When Windows reports that maxkernl.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the PaperPort or scanner software that originally installed it.
The file is identified as PaperPort File & Rendering and is associated with Visioneer, Inc. Older PaperPort installations commonly placed it inside the program’s own directory, often beneath C:Program Files (x86), rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random file site or copy one into System32. That may introduce malware, an incompatible build, or the wrong architecture while leaving the damaged PaperPort installation unresolved.

PaperPort uses maxkernl.dll for file and rendering functions. Older ScanSoft and Nuance PaperPort releases, Visioneer scanner bundles, and some original-equipment scanner packages may include it.

You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because maxkernl.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting maxkernl.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading maxkernl.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because maxkernl.dll was not found.”
- “maxkernl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “This application failed to start because Maxkernl.dll was not found.”
- “The file Maxkernl.dll is missing or corrupted.”
The wording does not always mean the file itself is absent. Windows can show “specified module could not be found” when maxkernl.dll exists but one of its dependent files is missing, damaged, or incompatible.
The problem usually follows one of these events:
- PaperPort or a scanner bundle was only partially uninstalled.
- A scanner driver or PaperPort version was replaced with an incompatible release.
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the file.
- The PaperPort directory was moved or deleted.
- A disk cleanup or storage problem damaged application files.
- An old 32-bit PaperPort installation is being used on a newer Windows system.
The most likely cause is a damaged or incomplete PaperPort installation.
Fix 1: Repair PaperPort from Control Panel
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes, plus a restart.
Repair is the preferred first step because it restores missing program files without immediately removing your PaperPort configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
- Save your work and close PaperPort.
- Back up important PaperPort documents, especially legacy
.maxfiles, to another folder or external drive. - Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter to open Programs and Features.
- Find an entry named PaperPort, Nuance PaperPort, Kofax PaperPort, or a scanner package that included PaperPort.
- Select the entry and choose Change.
- Select Repair if the installer offers that option.
- Follow the prompts until the repair completes.
- Restart Windows.
- Start PaperPort again.
If the repair succeeds, PaperPort should open without the maxkernl.dll message. Test the operation that previously failed, such as opening a document or importing a scan.
If Repair is not available
Some older installers provide only Modify, Uninstall, or a setup wizard. Do not copy a DLL into the application folder as a substitute for Repair.
Instead:
- Open Programs and Features again.
- Identify every related PaperPort entry and any scanner software installed with it.
- Keep your PaperPort documents backed up.
- Uninstall the complete PaperPort package rather than removing only one component.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall PaperPort from the original disc, downloaded installer, or licensed software delivery account.
- Restart again before testing the program.
Removing only the scanner driver or only one PaperPort component can leave the installation in a broken state. For a bundled scanner installation, reinstall the scanner driver and PaperPort together when the installer provides both choices.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete scanner software bundle
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes.
If PaperPort came with a Visioneer scanner or another scanner package, the missing file may indicate that only part of the bundle is installed. The scanner driver alone may not restore PaperPort’s rendering libraries.
- Disconnect the scanner’s USB cable if the manufacturer’s installer instructs you to do so.
- Back up PaperPort documents.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Remove the scanner software and its bundled PaperPort entry.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the scanner manufacturer’s original media or your legitimate PaperPort software source.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose the complete installation, including both the scanner driver and PaperPort component.
- Follow the scanner connection instructions.
- Restart Windows after setup finishes.
- Open PaperPort and test scanning and document rendering.
Do not mix a maxkernl.dll file from one PaperPort release with executables from another release. PaperPort components are intended to work as a matched installation.

