1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—but only with important qualifications. Nvidia introduced Install-to-Play on August 18, 2025, adding more than 2,200 publisher-approved Steam titles and taking GeForce NOW’s advertised catalog above 4,500 games. Nvidia still uses those figures on its 2026 pages. The feature does not unlock the entire Steam library: it is Steam-only, requires a paid Performance or Ultimate membership, requires you to own the game, and downloads the title to Nvidia’s cloud storage before the first launch.
What actually doubled?
Nvidia said Install-to-Play would add more than 2,200 Steam games and expand GeForce NOW to more than 4,500 accessible games. That is why the company described the change as effectively doubling the service’s supported catalog. The announcement was made at Gamescom on August 18, 2025—not in August 2026. Nvidia’s launch announcement is the primary source for the original figures.

The wording matters. This was a doubling of GeForce NOW’s supported catalog from Nvidia’s perspective, not a claim that 100% of Steam games became playable in the cloud. Nvidia’s current catalog page advertises 4,500+ total games and 2,200+ Install-to-Play titles, but counts can change as games are added, removed, or reclassified. Check the individual game listing rather than relying on the headline number.
Ready-to-Play versus Install-to-Play
| Feature | Ready-to-Play | Install-to-Play |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Nvidia prepares and maintains the game on its servers. | You download and install the game onto GeForce NOW cloud storage. |
| First launch | Usually available immediately. | Requires a cloud download and installation first. |
| Availability | Curated and managed by Nvidia. | Limited to publisher-opted-in Steam titles exposed by Nvidia. |
| Membership | Availability depends on the title and plan. | Requires Performance or Ultimate. |
Ready-to-Play is the traditional GeForce NOW model: Nvidia configures, tests, updates, and maintains the game so you can launch it with minimal preparation. Install-to-Play changes the catalog model. Instead of Nvidia preconfiguring every supported title, the publisher permits cloud installation and the user installs the game on demand.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Does it work with every Steam game?
No. A game qualifies only when several conditions are met:
- You own it through the connected Steam account, unless it is free-to-play or otherwise available through a supported entitlement.
- The publisher has opted into Steam Cloud Gaming.
- Nvidia exposes the title as an Install-to-Play game.
- The game works with GeForce NOW’s managed environment, storage allocation, launcher requirements, and compatibility rules.
Steam ownership alone is not enough. A game may appear in your Steam library but be absent from GeForce NOW because its publisher has not opted in, Nvidia has not enabled it in your region or client, or the particular edition is unsupported. Nvidia says to look for the Install-to-Play label in the app or catalog. Its current game catalog is the best place to check before subscribing.
Install-to-Play also does not turn GeForce NOW into a general-purpose remote Windows PC. You cannot assume that arbitrary software, mods, launchers, anti-cheat systems, peripherals, or unusual local configurations will work as they would on your own computer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do you need to buy the games again?
Normally, no. Install-to-Play follows a “bring your own game” model. You pay Nvidia for access to cloud hardware and the streaming service, but you must separately own the Steam game. A GeForce NOW membership does not include the newly available Steam titles or transfer ownership of them to your account. Nvidia’s how-to guide explains the account-linking and game-access model.
There are therefore three separate costs to consider:
- Game ownership: the Steam purchase or other applicable entitlement.
- GeForce NOW membership: Performance or Ultimate is required for Install-to-Play.
- Persistent storage: optional recurring storage if you want installations and certain save data retained between sessions.
Who can use Install-to-Play?
Install-to-Play is restricted to Nvidia’s paid Performance and Ultimate memberships. Free users cannot use the feature, and buying storage does not substitute for a qualifying membership. Nvidia offers monthly and annual structures and promotes a Day Pass in some markets, but prices and promotions vary by region and can change. Verify the live checkout page before purchasing through the official GeForce NOW membership page.

How cloud storage works
Included single-session storage
Performance and Ultimate members receive 100GB of single-session cloud storage for Install-to-Play without a separate storage charge. In practice, you start a session, download and install the game in Nvidia’s cloud environment, and then launch it when installation finishes. The installation may not still be present the next time you connect, so a later session can require another download.
Nvidia also warns that some games may require more storage to begin installation. A 100GB allocation is not the same as 100GB of permanent disk space, and a game’s advertised install size may not capture every temporary file or launcher requirement.
Optional persistent storage
Nvidia’s storage prices seen on August 18, 2026 were:
| Capacity | Price seen |
|---|---|
| 200GB | $2.99 per month |
| 500GB | $4.99 per month |
| 1TB | $7.99 per month |
Recheck the US checkout flow before publication or purchase because pricing, promotions, taxes, and regional availability can change. Persistent storage can retain downloaded installations and save data for games that do not support Steam Cloud. Games with Steam Cloud can synchronize supported saves through Steam, although that does not necessarily preserve the entire installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Persistent storage makes the most sense if you repeatedly return to large games, dislike repeated downloads, or play titles without Steam Cloud. It is poor value if you are testing the feature once or constantly rotating through many large games.

