Short answer: the Backbone One was the best handheld-style controller for iPhone in 2022, while the SteelSeries Nimbus+ was the strongest Apple-focused full-size option. Xbox Core Wireless Controller and PlayStation DualSense were better choices for readers who also owned consoles, PCs, Apple TV, or larger iPads. The Razer Kishi and Rotor Riot/RiotPWR were the best wired options.

One clarification matters: “MFi” is often used loosely in controller roundups. MFi means Made for iPhone/iPad, Apple’s accessory-certification program. It does not mean every controller that works with an Apple device is MFi-certified. Apple also supports compatible Xbox, PlayStation, and other controllers through its Game Controller framework. This guide therefore covers the 15 notable controllers in the 2022 product landscape, labeling certification and compatibility separately.

What “MFi” means for iPhone and iPad controllers

An MFi controller is an accessory certified through Apple’s Made for iPhone/iPad program. A Bluetooth controller can also work with an iPhone or iPad without being marketed as an MFi accessory. Apple’s controller framework supports MFi devices as well as supported Xbox and PlayStation controllers, but compatibility still depends on the operating system, controller firmware, connector, physical fit, and the individual game.

Pairing a controller successfully does not guarantee that every App Store game will accept it. Apple notes that button support and hardware features vary by controller and app. Check the game’s listing or developer documentation before buying specifically for one title. Apple’s Game Controller documentation explains the supported controller categories and connection methods.

This is a historical buying guide for 2022. “Best in 2022” does not necessarily mean the product is still sold, supported, or suitable for a 2026 device. Connector changes, discontinued models, used batteries, and renamed product generations are especially important.

Telescopic versus full-size controllers

Telescopic phone controllers

A telescopic controller holds the phone between two controller halves. Backbone One, Razer Kishi, GameSir X2, and Joso follow this format.

  • Advantages: centered screen, portable design, console-style controls, and—on some models—pass-through charging.
  • Disadvantages: restrictive case clearance, connector limitations, and poor physical suitability for full-size iPads. Bluetooth-free models generally cannot be used independently with Apple TV or a separate iPad.

Full-size Bluetooth controllers

A full-size controller connects wirelessly while the iPhone or iPad sits separately on a stand or mount. Examples include the Xbox Core, DualSense, Nimbus+, Nimbus, Stratus, C.T.R.L.i, Contour, and PXN-6603.

  • Advantages: better long-session comfort, natural iPad use, easier multiplayer, and broader use with Apple TV, Mac, PC, Android, or consoles.
  • Disadvantages: Bluetooth pairing, possible interference, separate phone support, and—on some models—replaceable batteries.

The 15 best MFi and compatible controllers from 2022

1. Backbone One — best polished handheld experience

The Lightning Backbone One was the standout choice for iPhone owners who wanted a handheld console feel. It connected directly to the phone, avoiding Bluetooth pairing, and included analog sticks, triggers, a D-pad, face buttons, pass-through charging, and a headphone jack. Its companion app organized compatible games and added social, recording, and streaming features.

Ordinary controller use did not require a Backbone+ subscription, although some companion-app features were subscription-related. The 2022 recommendation concerns the Lightning version; do not describe it using specifications from the later USB-C second-generation model.

Best for: iPhone owners who prioritize portability and a centered screen. Skip it if: you use a thick case, a USB-C iPhone, a full-size iPad, or Apple TV as your main gaming device.

Source coverage from 2022: Apple Arcade controller coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Razer Kishi for iPhone — best wired telescopic option

The iPhone version of the Razer Kishi used a Lightning connection rather than Bluetooth. Its compact telescopic design, clickable thumbsticks, console-style controls, and pass-through charging made it attractive for mobile gaming. A direct connection can reduce Bluetooth pairing problems and may reduce wireless latency, but “zero latency” would be too strong: responsiveness still depends on the phone, game, software, and physical connection.

Its biggest weaknesses were case clearance and limited use outside compatible iPhones. A Kishi that fits one phone generation should not automatically be assumed to fit another.

Best for: wired iPhone play. Skip it if: you need a controller for a large iPad, Apple TV, or a newer device with a different connector. The current Razer Kishi V2 page should not be treated as proof of the exact first-generation 2022 model’s specifications.

3. SteelSeries Nimbus+ — best Apple-focused full-size controller

The Nimbus+ offered a conventional full-size shape, Bluetooth, clickable analog sticks, a tactile D-pad, and a rechargeable battery. SteelSeries advertised approximately 50 hours of battery life, which should be treated as a claimed figure rather than guaranteed real-world runtime. Some packages included an iPhone mount and time-limited Apple Arcade promotional access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It was a stronger iPad choice than telescopic controllers because the tablet could sit separately on a stand. Confirm whether a listing is for the original Nimbus, Nimbus+, or a later Nimbus product; they are not interchangeable.