If you no longer have the original media, access to an older PaperPort installer may depend on your purchase, account, license, or support entitlement. Use the official software source associated with your scanner or PaperPort ownership rather than a standalone DLL repository.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Security software may quarantine a legitimate application file, but the filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine. A malicious file can use the same name.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
maxkernl.dll, PaperPort, or the scanner software. - Check the file path shown in the event.
- If the file was located inside the legitimate PaperPort installation directory, record the detection details before taking action.
- Do not restore the file if it was found in
System32,SysWOW64, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder. - If you confirm that the detection concerns your legitimate installation, use the security product’s documented restore or allow action.
- Immediately run a full malware scan.
- Repair or reinstall PaperPort even if the file is restored.
If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or history screen instead. If the security product repeatedly removes the file, do not keep downloading replacements. The PaperPort installer should be repaired or replaced, and the detection should be investigated.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 4: Check the PaperPort installation path and architecture
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
A historical maxkernl.dll build is associated with older 32-bit PaperPort software. That does not mean every PaperPort version uses the same file location or that every release has identical architecture.
Check the program directory without moving or replacing files:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Browse to the PaperPort installation folder.
- Common historical locations include:
text
C:Program Files (x86)ScanSoftPaperPort
- Also check the PaperPort folder under
C:Program Filesif the product was installed there. - Search within the PaperPort directory for
maxkernl.dll. - If it exists, right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
- Note its full path, publisher information, and any signature status.
- Do not copy it to another directory.
A file in the correct PaperPort folder can still be corrupt or incompatible. A file with no connection to PaperPort should not automatically be trusted because its name matches the error.
If the calling program is 32-bit, installing only 64-bit supporting software will not make a 32-bit application work. Use the PaperPort installer’s required components and architecture rather than guessing from the Windows edition.

Fix 5: Repair a missing dependency, not maxkernl.dll itself
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes.
A “specified module could not be found” message can mean that a dependency required by maxkernl.dll is missing. Do not automatically install Visual C++ Redistributables as the answer. maxkernl.dll is identified as a PaperPort library, not as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file.

- One-touch scanning (2) — scan in fewer steps with easy-to-use buttons (2)
- Restore color to faded photos — with one click, Easy Photo Fix technology makes it simple
- Scan books and photo albums — high-rise, removable lid
First, run the PaperPort Repair option or reinstall the complete package. If the PaperPort installer explicitly requests a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable:
- Record the architecture requested by the installer.
- Download the package only from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
- Match the package to the application architecture.
- Install it.
- Restart Windows.
- Run PaperPort again.
Older runtime packages can remain installed alongside newer ones. Do not remove existing runtime packages merely because PaperPort is old.
If the installer does not request a runtime, installing several unrelated Redistributables is unlikely to repair the application. A dependency analysis or the original installer is more useful than guessing.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the scanner driver
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A scanner package can install PaperPort and the scanner driver as a matched set. A damaged or incompatible driver installation may prevent the application bundle from starting correctly.
Check the device in Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Find the scanner.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- If the device has a warning icon, select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the scanner driver from the manufacturer’s official package.
- Reconnect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart and test PaperPort.
Do not uninstall the scanner driver alone if the scanner installer also supplied PaperPort and related components. In that case, reinstall the complete bundle.
If manually identifying the correct scanner driver means hunting through old model pages and comparing versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. PaperPort itself still needs to be repaired or reinstalled because the application package remains the definitive source for maxkernl.dll.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, sometimes longer.
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a missing third-party PaperPort DLL, so use them when other Windows problems are present too, such as damaged system features, repeated application failures, or broader corruption.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test PaperPort.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and review the result before returning to PaperPort Repair.
SFC will not normally restore maxkernl.dll because it is not a protected Windows system file.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting feel like guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show reported repair issues, while its repair function requires the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling PaperPort remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 8: Use Windows Features only for a specific installer requirement
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Some older applications require Windows components such as .NET Framework 3.5. Do not enable Windows Features merely because maxkernl.dll is missing. Enable a feature only if the PaperPort installer, an error message, or the application documentation specifically identifies it.

