If you want another cinematic horror game where decisions can put characters’ lives at risk, start with The Quarry or Supermassive Games’ The Dark Pictures anthology. For science-fiction horror, try Directive 8020; for branching stories without the same horror focus, consider Detroit: Become Human or Erica.
Until Dawn combines exploration, life-or-death choices, and slasher horror. PlayStation says its eight playable characters’ fates create hundreds of ending variations—not a fixed, precisely stated number of endings. The recommendations below distinguish close horror matches from games that share its interactive storytelling instead.

Closest horror games to Until Dawn
1. The Quarry
The Quarry is the clearest starting point if you want another teen-horror ensemble and consequential decisions. PlayStation explicitly recommends it to Until Dawn players and says choices shape the night. Check the store page for the edition and platform you plan to use.
2. The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan
This standalone cinematic horror story comes from the developers of Until Dawn. Its choices determine whether playable characters survive, making it a natural fit for players who want a compact cast and branching danger. The official page lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC; confirm the specific edition and platform listing before buying.

- Make the impossible choices where every decision could mean the difference between life and death, but for whom?
- Until Dawn will shock you with realistic graphics and terrify you with edge-of-your seat gameplay
- Carve your path to survival with branching story lines that promise no two experiences will be the same.
- Immerse yourself in a spine-tingling story written in collaboration with famed cult writer/directors Larry Fessenden & Graham Reznick.
3. The Dark Pictures: Little Hope
Little Hope is another standalone entry in the anthology, with a new cast, setting, and story. It suits players who want the anthology’s cinematic horror approach rather than a direct continuation of Man of Medan. The franchise uses different horror subgenres across its entries, so check the individual game page for its premise and current platform support.
4. The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes
House of Ashes offers another separate horror setup within the same anthology. Choose it for a new cast and scenario built around consequential choices, not because it continues the previous games’ story. Check its official game page for the specific premise and platform availability in your region.
5. The Dark Pictures: The Devil in Me
The Devil in Me is an anthology entry and one of PlayStation’s official suggestions for Until Dawn players. It is described as branching cinematic horror, and its publisher documents both online and pass-the-pad multiplayer. If you want to play with others, check the details of the mode and platform before starting: shared-story online play and taking turns with one controller are different ways to play.

6. Directive 8020
Choose Directive 8020 if you want to keep the branching survival-horror structure but leave the slasher setting behind for science fiction. Supermassive Games describes alien threats, stealth, improvised weapons, multiple endings, and a Turning Points decision tree that lets players revisit decisions. Its official page lists couch co-op for up to five players. As of May 2026, the developer’s news section says the game is available on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; check the current listing for your region and edition.

Choice-driven stories that are less like slasher horror
7. Detroit: Become Human
Detroit: Become Human is a better fit if your priority is branching outcomes and character fates rather than scares. Quantic Dream describes three protagonists facing moral dilemmas and says choices affect the broader story. Its official page calls the narrative “one of the most intricately branching narratives ever created”; that is the developer’s promotional description, not an independent comparison.
8. Erica
Erica is a live-action interactive thriller and an official PlayStation suggestion for Until Dawn players. Its filmed presentation and thriller emphasis make it an adjacent pick, not a direct match for a slasher game with an ensemble cast.
Rank #3
- Gripping story – set at an isolated mountain lodge where nothing is as it seems, 8 friends try to stay alive with a killer on the loose.
- Next gen horror – harnessing the power of an evolved Killzone Shadowfall engine, this 3rd person interactive horror will shock and horrify players thanks to its realistic graphics and edge of your seat gameplay.
- "Butterfly Effect" – players carve their path to survival with branching story lines which mean that no two stories will be the same.
- Life-and-death moral dilemmas - place yourself in impossible situations where there is no right or wrong answer.
9. The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is often recommended in player discussions to fans of narrative horror. Treat it as a broad, adjacent suggestion: the discussion-based recommendation alone does not establish which season, mechanics, or current platform edition would best match what you liked about Until Dawn. Check an official listing for the specific game you are considering.
10. Life Is Strange
Life Is Strange is another player-discussion recommendation for people who enjoy narrative choices. It is not a direct slasher-horror substitute, and the series includes individual entries with different stories. Choose a specific game based on its premise, then check its official page for features and platforms.
11. Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain is an adjacent cinematic interactive drama rather than a horror-first alternative. Consider it if you mainly want a story shaped by decisions and are willing to trade the slasher atmosphere for a different genre. Verify the current edition and platform on its official listing.

12. Beyond: Two Souls
Beyond: Two Souls is another cinematic interactive-drama suggestion, with a different genre fit from Until Dawn. It belongs on a shortlist for players drawn to interactive storytelling more than to survival horror. Check the specific edition and current platform before purchasing.
13. The Casting of Frank Stone
The Casting of Frank Stone is a player-discussion suggestion in the Supermassive narrative-horror space. It may interest fans looking for another game from that broad corner of interactive horror, but the available recommendation alone does not establish its specific mechanics or current availability. Consult its official product page for those details.
