OBS Studio is the best overall game recorder for full-length PC gameplay, streaming, facecam videos, and separate audio tracks. If you only want instant clips, NVIDIA ShadowPlay in the NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin, Xbox Game Bar, or Medal is easier. On mobile, start with your phone’s built-in recorder: Apple’s Screen Recording is the best iPhone/iPad option, while Android users should check the native recorder before installing AZ Screen Recorder, Mobizen, or another app.
The right choice depends on your GPU or phone, whether you need full sessions or replay clips, audio and microphone controls, editing, and restrictions such as watermarks, time limits, permissions, or subscriptions.

Recording versus instant replay
These tools do not all solve the same problem:
- Manual recording starts when you press Record and continues until you stop it. This is the right mode for YouTube sessions, tutorials, and complete matches.
- Instant Replay or a replay buffer continuously retains a short rolling section and saves it only when you press a hotkey. It is ideal for unexpected moments, but it still uses memory and can affect performance.
- Automatic highlights attempt to detect events such as kills, wins, or aces and save clips without a manual hotkey. Detection depends on the game and software.
1. OBS Studio — best overall
OBS Studio is the strongest general-purpose choice for serious gameplay recording. It is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The official site currently lists version 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026.
OBS supports game, window, and display capture; webcams; capture cards; browser sources; scenes; hotkeys; audio filters; streaming; and multiple audio tracks. It is the best fit for full-length gameplay, Let’s Plays, tutorials, and recording while streaming.
#1 Best Overall
- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Its disadvantage is configuration. Poor settings can cause dropped frames, encoder overload, wrong audio devices, or unnecessarily large files. OBS Game Capture is intended for high-performance 3D game capture on Windows, but some games, anti-cheat systems, emulators, rendering modes, or hybrid-GPU laptops may require another source.
Basic OBS setup
- Download OBS from the official site and run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Create a scene, then choose Sources → Game Capture.
- Add Audio Input Capture if your microphone is not already available.
- Check that desktop audio and microphone meters move in the Audio Mixer.
- Open Settings → Output and choose the recording folder, format, encoder, and quality.
- Record for two to five minutes before starting an important session. Check video, audio sync, file size, and game performance.
OBS’s official quick-start guide recommends testing before an important recording. OBS is the best overall recorder, but it is not the best choice if all you want is the last 30 seconds of gameplay.
2. NVIDIA ShadowPlay in the NVIDIA App — best for GeForce users
NVIDIA now presents ShadowPlay recording through the NVIDIA App. It offers manual recording, Instant Replay, and automatic Highlights on supported systems. NVIDIA says maximum capture capabilities can reach 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps depending on hardware and configuration, while RTX 40-series GPUs support AV1 recording.
For compatible GeForce systems, this is the easiest “press a key and save the moment” option. Enable the in-game overlay, turn on recording or Instant Replay, select the replay duration, resolution, frame rate, codec, microphone, and save location, then use the assigned hotkey.
ShadowPlay has fewer scenes, sources, and audio-routing controls than OBS. High-resolution recording also consumes considerable storage. Actual resolution, codec, HDR, and frame-rate availability depends on the GPU, driver, game, and settings.
3. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition — best for Radeon users
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is the natural ShadowPlay alternative for Radeon owners. Its recording tools provide GPU-native capture and replay features without requiring a full OBS configuration.
It is a good fit for AMD users who want clips, Instant Replay, or straightforward manual recording. Availability of codecs, controls, and features varies by Adrenalin release, GPU family, laptop configuration, and hybrid-graphics setup. It is not a universal zero-performance-impact solution: recording still uses hardware resources, memory bandwidth, storage bandwidth, and thermal headroom.
Use Adrenalin when your priority is low-friction Radeon recording. Choose OBS when you need multiple scenes, capture cards, advanced audio routing, or a long-form production workflow.
4. Xbox Game Bar — best built-in Windows recorder
Xbox Game Bar is the most convenient Windows option because it is already integrated into Windows 10 and 11. Press Win + G to open the overlay and use the Capture widget. The common start/stop shortcut is Win + Alt + R.
Game Bar is suitable for quick clips and casual recordings, but it is much less configurable than OBS. It may not capture every game, desktop view, protected video, or elevated application consistently. Check its microphone and audio settings before recording something important, and do not treat it as a complete replacement for scenes, separate audio tracks, or capture-card workflows.