Rank #2
GameSir G8 Plus MFi iPhone Controller, Hall Effect Sticks
  • Officially MFi Certified Controller: Play seamlessly gaming experience on iPhone and iPad as an official Apple-certified accessory.
  • 125-215mm Ultra-Wide Stretch Design: Engineered with an adjustable stretch range from 125mm to 215mm, the G8+ MFi fits a wide variety of devices, including the iPad mini and larger smartphones.
  • Console Controller Grade: Designed with console-controller-level ergonomics and laser-textured grips, the G8+ MFi offers exceptional comfort and stability, allowing gamers to stay in control even during long sessions.
  • The Anti Stick-Drift Solution: Equipped with GameSir Hall Effect sticks, the G8+ MFi delivers pinpoint accuracy and smooth 360° control. Using non-contact magnetic sensors.
  • Hall Effect Analog Triggers: GameSir’s precision-tuned Hall Effect analog triggers provide unparalleled smoothness and responsiveness. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT.

Best for: Apple Arcade and long sessions on iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Watch for: old stock, regional promotions, and model confusion.

4. Xbox Core Wireless Controller — best cross-platform value

The Xbox Core Wireless Controller was one of the safest recommendations for readers who also owned an Xbox, Windows PC, or other compatible devices. It included the familiar Xbox layout, hybrid D-pad, textured grips, analog triggers, USB-C, and a 3.5 mm headset jack. Apple specifically lists compatible Xbox controllers among those that can pair with iPhone and iPad. Apple’s pairing guidance explains the general process.

The standard configuration uses two AA batteries rather than an included built-in rechargeable battery. A rechargeable pack may be purchased separately, so do not assume every package has the same battery arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, PC, and Xbox owners. Skip it if: you want an integrated phone grip or pocketable handheld design.

Official product information is available from Xbox.

5. PlayStation 5 DualSense — best premium controller for PlayStation owners

The DualSense paired with compatible Apple devices over Bluetooth and offered a comfortable full-size design, a rechargeable battery, a built-in microphone, and a headset jack. It was particularly compelling for PlayStation owners who wanted one controller across console and mobile use.

Adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are hardware capabilities, not guarantees that every iPhone or iPad game will use them. Apple-platform support is game-specific, and many games expose only conventional buttons, sticks, and triggers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: PlayStation owners and premium full-size comfort. Skip it if: you expect every PS5 feature to carry over to iOS games.

See the official DualSense page for the controller’s hardware features.

6. GameSir X2 Bluetooth — best flexible telescopic alternative

The Bluetooth GameSir X2 placed the phone between two controller halves and offered ABXY buttons, a D-pad, an analog stick, and a rechargeable battery. Bluetooth made it more flexible across phone platforms than a Lightning-only controller, but it also introduced pairing and interference as additional failure points.

“GameSir X2” is not precise enough by itself. GameSir sold multiple X2 versions, including Bluetooth and wired variants with different connectors and platform assumptions. Verify the exact model before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: readers who want a telescopic controller without being tied to a Lightning connection. Check: iOS mode, device dimensions, case clearance, and return terms.

GameSir G8 Plus MFi iPhone Controller, Apple MFi Certified USB-C Gaming Controller for iPhone 15/16/17 Series, Compatible with iPad Mini & Android, Hall Effect Sticks, 2 Programmable Back Buttons(Renewed)

7. Rotor Riot/RiotPWR — best wired iPhone/iPad alternative

Rotor Riot and later RiotPWR-branded controllers targeted wired iPhone and iPad play. Relevant models offered Lightning connectivity, pass-through charging, full-size controls, and companion-app support. They were useful when plug-in reliability mattered more than wireless flexibility.

Contemporary coverage also reported drawbacks involving ergonomics, app crashes, and inconsistent cloud-gaming behavior. Branding and hardware changed over time, so identify the exact model rather than treating every Rotor Riot controller as identical.

Best for: wired Apple-device play with charging pass-through. Skip it if: you need wireless use or a universally mature companion app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check current model information at RiotPWR.

8. GameSir T4 Pro — best feature-heavy budget option, with verification required

The GameSir T4 Pro appealed to budget buyers with vibration and multiple connection modes. It was discussed for Apple Arcade and cloud gaming, but its inclusion should be less confident than the Backbone, Nimbus+, Xbox, or DualSense recommendations.

Verify the exact unit’s iOS support and whether it was officially MFi-certified or merely Bluetooth-compatible. Broad compatibility language in a marketplace listing is not proof that every Apple game or connection mode will work.

Best for: readers willing to verify specifications before buying. Risk: certification, firmware, and mode support may be unclear.