- Review the available features.
- Select only the feature explicitly required by the PaperPort installer.
- Click OK.
- Allow Windows to download or apply the component.
- Restart if prompted.
- Run PaperPort Repair or reinstall the application.
Enabling unrelated legacy features does not replace the PaperPort library and can complicate later troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Test for disk, profile, or system-change damage
Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours, depending on the checks.
If Repair and reinstall both fail, determine whether the problem is limited to PaperPort.
- Test another PaperPort document.
- Confirm whether other applications also fail to start.
- Check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Review Windows Logs → Application around the failure time.
- Note the calling executable and any named dependent DLL.
- Test from another Windows user profile if available.
- Check the drive for broader errors using the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic tools or Windows’ drive properties.
- Consider System Restore only if the failure clearly began after a system change and a suitable restore point exists.
System Restore is not a guaranteed repair for a missing PaperPort file. Do not use it instead of backing up PaperPort documents or reinstalling the application.
Why downloading maxkernl.dll is unsafe
A standalone DLL download is the wrong default for this error.
A downloaded file may be:
- Modified or malicious.
- From a different PaperPort release.
- Built for a different application architecture.
- Missing companion files.
- Unsigned or signed by an unexpected publisher.
- Incompatible with the installed PaperPort executable.
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts. It also does not recreate installer records, permissions, registry settings, companion libraries, or scanner integration.
maxkernl.dll is generally a private PaperPort application file, so it does not normally belong in a Windows system directory. Restore it through PaperPort Repair or the complete official installer instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this error
Do not run this as a general repair:
regsvr32 maxkernl.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application library may not expose those functions. Running the command does not install missing dependencies or restore a damaged PaperPort package.

Likely causes and the corresponding fix
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Damaged PaperPort installation | Run Repair, then reinstall the complete package if needed |
| Scanner bundle installed incompletely | Reinstall the scanner driver and bundled PaperPort software |
| Incompatible PaperPort generation | Use the version supplied with the scanner or tied to the license |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check history, scan the system, then repair or reinstall |
| Missing dependency | Use the original installer and match any requested runtime architecture |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM followed by SFC |
| Deleted or moved PaperPort directory | Restore the application through its installer |
| Disk or profile damage | Check Event Viewer, storage health, and another user profile |
What to collect if the problem remains
Before contacting the scanner manufacturer or PaperPort support, record:
- The complete error text.
- The executable that displays the error.
- The full path where Windows expects
maxkernl.dll. - The PaperPort product name and version, if shown.
- The Windows 10 or Windows 11 version.
- The scanner model.
- The result of PaperPort Repair.
- The antivirus quarantine entry, if any.
- The file’s Properties and Digital Signatures information.
- Recent uninstallations, driver changes, updates, or disk problems.
- Whether the file exists in the original PaperPort folder.
This information distinguishes a missing PaperPort file from a missing dependency or an architecture mismatch.
FAQ
Is maxkernl.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a legacy third-party PaperPort file described as PaperPort File & Rendering. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does maxkernl.dll belong to Visual C++?
No. The file itself is identified as a PaperPort library. A PaperPort release could still require a separate runtime dependency, but Visual C++ should not be installed as an automatic answer without evidence from the installer or dependency diagnosis.
Can I copy maxkernl.dll into System32?
No. That can cause conflicts and does not repair PaperPort. Restore the file through PaperPort Repair or the complete scanner and PaperPort installer.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed for registration and does not restore ordinary application libraries or their dependencies.
Will SFC restore maxkernl.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while maxkernl.dll belongs to PaperPort. Run SFC only when there is broader evidence of Windows corruption.

What if the file is found in System32?
Do not assume it is genuine. Check its path, publisher, digital signature, and relationship to an installed PaperPort package. A matching filename alone is not proof of authenticity.
What if I no longer use PaperPort?
Uninstall PaperPort and its obsolete scanner components instead of replacing the DLL. Back up PaperPort documents first, then remove the program through Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
Is PaperPort still available?
Access to older or current PaperPort software may depend on the original purchase, license, account, or support entitlement. Use the official software source associated with your product, not an unverified DLL download.