5. Medal — best for automatic clips and sharing
Medal is designed around replay capture, automatic highlights, simple editing, and sharing. Its official PC coverage describes configurable replay durations from 15 seconds to 10 minutes, free recording without watermarks, and automatic clipping across more than 100 games. These capabilities can change by product version, game, and plan.
Medal is excellent for competitive highlights and social clips. It supports recording through NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or CPU-based methods. It is less suitable as the default tool for a two-hour Let’s Play, where OBS provides more control over scenes, storage, audio tracks, and production.
Consider cloud, social, AI, and account features separately from local recording quality. Automatic event detection will not work equally well for every game.
6. Bandicam — best straightforward paid Windows recorder
Bandicam records games, screens, webcams, and external devices. Its game mode supports DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan applications, and the company describes hardware acceleration for NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel.
Bandicam suits Windows users who want a conventional interface with game capture, webcam, microphone, hardware encoding, and basic editing without building an OBS scene collection. The free or trial edition has restrictions, including watermark or recording-limit rules that should be checked on the current official purchase page. Do not assume a third-party price report remains current.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is a credible paid alternative when OBS feels excessive, but it is primarily a Windows product and is not the right choice for Mac, Linux, iPhone, or Android recording.
7. Streamlabs Desktop — best for integrated streaming tools
Streamlabs Desktop is aimed at streamers who want scenes, alerts, widgets, layouts, and creator integrations in one application. It can record as well as stream and is useful for beginners who want guided broadcast features.
The trade-off is additional bundled functionality, resource use, account requirements, and possible premium prompts. Streamlabs should not automatically be described as better than OBS. Choose it when its integrated streaming tools solve a specific problem; choose OBS for a leaner, more open-ended recording setup.
8. Android system screen recorder — best when built in
Always check Android’s built-in recorder before installing an app. Open Quick Settings and look for Screen recorder or Screen recording. Depending on the phone, you may be able to choose no sound, media sounds, or media sounds plus microphone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStop from the notification or floating control, then find the file in Gallery, Photos, or the phone’s screen-recordings folder. Menu names and audio behavior differ across Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, and other devices. The recorder may instead be inside Game Launcher or Game Booster.

Samsung documents a recorder on supported Galaxy devices and notes that it does not record phone calls, VoIP calls, or video calls. Do not assume every Samsung phone or Android device has identical controls.
9. AZ Screen Recorder — best flexible Android fallback
AZ Screen Recorder offers Android gameplay capture, one-tap recording, facecam, editing, and internal-audio support primarily on Android 10 and later according to its official site.
It is useful when a phone lacks a satisfactory native recorder or when you need facecam and basic editing. Internal audio is not guaranteed across all phones, Android versions, games, or apps. Permissions, overlays, ads, subscriptions, and device-specific restrictions also matter. Download it through the official Google Play listing or verified vendor source rather than an untrusted APK mirror.

Mobizen supports gameplay recording, game sound and voice, facecam, editing, Full HD recording, and—in the listed product description—up to 60 fps.
Its strengths are a floating control, facecam, and straightforward editing. The Google Play listing identifies permissions involving storage, camera, microphone, and drawing over other apps. Review those permissions before installation, and distinguish the general Mobizen app from Samsung-specific versions. Ads, device compatibility, and purchase terms can change.
11. XRecorder — simple Android alternative
XRecorder can be considered when you want basic Android recording and editing, but verify the exact official Google Play listing and developer before installing. Apps with similar names may not be from the same vendor.
Check the current Android compatibility, internal-audio behavior, resolution and frame-rate limits, watermark policy, ads, subscriptions, and privacy disclosures. Treat it as a secondary recommendation rather than a universal Android winner.

