What a Set Piece Coach does in FM24
FM24 introduced the specialised Set Piece Coach role and gave every coach a Set Pieces attribute. Sports Interactive describes the attribute as indicating a coach’s ability to train the tactical aspects of set pieces. A coach profile can also show preferences, including delivery style and defensive setup. Those preferences help shape starting routines, but the manager can edit the routines or delegate set-piece responsibilities to the specialist.

The creator assigns players to set-piece jobs using their attributes rather than simply giving assignments based on their tactical position. For corners, example role categories include Aerial Threat, Box Threat, Recovery Defender and Creators. Role rankings can change when you alter the team selection, formation or substitutions. If one player ranks first for more than one role, a priority list helps resolve the overlap. Training contributes to Set Piece Familiarity.
Set-piece choices cover attacking and defensive routines, including zonal, hybrid or man marking; how ambitiously to counter; targeting the near post, far post or centre; delivery swing; corner and free-kick routines; throw-in approach; and penalty takers. How to choose the right coach for your save
Compare the key attributes first
Start with Set-Piece Coaching and Tactical Knowledge. Passion4FM also recommends considering Determination, Motivation and Level of Discipline. Attacking and Defending coaching attributes may be relevant when you are assessing a coach’s suitability for attacking or defensive routines. Attribute values matter more than a name’s place on someone else’s list when comparing candidates in your save.
Match preferences to your squad and plan
Compare a candidate’s preferences—such as delivery type, target and defensive setup—with your intended approach and the players available. For example, the creator’s role rankings depend on the attributes of your squad members who could fill aerial, box-threat, recovery or creator jobs. You can adjust the resulting routines, so preferences are a starting point rather than a restriction.

Check practical constraints in-game
Availability, wage demands and recruitment rules depend on the save and database update. Search for staff in-game and assess candidates against your club’s budget and division requirements before deciding. A real-world club or wage listed in a guide snapshot should not be treated as proof that the coach has the same status in your save.

The list is a useful place to start scouting, but the cited guides do not establish that hiring any particular coach produces a specific number of extra goals, a percentage improvement or a guaranteed league advantage. Their staff listings are guide snapshots, not independently measured outcomes. The best choice for your club depends on the candidate’s in-save attributes, preferences, availability and fit with your squad and approach.