How to install a Steam game
- Subscribe to an active Performance or Ultimate membership.
- Open the GeForce NOW app or web experience and sign in.
- Link or synchronize the Steam account containing the game.
- Search for the title directly in GeForce NOW.
- Confirm that the listing shows the Install-to-Play label.
- Select the game and choose the available storage option when prompted.
- Select Install.
- Wait for the cloud download and installation to complete.
- Launch the game after installation finishes.
The full PC game is downloaded to Nvidia’s cloud computer, not to your laptop, phone, TV, tablet, or handheld. Your device receives the streamed video and sends back your controls. The first-session wait therefore depends on the game’s size, server conditions, and the connection between Nvidia’s infrastructure and your session. Install-to-Play is not “instant play” in the same sense as Ready-to-Play.
Storage location and regional behavior
Nvidia’s FAQ says the persistent-storage location is selected when you first purchase or set up an Install-to-Play game. Changing that location later can erase saved Install-to-Play data. Choose carefully and avoid changing it casually.
For Install-to-Play games, the app’s ordinary server-location preference does not determine where the game runs. The title runs from the selected storage location. Ready-to-Play games continue to use the normal server-location setting. This distinction matters if you travel, move between regions, or use a VPN; changing locations may affect both data availability and latency.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Network requirements still apply
Install-to-Play increases game availability, but it does not remove the normal demands of cloud gaming. Nvidia’s current requirements list at least:
- 15 Mbps for HD streaming up to 60 frames per second.
- 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 frames per second.
- Higher bandwidth for QHD, ultrawide, 4K, and high-refresh streaming.
- Less than 80ms latency to a GeForce NOW data center is recommended.
Nvidia recommends wired Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi. These are service-level requirements, not guarantees. Congestion, Wi-Fi interference, latency variation, packet loss, and data caps can still make a game unpleasant—especially competitive games.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Problem | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The game does not appear | Library sync failed, the wrong Steam account is linked, the publisher has not opted in, or Nvidia has not enabled the title in your region or client. | Re-sync Steam, search the catalog directly, verify ownership and edition, and check for the Install-to-Play label. |
| Installation fails or space is insufficient | The title needs more than the available 100GB session allocation or has additional launcher/storage requirements. | Check the install size and consider persistent storage. Some titles may remain unavailable within the allocation. |
| The game downloads again | You are using single-session storage. | Use persistent storage if you regularly return to the same large title. |
| Save progress is missing | The game may not support Steam Cloud, or synchronization has not completed. | Check Steam Cloud support. Persistent storage is recommended for games that do not retain saves through Steam Cloud. |
| Installation is slow | The first session requires a cloud download; speed varies by game size and network/server conditions. | Allow the installation to finish and avoid assuming a fixed wait time. |
| A title appears in Steam but not GeForce NOW | Steam ownership does not override publisher opt-in or Nvidia’s availability decisions. | Check the official catalog and do not assume that every Steam Cloud Gaming opt-in appears immediately everywhere. |

Which devices benefit?
The feature is particularly useful on a Mac, Chromebook, older laptop, Steam Deck, phone, tablet, TV, or other supported device that cannot run demanding PC games locally. Nvidia promotes GeForce NOW across PCs, Macs, browsers, handhelds, TVs, phones, iPads, and Steam Deck. However, resolution, frame rate, HDR, input support, app availability, and membership features vary by device, plan, and region. Confirm support for your specific hardware rather than assuming every platform behaves identically.
Before-you-subscribe checklist
- Is your desired game listed in the GeForce NOW catalog?
- Does the listing show Install-to-Play?
- Do you own the correct edition on Steam?
- Does the game support Steam Cloud?
- Is its installation smaller than the storage available to you?
- Can your connection reliably meet Nvidia’s bandwidth and latency guidance?
- Will you need persistent storage?
- Are Performance or Ultimate available at an acceptable price in your country?
Install-to-Play compared with alternatives
Ready-to-Play GeForce NOW remains the better choice if immediate launches and Nvidia-managed updates matter more than catalog breadth.
A local gaming PC provides the most control over files, mods, launchers, peripherals, anti-cheat, and unsupported games, but costs more upfront and requires local storage, maintenance, power, and cooling.
A Steam Deck or Windows handheld gives you portable local play without streaming dependency, but demanding games may require performance compromises and large downloads consume local storage.
Shadow PC is a more general-purpose cloud Windows PC and may offer more control, but usually requires more setup and still requires separate game ownership. Availability and pricing vary by country.
Boosteroid offers a different cloud-gaming catalog and regional footprint. Check the individual title and local performance before switching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nvidia’s claim that GeForce NOW doubled Steam support accurate?
Broadly, yes, as a description of the August 18, 2025 launch: Nvidia added more than 2,200 opted-in Steam titles and said the total catalog exceeded 4,500 games. It does not mean every Steam game is supported.
Can free GeForce NOW members use Install-to-Play?
No. Install-to-Play requires a paid Performance or Ultimate membership.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need to own Install-to-Play games?
Yes. You generally must own the game through the connected Steam account. The GeForce NOW subscription pays for cloud access, not the Steam license.
Is Install-to-Play instant?
No. The first session requires the game to download and install in Nvidia’s cloud environment. Persistent storage can prevent repeated downloads in later sessions.
What happens to my saves?
Steam Cloud-supported games can synchronize supported saves. For games without Steam Cloud, persistent storage may be needed to retain installation and save data between sessions.
The Bottom Line
Install-to-Play is a substantial expansion for Steam owners using low-powered laptops, Macs, handhelds, TVs, and tablets. But the accurate promise is “more publisher-approved Steam games on a premium cloud service,” not “the entire Steam library in the cloud.” Check your exact game, plan, storage needs, region, and network before subscribing.