12. Apple Screen Recording — best for iPhone and iPad
Apple’s built-in Screen Recording is the default choice for iPhone and iPad gameplay because it requires no third-party recorder.
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner.
- Tap the gray Screen Recording button and wait through the three-second countdown.
- Stop by tapping the recording indicator at the top and choosing Stop, or open Control Center and tap the red recording button.
- Find the video in Photos.
For microphone commentary, press and hold the Screen Recording button in Control Center and turn Microphone on before starting. Apple warns that some apps may restrict audio or video recording and that screen recording cannot be used simultaneously with screen mirroring. Editing is basic, so use Photos or a separate editor afterward when necessary.

Safe beginner settings
- Resolution: Match the game or the output you intend to publish.
- Frame rate: Use 60 fps for fast gameplay if the system can sustain it; use 30 fps to reduce storage and hardware demands.
- Codec: H.264 is the safest compatibility choice. HEVC or AV1 can reduce file sizes or improve quality, but your editor and destination must support them.
- Quality: Prefer a quality-based mode where available instead of blindly selecting an enormous bitrate.
- Audio: Record game audio and microphone commentary to separate tracks when possible.
- Storage: Use a fast local SSD with plenty of free space.
- Testing: Record two to five minutes, then inspect sync, dropped frames, file size, and game performance.
How much storage does gameplay recording use?
File size depends on codec, quality, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, audio, and container overhead. A useful planning approximation is:

Fix common recording problems
Black screen
- Try borderless-windowed mode.
- Run the game and recorder with compatible privilege levels.
- Change OBS from Game Capture to Window Capture.
- Use Display Capture as a last resort; it may capture notifications and use more resources.
- Disable conflicting overlays.
- If the issue began after a driver update, update or roll back the graphics driver.
- On laptops, check that the game and recorder are using compatible GPUs.
Anti-cheat systems, protected content, HDR, fullscreen modes, hybrid graphics, and unusual rendering paths can all affect capture. Test another game to determine whether the problem is game-specific.
Missing game audio
- Confirm the recorder is capturing the correct desktop or application output.
- Check Windows, OBS, or phone microphone and audio permissions.
- Verify the selected output device and volume meters.
- Watch for Bluetooth headsets switching into a low-quality microphone profile.
- Check Android’s internal-audio restrictions and iOS app restrictions.
- Disable conflicting exclusive-mode or virtual-audio drivers.
- Test with and without a capture card or external audio device.
Missing microphone commentary
Select the correct input device, confirm its meter moves, and check that the app has microphone permission. In OBS, devices can be selected through Settings → Audio. Separate microphone and game tracks are preferable for editing because you can reduce commentary or game volume later without damaging the other source.
Choppy video or dropped frames
Lower resolution, frame rate, or quality; switch to a supported hardware encoder; close unnecessary overlays; record to a local SSD; and leave GPU headroom. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work, but no recorder is universally “zero lag.” The result depends on game load, encoder, codec, storage speed, thermals, and whether you are streaming simultaneously.
Recommended Free Tools
Phone overheating
Lower resolution or frame rate, remove a thick case, stop unnecessary background apps, avoid recording while charging if the phone becomes hot, and use shorter sessions. If the game starts throttling, a lower-quality recording is preferable to a stuttering video and unstable phone.
Bottom line
Choose OBS Studio for serious PC recording, streaming, separate audio, and long-form videos. Choose ShadowPlay for NVIDIA instant clips, Adrenalin for Radeon systems, Game Bar for quick Windows captures, and Medal for highlight sharing. On iPhone and iPad, use Apple’s built-in recorder. On Android, try the native recorder first, then use a reputable third-party app only when it provides a feature your phone lacks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I record gameplay without a capture card?
Yes. OBS, ShadowPlay, AMD Adrenalin, Xbox Game Bar, Medal, and built-in mobile recorders can capture gameplay directly. A capture card is mainly needed when recording another device, such as a console, or when separating capture from the gaming PC.
Do game recorders work with emulators?
Often, but not always. If Game Capture fails, try Window Capture or Display Capture. Emulator rendering modes, elevated privileges, overlays, and graphics APIs can affect compatibility.
