GamesRadar+ writer Emma-Jane Betts identifies 13 possible references, from callbacks to the original films and comics to tributes to Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister. Some are recognizable details; others are interpretations rather than confirmed developer Easter eggs. The count is Betts’s selection, not an official or exhaustive total.
What kind of game is Hellraiser: Revival?
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is a single-player, first-person action survival-horror game. You play as Aidan, whose girlfriend Sunny activates the Genesis Configuration, the puzzle box that sets the story in motion and also informs its puzzles. Saber describes it as a new story in the Hellraiser universe; Xbox Wire says it draws inspiration from the first two films but is not directly connected to their plots. That distinction matters: a visual echo of a film is not, by itself, proof of shared plot continuity or deliberate developer intent. Xbox Wire’s interview discusses the game’s place in the franchise, while Saber Interactive’s announcement introduces the premise and Doug Bradley’s return as Pinhead.
The PlayStation 5 launch date given in the PlayStation Blog’s August 19, 2026 preview was October 8, 2026. The preview also describes environmental and box-based puzzles and inventory management; Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin estimated an 8–12-hour campaign depending on skill and difficulty. That date has passed, but it does not establish current availability on every platform. Read the PlayStation Blog preview.

The 13 reported references
The locations and interpretations below are reported in GamesRadar+’s guide. The guide does not establish that the developers confirmed each one as intentional; where it signals uncertainty, the distinction is kept clear. GamesRadar+’s full guide is the source for these 13 findings.
1. A chained mattress at the first entry into Hell
As Aidan first enters Hell, a mattress is thrown in front of him and dragged away by chains. Betts connects the image to the first two Hellraiser films, particularly Julia’s resurrection in Hellraiser II. The guide does not identify the mattress as a precise recreation of a specific film prop, so this is best read as a broad visual callback.
2. Wires cutting into a detective’s face
Near the first gun, a dead detective has a device with wires cutting into his face. GamesRadar+ compares the body horror to Dr. Philip Channard’s transformation in Hellraiser II. The resemblance is in the disturbing head-and-wire imagery, not a claim that the detective is Channard.
3. The shopkeeper is identified as an Eremite
A document beside the shopkeeper reportedly identifies her as an Eremite. The name connects to the skeletal, winged figure seen in the first film and to creature lore in the Hellraiser comics. It is a lore reference delivered through an in-game document, rather than an explanation that the game’s story is directly adapting the comics.

4. Orno, a Cenobite from the comics
The same note reportedly mentions Orno. GamesRadar+ identifies Orno as a comics Cenobite associated with creating new puzzle boxes. The reference is easy to miss if you only recognize characters from the films, but the specific identification comes from the guide’s reading of the note and franchise lore.
5. A grave that points to Ozzy Osbourne
A grave inscription, glasses, bat statues, and purple candles are read together as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. The connection extends to his song “Hellraiser,” which gives the grave a music-and-franchise link rather than a simple celebrity cameo. The individual details are the guide’s evidence for the interpretation.

6. Lemmy’s cowboy hat
A cowboy hat beside the grave is identified by GamesRadar+ as a nod to Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. The guide links Lemmy and the band to “Hellraiser” and to Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. It is a smaller tribute than the Ozzy arrangement, relying on a recognizable personal accessory and the musical connection.
7. “Damballa” on a magazine
A magazine bears the name “Damballa,” which Betts suggests may nod to Child’s Play and the broader 1980s horror landscape. The match is tentative: books and magazines can be reused as stock environmental assets, so the name alone does not confirm a deliberate crossover reference.

A cultist note titled “Hell on Earth” shares its wording with the subtitle of the third film, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. This is among the more direct references because it uses the film’s exact subtitle, though the title by itself does not establish a larger plot connection.

9. A possible It balloon
A yellow balloon prompts GamesRadar+ to suggest a possible reference to the yellow balloon in the 1990s It miniseries. The guide calls the identification a stretch and notes the absence of other It signifiers. Treat this as a speculative resemblance, not a confirmed Stephen King crossover.
10. Achievement names that quote or echo other works
GamesRadar+ points to a cluster of Steam achievement names that appear to reference other films, games, and franchises. Its examples and proposed connections include:
| Achievement name | Reference proposed by GamesRadar+ |
|---|---|
| “Only Nightmares Last Forever” | Hellraiser |
| “A waste of good suffering” | Hellraiser |
| “What Are You Selling?” | Resident Evil 4 |
| “What are you buying?” | Resident Evil 4 |
| “What’s in the Box” | Seven |
| “No life in the void, only death” | The Lord of the Rings |
| “Burn, oh such a limited imagination” | Star Wars |
| “Unlimited Power” | Star Wars |
These are the guide’s identifications, not a developer-attributed list of inspirations. The paired Resident Evil 4 lines are especially recognizable as a repeated merchant exchange; the other matches are phrasing-based echoes that the guide associates with the named works.

11. Tentacles ending in surgical blades
Some hallways feature tentacles tipped with surgical blades. GamesRadar+ compares this body-horror image to the Doctor/Channard imagery in Hellraiser II. The comparison is a visual one; the guide does not claim that the hallway reproduces a specific scene frame for frame.
12. A Red Dragon-like painting in Marlowe’s mansion
A painting in Marlowe’s mansion is described as an interpretation of William Blake’s Red Dragon. GamesRadar+ also draws a thematic comparison to the villain of Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon. The painting is not described as an exact replica, so the useful distinction is between the Blake-inspired image and the additional literary association.
13. A visual echo of Frank Cotton being taken by chains
Depending on a choice, a scene can resemble Frank Cotton being pulled away by chains in the first Hellraiser film. GamesRadar+ explicitly notes that Aidan does not say “Jesus Wept” and that the image is not an exact recreation. It is therefore a visual echo, not a direct quotation of the film’s line or scene.

The list mixes direct wording, documented in-game details, recognizable imagery, and more speculative associations. A note titled “Hell on Earth” is a clearer textual match than a yellow balloon that could evoke several things. The shopkeeper’s document gives a concrete name to investigate, while the Ozzy and Lemmy readings depend on interpreting several environmental objects together. None of the individual identifications is presented here as developer-confirmed; Xbox Wire’s comments establish the game’s broad relationship to the films, not the intent behind each object or achievement.

The quoted Aidan statement was published on the PlayStation Blog on July 16, 2026. Willits’s description appears in the PlayStation Blog announcement.
For context on how the puzzle box fits the game, Rajin said the team used the Genesis Configuration “at the centre of things” and wanted “a narrative purpose for puzzles wherever we can.” His comments are in the PlayStation Blog puzzle preview.