9. GameSir G4 Pro — best for motion-control and cross-platform features

The G4 Pro was marketed with Bluetooth, wired USB-C, and 2.4 GHz connection claims, along with a six-axis gyroscope, retractable phone holder, and swappable or magnetic ABXY buttons. Those features made it interesting for readers who used several platforms.

However, compatibility claims must be separated from confirmed iOS game support. A controller can offer several connection methods without every method working on every Apple device.

Best for: feature-focused buyers who use more than one platform. Verify: the connection mode, iOS compatibility, and game-specific mapping.

10. PXN-6603 — best low-cost full-size setup, if the listing is trustworthy

The PXN-6603 used Bluetooth and commonly appeared with an adjustable phone holder. Contemporary listings made varying claims about battery capacity, runtime, and supported iPhone or iPad models. Those figures should be treated as seller or manufacturer claims unless backed by a manual.

The product’s age makes current stock, firmware support, and replacement parts uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: a low-cost full-size controller with a mount. Buy only when: the exact model, connector or charging cable, supported device list, and return policy are clear.

  • 7-Color RGB Light Ring & 600mAh Battery: The mobile game controller features a 7-color adjustable light ring on the joystick(ABXY button lights can be turned off, but their colors are not adjustable). The lighting is vibrant yet eye-friendly. The built-in 600mAh battery provides up to 6 hours of battery life in brightness mode — enough for a full day of gaming

11. SteelSeries Nimbus — best legacy Apple option

The original Nimbus was an older Bluetooth controller positioned for Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad. It offered traditional controls and commonly advertised more than 40 hours of battery life. In 2022 it was mainly a legacy alternative to the Nimbus+.

Do not assume a Nimbus listing is a Nimbus+. Check the exact model, battery condition, included mount, and compatibility with the reader’s iOS or iPadOS version.

Best for: owners of older Apple hardware or careful used-market buyers. Risk: age, discontinued stock, and outdated support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. SteelSeries Stratus — best budget legacy purchase

The SteelSeries Stratus was an older Bluetooth controller with a symmetrical control arrangement in some descriptions and LED player indicators. It could make sense as a cheap used controller, but its battery and connector technology were dated by 2022.

Check the return policy and battery condition before buying. Historical iOS compatibility does not establish compatibility with current Apple software.

13. Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i — best classic used MFi controller

The C.T.R.L.i was associated with Apple certification, Bluetooth connectivity, a phone holder, multiplayer use in compatible games, and AAA batteries. Its appeal was primarily historical and used-market value rather than modern support.

Mad Catz availability and support were significant concerns. Treat marketplace listings cautiously, confirm that the holder and battery compartment are intact, and avoid claiming current iOS compatibility without model-specific evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Tt eSPORTS Contour — best legacy controller with an integrated holder

The Tt eSPORTS Contour used Bluetooth and included an adjustable device clip. Historical descriptions also discussed rechargeable-battery claims and possible use with an Apple Digital AV Adapter.

It should be labeled old or potentially discontinued. Any iOS compatibility statement refers to historical support unless current documentation says otherwise. Check stock, included accessories, battery health, and return protection.

15. Joso, Coobile, or Megadream — generic budget alternatives

Joso, Coobile, and Megadream appeared in the original 2022 list, but they should not be presented with the same confidence as Backbone, Razer, SteelSeries, Xbox, PlayStation, or RiotPWR. Marketplace names and specifications may be inconsistent, and MFi credentials are not clear for the exact products.

Buy one only after verifying:

  • the exact model and connector;
  • supported iPhone and iPad dimensions;
  • case clearance;
  • whether the game you care about supports controllers;
  • firmware or companion-app requirements; and
  • a practical return policy.

These are generic alternatives, not safe universal recommendations.

How to choose the right controller

Choose Lightning or wired when you want simplicity

Lightning controllers such as the 2022 Backbone One, Razer Kishi, and relevant RiotPWR models offered direct connection, no Bluetooth pairing, and sometimes pass-through charging. Their trade-off was limited device compatibility and poor future-proofing as Apple moved toward USB-C. They also tend to be unsuitable for Apple TV and full-size iPad use.

Best Value
GameSir X5 Lite Mobile Gaming Controller for Android,Hall Effect Joystick
  • WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
  • MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
  • HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
  • CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.

Choose Bluetooth for iPad and cross-platform use

Bluetooth is usually the safer format for a full-size iPad because the tablet can sit separately on a stand. It is also preferable when one controller must serve iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, PC, Android, Xbox, or PlayStation use. The trade-off is pairing, interference, and occasional mode-switching problems.

Check the case before buying a telescopic model

Rugged, wallet, battery, and camera-protective cases can prevent a telescopic controller from fitting or stop its connector from reaching the phone port. Check the manufacturer’s maximum case thickness and remove the case if necessary.

