output, and the HDMI port on most laptops and desktop PCs is also an output for sending the computer’s picture to another display.
Check the computer manufacturer’s specifications for the exact words HDMI input. Do not assume a port accepts video merely because it is labelled HDMI. If the computer has no HDMI input, use Remote Play or a capture card. A monitor or TV with an HDMI input can also display the PS5 directly, but that does not connect the console to the computer.

How to use a capture card
A capture card is the better option for recording PS5 gameplay, streaming to Twitch or YouTube, feeding the console into OBS, or using a computer window to monitor the signal. Many external capture cards also provide HDMI passthrough, allowing you to play on a TV or monitor while the computer records the feed.

- Connect the PS5 directly to a TV or monitor first and confirm that it works.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > HDMI and turn off Enable HDCP for supported gameplay capture.
- Connect the PS5 HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture card’s HDMI output to a TV or monitor if you want passthrough.
- Connect the capture card to the computer with its USB cable.
- Open OBS, Elgato’s software or another supported application and add the capture card as a video-capture source.
For example, Elgato’s HD60 X setup uses HDMI input for the PS5 signal, HDMI output for passthrough and USB for the computer. Its product page lists up to 4K60 HDR10 passthrough and up to 1080p60 capture, subject to the device, computer, resolution, refresh rate and HDR settings. Availability and replacement status should be checked because product listings can change. Higher-resolution options such as Elgato’s 4K X require the display, PS5 settings and computer USB connection to support the intended workflow.

HDCP and black screens
Elgato says HDCP-protected HDMI signals cannot be displayed or recorded by its capture devices, and HDCP is enabled by default on PS5. Turning it off is relevant to supported gameplay capture—not a universal fix. Protected streaming services and disc content may still show no image. See the manufacturer’s HDCP guidance.
Playing from a capture-card preview window can introduce delay. For responsive play, use HDMI passthrough to a TV or monitor and use the computer for recording, streaming and monitoring. Do not assume every preview or passthrough setup has the same latency.

| Use DualSense with PC games | USB or supported Bluetooth | Features vary by game, OS and firmware |
Fix common problems
PS5 is not found in Remote Play
- Confirm Enable Remote Play is on.
- Check that the PS5 and computer are online and use the same PlayStation account.
- Update the console, controller and app.
- For Rest Mode, enable both network options under Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Try manual pairing with Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device.
- Reinstall PS Remote Play if necessary.
Remote Play is laggy or blurry
Use Ethernet where practical, prefer 5GHz Wi-Fi over congested 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, move closer to the router, pause downloads and reduce the app’s video quality. Test both devices on the same local network before diagnosing an away-from-home connection. Sony lists 5 Mbps in both directions as the minimum and 15 Mbps as recommended for better performance, but latency also depends on Wi-Fi interference, distance, routing, NAT and congestion. Sony’s connection troubleshooting guide notes that NAT Type 3 can prevent Remote Play and identifies UDP port 8572. Router port-forwarding steps differ by router and ISP, so consult their documentation after basic checks.

Reconnect the USB cable, try another USB port and use a data-capable cable rather than a charge-only cable. Reset the controller, update its firmware and restart both the controller and computer. Bluetooth can work in some configurations, but USB is the least ambiguous option and controller features vary across Windows, macOS, firmware and games.

Remote Play shows a blank or black screen
Restart the computer, reinstall the app, update graphics drivers and check whether firewall or security software is blocking PS Remote Play. Test the PS5 on a TV or monitor to separate a console or HDMI fault from a computer-side Remote Play problem. On Windows, Sony’s advanced troubleshooting also includes deleting the PS Remote Play folder in local AppData and reinstalling the latest supported x86 Microsoft Visual C++ package.
The capture card shows no signal
- Confirm HDCP is disabled for supported gameplay capture.
- Make sure the PS5 goes to HDMI IN, not HDMI OUT.
- Make sure the TV or monitor goes to HDMI OUT.
- Connect the capture card directly to a suitable USB port.
- Select the capture card as the video source in OBS or other software.
- Check that the selected resolution and refresh rate are supported.
- Try different HDMI cables and confirm the PS5 works directly on a display.
- Check that the content is not HDCP-protected.
Important Remote Play limits
Remote Play is not a universal mirror of every PS5 screen. Sony says it cannot be used in certain situations, including while the PS5 is broadcasting or streaming, when launching a game that does not support Remote Play, or when launching a media app or disc player. Remote Play away from home is possible only when the console is configured correctly and both ends have a suitable internet connection, account access and compatible network conditions.
