Pokémon’s Pokédex can turn a cute balloon, a stuffed toy, or a friendly hug into a threat. These 12 entries stand out for their stories of abduction, death, pain, and stolen identity. “Scariest” is subjective, and Pokédex text can change between games, so each example below is tied to the version named in its source.
What makes a Pokédex entry scary?
This list weighs the consequences described in each entry—such as death, abduction, bodily harm, or loss of identity—alongside the contrast between a Pokémon’s appearance and its behavior. It is an editorial selection, not an official or measured ranking. GameSpot also notes that entries for the same Pokémon can differ between games, so a version-specific description should not be treated as a single canonical account. GameSpot’s discussion of disturbing Pokédex entries provides context for those differences.
12 Pokémon with unsettling Pokédex entries
1. Gengar: a threat that gets closer
In the Pokémon Sun and Moon entries reproduced by Game Informer, an approaching Gengar is framed as an inescapable danger. The fear comes from the sense of being stalked: once it is near, escape may not be an option.
2. Houndoom: burns that never stop hurting
The Pokémon Gold entry reproduced by Game Informer says that burns from Houndoom’s flames cause unending pain. Fire is frightening enough, but the entry’s disturbing detail is the lasting suffering it describes.

3. Banette: a discarded toy with a grudge
In the Pokémon Ultra Sun excerpt reproduced by Game Informer, Banette is a discarded stuffed toy possessed and seeking revenge on the person who threw it away. The official Banette Pokédex page describes a related but distinct idea: a puppet turned into a Pokémon by hatred. The two descriptions share a theme of resentment, but they are not the same wording or source.
4. Drifloon: a balloon that lures children away
Pokémon Sun gives Drifloon one of the most alarming contrasts between design and lore. As quoted by Game Informer, the entry says: “Stories go that it grabs the hands of small children and drags them away to the afterlife.” The same excerpt says Drifloon dislikes heavy children—a macabre detail attached to a Pokémon that resembles a balloon.

5. Froslass: freezing victims as decorations
The Pokémon Sun excerpt reproduced by Game Informer says Froslass freezes humans or Pokémon it dislikes and keeps them as decorations. The official Froslass Pokédex page separately describes its ghost-imbued cold as capable of freezing even insubstantial things. That adds to its supernatural menace without changing what the Sun entry says about its victims.
6. Honedge: the sword that drains its holder
In the Pokémon Y text reproduced by Game Informer, Honedge’s cloth wraps around the arm of anyone who grabs its hilt and drains that person’s life energy. A weapon is meant to be picked up; Honedge makes that instinct dangerous.

7. Gourgeist: a cheerful song over suffering
The Pokémon Y entry reproduced by Game Informer says Gourgeist wraps prey in its hairlike arms and sings while observing their suffering. Its cheerful presentation makes the behavior more unnerving: the song does not comfort its victim; it accompanies the torment.
8. Bewear: affection with lethal consequences
According to the Pokémon Moon excerpt reproduced by Game Informer, trainers have died after Bewear crushed their spines with its habitual hugs. The entry makes a familiar gesture—an embrace—into a potentially fatal threat.

9. Palossand: a castle built over victims
The Pokémon Moon excerpt reproduced by Game Informer describes dried bones buried beneath Palossand’s castle, left by victims whose vitality it drained. The horror is partly in the setting: what looks like a harmless sandcastle conceals evidence of predation.
10. Mimikyu: the danger beneath the rag
In Pokémon Ultra Moon, as reproduced by Game Informer, a trainer who saw what lay beneath Mimikyu’s rag died painfully that night. The entry makes the concealed form frightening precisely by leaving it unseen; it does not identify what the trainer saw.

11. Yamask: carrying a human past
The official Yamask Pokédex page says it wanders ruins at night carrying a mask said to have been its face when it was human. Yamask is National Pokédex No. 562, the Ghost-type Spirit Pokémon. Its entry turns an ordinary object into a reminder of the Pokémon’s former identity.
12. Duskull: a nighttime search for children
The official Duskull Pokédex page says it wanders towns at night in search of children, whose vital energy is its favorite food. Duskull is National Pokédex No. 355, the Ghost-type Requiem Pokémon. The threat is direct: children are not merely caught in its path but singled out as prey.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the game version matters
A Pokédex entry is a piece of fiction attached to a particular game, not a universal biography that overrides every other version. The examples above retain the game named by their source; official Pokémon pages are identified separately where used. That distinction matters when a later game adds another account or describes the same Pokémon differently.
These entries also draw on different kinds of horror. Some threaten vulnerable victims, as Drifloon and Duskull do; others focus on bodily harm, like Houndoom and Bewear, or on possession and identity, as Banette and Yamask do. Their most unsettling feature is often the collision between familiar designs and grim lore: a balloon, a toy, a sandcastle, or a hug.