Separate software compatibility from physical fit

A controller may send supported inputs to an iPad but still be unable to hold the tablet. Full-size Bluetooth controllers are normally safer for iPad owners. Conversely, a controller that physically holds an iPhone may still fail in a game that lacks controller support.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud gaming and remote play need extra checking

Cloud services and remote-play apps can add button-mapping problems. A controller may pair correctly while menu buttons, capture buttons, triggers, or button labels behave differently in a native app, browser game, or remote-play client. Test the exact service you intend to use.

How to connect a controller to iPhone or iPad

Bluetooth pairing

  1. Put the controller into pairing mode using the manufacturer’s documented button combination.
  2. Open Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad.
  3. Tap the controller when it appears under available devices.
  4. Open a controller-supported game and test the controls.

If pairing fails, select the controller in Bluetooth settings, choose Forget This Device, restart the controller, and pair again. Charge it first and reduce nearby Bluetooth connections if interference is suspected. Apple’s official support guide also notes that the number of supported controllers can vary with the device and wireless environment.

Wired connection

Connect a compatible wired controller to the appropriate iPhone or iPad port. Apple’s developer documentation says a USB-connected controller connects automatically, but the actual result depends on the controller, cable, adapter, device port, and operating-system support. Lightning accessories must not be retroactively described as USB-C accessories.

Troubleshooting controller problems

  • It will not pair: charge it, enter pairing mode again, forget the old Bluetooth entry, and check whether it is still connected to a console, computer, or another phone.
  • It pairs but does nothing in a game: confirm that the game supports controllers. Pairing alone is not enough.
  • Some buttons fail: the app may support only a subset of inputs, or the controller may be in Android, PC, or console mode.
  • Inputs feel delayed: reduce wireless interference, close competing connections, update firmware, and compare with a wired controller. Do not assume any connection is universally lag-free.
  • The phone does not fit: remove the case and compare the phone’s dimensions with the controller’s stated range. Thick camera edges and wallet cases are common obstacles.
  • An iPad does not fit: use a full-size Bluetooth controller with a separate stand instead of forcing a phone-sized telescopic controller.
  • Cloud gaming maps buttons incorrectly: test the native app and browser version separately, and check the service’s supported-controller list.
  • The controller keeps disconnecting: update the device and controller firmware, fully charge the battery, and check whether the controller is switching between saved devices.

2022 buying decision guide

  • Best handheld iPhone experience: Backbone One.
  • Best wired, latency-conscious design: Razer Kishi.
  • Best Apple-focused full-size controller: SteelSeries Nimbus+.
  • Best cross-platform choice: Xbox Core Wireless Controller.
  • Best for PlayStation owners: DualSense.
  • Best wired alternative with charging pass-through: Rotor Riot/RiotPWR.
  • Best used-market strategy: Nimbus+, Xbox controller, or DualSense, provided the exact model and battery condition are confirmed and the seller offers returns.
  • Highest-risk purchases: generic Joso, Coobile, Megadream, and poorly documented PXN listings.

What changed after 2022?

Current products should not be confused with the models reviewed for 2022. For example, Apple’s current listing for the USB-C second-generation Backbone One shows a later product at $99.95, while the current SteelSeries Nimbus Dual-Mode Cloud listing shows $149.95 and specifies iOS 16 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 16 or later for iPad. Those current prices and requirements are not evidence of 2022 pricing or availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current listings also include the Backbone Pro, a larger controller with Bluetooth and broader cross-device positioning. These are replacement or successor-style options for a current buyer, not retroactive additions to the 2022 ranking. Prices and availability change; the cited prices were observed in the United States on August 16, 2026 and should be checked before purchase.

Current product references: USB-C Backbone One, SteelSeries Nimbus Dual-Mode Cloud, and Backbone Pro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Xbox and DualSense controllers actually MFi-certified?

Not necessarily. They are included because Apple supports compatible Xbox and PlayStation controllers, but that is distinct from an accessory carrying Apple’s MFi designation.

Can every iPhone or iPad game use a controller?

No. Controller support is determined partly by the individual game. A controller can pair successfully while a particular app ignores it or supports only some inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a Lightning controller better than Bluetooth?

For a compatible iPhone, wired Lightning play can simplify pairing and offer pass-through charging. Bluetooth is more flexible for iPad, Apple TV, computers, Android, and multiplayer.

Will a telescopic iPhone controller hold an iPad?

Usually not. Telescopic models are generally designed for phone dimensions. Use a full-size Bluetooth controller and a separate iPad stand unless the manufacturer explicitly lists your iPad model.

The Bottom Line

For 2022 iPhone buyers, choose the Backbone One for the best handheld design or the Razer Kishi for direct wired play. Choose the Nimbus+ for Apple-focused full-size gaming, the Xbox Core for cross-platform value, and the DualSense for PlayStation owners. Treat legacy and generic models as verification-heavy used-market options, not universal MFi recommendations.
