WIRED’s October 2024 roundup selected accessories for distinct PS5 needs: a second controller, charging, storage, audio, remote play, media control, a display upgrade, and VR. Its recommendations below are historical, source-attributed picks—not a 2026 comparison of current models, prices, or availability. Check compatibility and today’s listings before buying.
How to choose PS5 accessories
Start with the problem you want to solve. A second controller or headset can improve everyday play; storage helps manage a crowded library; Portal or a phone setup moves play away from the TV. A new display, premium surround sound, and VR are larger discretionary upgrades. WIRED’s picks and testing notes are from its October 19, 2024 roundup.
Controllers and charging
Sony DualSense: a second gamepad
WIRED recommends the standard DualSense as an extra controller, highlighting its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The roundup also flags stick drift as a long-term concern; that is a consideration, not a prediction about any individual controller.
PowerA Twin Charging Station: a dock for two
For households with multiple controllers, WIRED liked the dock’s drop-in setup and layout. A charging station keeps controllers together and avoids plugging in each one by cable, but it is an organizational convenience rather than a requirement for using the console.

#1 Best Overall
- Attention: Compatible with PS5/PS5 Slim/PS5 Pro.
- 【Multifunctional Design for PS5/PS5 Slim/PS5 Pro】This PS5 stand comes with an efficient 3‑speed PS5 cooling fan, a PS5 controller charging station, 3 extra USB ports, LED charge indicators, a headset holder, slots for an external hard drive and a remote control, plus storage for 14 game discs. It keeps all your PS5 accessories clean and neatly organized.
- 【Excellent Storage & Easy Operation】This PS5 vertical stand with a 3‑speed PlayStation 5 fan integrates multiple functions into one unit. It saves a lot of space by storing your PS5 console, PS5 controllers, headset, remote control, and 14 games all together. You can keep so many PS5 accessories in one place, which avoids having to search for items during use. Everything can be stored safely in a vertical position.
- 【Efficient 3‑Speed Cooling】Because the base of the PS5 console has an air outlet, the suction cooling system helps dissipate heat from your PS5 console, preventing overheating after long gaming sessions. It offers low noise and faster cooling for your PS5. There are three different speed settings ranging from 3100 to 3500 RPM; the PS5 fan can be adjusted or turned off via the touch switch on the side of the PS5 holder according to your needs.
- 【Fast Charging & Indicators】This PS5/PS5 Slim/PS5 Pro cooling stand charger can charge two PlayStation 5 controllers simultaneously within 2.5 hours. On the bottom of the PS5 charging station, there is a light that shows the charging status: a breathing light means the PS5 controllers are still charging, while a blue light indicates they are fully charged or in standby mode. You can also check the charging status via the LED indicator next to it: red means charging, green means fully charged/standby.
Sony DualSense Edge: configurable controls
For players who want more control customization, the Edge offers rear paddles, swappable sticks, trigger actuation settings, and profiles, according to the roundup. WIRED noted that replacement Stick Modules could be difficult to find at the time; check current stock and accessory compatibility before choosing it.
Storage: expand the console or archive games
WD Black SN770 M.2 SSD: internal expansion
WIRED recommended the SN770 for adding internal storage and reported speeds up to 5,100 Mbps in its 2024 testing, with little heat generated in that test. That is the reviewer’s result, not a guaranteed speed for every setup. Confirm the drive’s current specifications and that its form factor and heatsink configuration meet Sony’s PS5 requirements before installation.
WD Black P40 Gaming Drive: external storage and transfers
The P40 was WIRED’s external-drive pick for archiving games, screenshots, and recordings, and for moving games back to internal storage. In the reviewer’s testing, it was not fast enough to run some of the largest AAA games directly. External storage is therefore most useful here as an archive and transfer tool, rather than a way to play every PS5 game straight from the drive.

Play away from the TV
PlayStation Portal: a dedicated remote-play device
Portal streams games from an existing PS5; it does not run games directly. WIRED described it as simpler to set up than a phone-based option and praised its controller-like ergonomics. It is a fit for someone who wants a dedicated handheld interface for remote play, not a second standalone console.

Phone or tablet with Backbone One PS5 Edition
WIRED also points to the PS Remote Play app on a phone or tablet, paired with the Backbone One PS5 Edition controller attachment. This route uses a device you may already own, while Portal packages the screen and controls into a dedicated device. Both depend on streaming from the PS5 rather than local game playback.
Headsets and sound
SteelSeries Arctis 7P+: wireless headset
WIRED’s wireless headset pick was the Arctis 7P+. The 2024 article cited up to 30 hours of battery life and a USB-C wireless dongle usable with multiple systems. Treat those as source-era claims and verify current specifications and cross-device support for the exact model you find.

HyperX Cloud Stinger Core: budget headset
For a simpler, lower-cost headset, WIRED praised the Cloud Stinger Core’s microphone and comfort. It is the roundup’s no-frills option; compare current versions carefully, since product names and specifications can change.
Yamaha SR-C20A: compact soundbar
The SR-C20A was WIRED’s compact, lower-cost soundbar recommendation. The article does not establish its current availability, so confirm the model is still sold and check that it works with your TV or audio setup.

For a much larger audio upgrade, WIRED described the Shockwafe 9.2.4 Dolby Atmos system as including two subwoofers, a soundbar, and four surround speakers, and characterized it as very expensive. Verify the current configuration and price; this is a room-scale luxury upgrade, not an essential PS5 accessory.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Media control and console appearance
PlayStation 5 Media Remote
WIRED says the Media Remote can pair to control power and volume on most TVs and soundbars. “Most” is not universal compatibility: confirm it works with your specific equipment before purchase.
Sony PlayStation 5 Console Covers
Console covers let owners change the PS5’s appearance, but they are cosmetic. WIRED cautions that the cover must match the console version, such as Digital Edition or disc-drive model; check the exact console and cover model before ordering.
Display upgrade: Samsung S90D QD-OLED
WIRED named the Samsung S90D QD-OLED as a gaming-TV pick and said it supports up to 120 frames per second on PS5. This is a dated 2024 recommendation, not a claim that it is the best gaming TV in 2026. Compare current display models and verify the specific screen’s features, size, and compatibility with your setup.

- Seamless console compatibility - Power on your PS5 console and navigate its menus directly with the remote for ultimate convenience.
- TV settings - Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter. PS5 system software update may be required.
VR: buy for the games, not only the hardware
Sony PS VR2
WIRED praised PS VR2 hardware features including eye-tracking and Sense-controller haptics, while warning that its unique game selection was limited and future content uncertain. The practical decision is whether the games available to you justify a dedicated VR headset; skip it if the library does not fit your interests. For owners, WIRED suggested Sony’s PS VR2 Sense Controller Charging Station as a convenient way to charge the controllers.
PS VR2 PC Adapter: a separate PC use case
The PC adapter enables PS VR2 use with a Steam library, but WIRED’s reviewer reported connectivity and visual glitches in that setup. The article also notes that eye-tracking and HDR are unavailable when using the headset through the PC adapter. Those are the reviewer’s reported experience and stated feature limitations, not a claim that every PC configuration behaves identically.
