This ranking favors games whose horror, tension, and exploration are central to the experience, with The Last of Us included as a clearly labeled horror-adjacent pick. Rank order is an editorial judgment, not a claim of review consensus.
How this ranking works
The order weighs how central horror is to each game, the kind of tension it creates, and whether exploration or combat shapes the experience. Survival horror and psychological horror take priority over horror-adjacent action. The verified platform notes below distinguish confirmed PS3 releases from titles that need a platform check before you seek out a copy.

Important: The available official information confirms PS3 details for only three games named here: Silent Hill: Downpour, Silent Hill 2 through the HD Collection, and The Last of Us. The remaining candidates are not listed as a ranked set because their PS3 versions and relevant details are not established by the cited official sources. A title should not be presented as a PS3 recommendation until its PS3 edition is verified.
1. Silent Hill 2 (HD Collection)
Why it ranks first
Silent Hill 2 is the strongest fit for a list led by psychological horror: its premise centers on James Sunderland returning to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from Mary. That setup puts mystery and dread ahead of a simple combat-first pitch. Konami’s official European product page lists the game on PS3, and PlayStation Blog described the planned PS3 Silent Hill HD Collection as including HD versions of both Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3.

What to know
- Horror style: Psychological horror.
- PS3 certainty: Konami lists Silent Hill 2 on PS3; PlayStation Blog confirms the HD Collection plan included it.
- Version note: The platform evidence cited here is for the HD Collection, not a standalone PS3 release of the original game.

2. Silent Hill: Downpour
Why it ranks second
Downpour is an explicitly PS3 survival-horror game, and its design is aimed at players who prefer unease and exploration to constant fighting. Producer Devin Shatsky described the contrast in a January 4, 2012 PlayStation Blog interview: “There’s a dichotomy among survival-horror players: the Resident Evil fans tend to prefer heavy combat, and Silent Hill fans tend to prefer slower, exploration-based horror.”

- first silent hill game on PS3
- All new next gen graphics bring silent hill to life like never before
- solve treacherous and deadly puzzles to learn dark secrets
- features an all new soundtrack by acclaimed series composer Akira Yamaoka
How its survival pressure works
The player has limited carrying capacity, weapons can break, and running can be the better choice when outnumbered. Those constraints make encounters feel like problems to manage rather than invitations to clear every threat. Konami’s European English product page lists PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, single-player mode, and a European release date of March 30, 2012.
- Horror style: Survival and psychological horror.
- Combat: Deliberately constrained; weapons may break.
- Play: Single-player, according to Konami’s product listing.
- Regional date: March 30, 2012, for Europe; this is not a universal release-date claim.

Rank #3
- Pure Survival Horror Returns; Shinji Mikami, the father of survival horror, is back to direct a chilling new game wrapped in haunting narrative. Tension and anxiety heighten dramatically as you explore the game's tortured world.
- Brutal Traps and Twisted Creatures; Face unthinkable horrors and cruel traps as you struggle to survive against overwhelming odds. Turn evil against itself by using the same diabolical devices against overwhelming deadly creatures.
- Unknown Threats in an Uncertain World; Mysterious and wicked fears loom ahead in a world that warps and twists around you.
- The New Face of Horror; Highly-crafted environments, horrifying anxiety, and an intricate story weave together to create an immersive world that will bring players to the height of tension.
3. The Last of Us
Why it belongs—with a qualification
The Last of Us is the horror-adjacent entry here, not a pure horror game. Sony announced it as a PS3 exclusive from Naughty Dog and described it as blending survival and action elements. Its inclusion makes sense for readers seeking danger and survival tension, but it should not be confused with the more horror-centered approach of the Silent Hill games.
- Horror style: Horror-adjacent survival action.
- Platform: Announced as a PS3 exclusive.
- Release timing: Sony’s 2011 announcement named May 7, 2013 as the planned release date; Naughty Dog’s December 2012 PlayStation Blog post also announced May 7, 2013.

Why this is not a 13-game ranking
The supplied official evidence does not establish thirteen PS3 horror games or support their relative ranking. Naming ten more titles from memory would risk including games without verified PS3 editions, mislabeling horror-adjacent games, or inventing comparative judgments. This guide therefore ranks only the three titles whose PS3 status and relevant positioning are supported by the cited official sources, rather than presenting an unverified list as fact.
For a longer list, check each candidate against an official publisher or platform listing for its PS3 edition, then assess whether horror is central or merely adjacent. Keep the regional edition and release information attached to the specific listing that establishes it.
