The feature by technology journalist Karl Hodge gathered games “reskinned, rebooted or remade from scratch,” spanning faithful rebuilds, presentation updates, reboots, homages and fan projects. Here are all 16, with the original article’s recommendations kept distinct from what is known about current availability.
What counts as a remake on this list?
Karl Hodge’s feature, first published on 19 December 2013 and later updated on 16 November 2021, uses “remake” broadly. Some entries rebuild an older game; others update its presentation, reinterpret its premise, or simply take inspiration from it. The descriptions and preferences below reflect that feature, not a current critical consensus or a definitive industry taxonomy. Read the original Stuff feature.
The list is best read as a snapshot of one writer’s selections, not a guide to what you can buy or play today. The current storefront evidence cited here confirms listings for only a few titles, and a listing does not guarantee access in every region or on every device.
The 16 games, and what kind of return they offer
1. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
Hodge describes the 2009 edition as a recreation of the 1990 point-and-click adventure, with hand-drawn art, a remastered soundtrack and recorded voice acting while retaining the original’s core appeal. Xbox currently lists the game, gives its release date as 15 July 2009 and says players can switch between Special Edition and Classic modes. GOG’s remake catalog also lists it. These listings do not establish regional or device availability for every reader. Xbox listing; GOG remake catalog.

2. Doom 3
This is a reboot, not a remake—a distinction Hodge makes explicitly. His entry discusses the 2004 game and its BFG Edition in the context of 2013; it should not be treated as a current platform or availability guide.
3. Legend of Grimrock
Rather than remaking Dungeon Master, Legend of Grimrock is presented as an homage that reworks gameplay and level design. It keeps grid-based movement while rendering its environments and monsters in 3D.
4. Tomb Raider: Anniversary
Hodge calls this a near-complete remake of the 1996 Tomb Raider, built on a new engine with enhanced mechanics. The official Tomb Raider games catalog includes Tomb Raider: Anniversary (2007), but that catalog entry alone does not confirm current purchase options or compatibility with modern platforms. 5. Elite: Dangerous
In the 2013 feature, Elite: Dangerous was still upcoming and described as a sequel to Elite. That entry is historical context, not a current release announcement or a statement about present access.

6. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded
The article describes this as a reworking of the Wii GoldenEye for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, featuring Daniel Craig’s likeness and voice. Its point of reference is the original 1997 Nintendo 64 game; the entry is not a present-day platform guide.
7. Black Mesa
Hodge covers Black Mesa as a fan-made Half-Life remake using Valve’s Source engine. The development status described in the old feature has since become outdated, and the current catalog search cited for this article did not verify a present listing.
8. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Hodge calls this an upgrade rather than a remake: the gameplay is preserved while the visuals are updated. That makes it a useful example of a presentation-focused revisit rather than a ground-up redesign. The article also attributed 5 million copies sold to Halo: Combat Evolved in 2013, without identifying the underlying data publisher; that historical figure is not independently verified here.
9. Prince of Persia Classic
The feature describes a 2008 rebuild of the original 2D platformer in a 3D engine, reproducing its level design. The current catalog evidence cited here does not establish whether this specific edition remains available.

Hodge characterizes the Anniversary editions as updates rather than remakes: they retain the original code and polygon graphics while enhancing them for HD, adding new sound and redrawing backgrounds. GOG’s current remake catalog lists Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition; check regional and platform access before relying on that listing. GOG remake catalog.

13. Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001)

15. Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded

“Remake” alone doesn’t tell you whether a game will feel familiar or substantially different. Check these four things before choosing an edition:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- How much of the original structure remains? Tomb Raider: Anniversary is described as a near-complete remake, while Another World: 20th Anniversary is described as an update using the original code.
- What changed besides the visuals? Monkey Island: Special Edition adds voice acting and a remastered score; Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is described as preserving gameplay while updating visuals.
- Does the control style suit you? The shift from text navigation to point-and-click controls is one of the changes Hodge notes in Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded. Platform and control fit can matter as much as graphical fidelity.
- Can you access the edition you want? Check the specific platform, edition and regional store listing. Catalog inclusion is evidence of a listing, not a promise that every player can purchase or run the game.
What the list tells you—and what it doesn’t
The feature mixes direct rebuilds with upgrades, a reboot, a spiritual homage and a fan-made mash-up. It also includes games that were still described as upcoming when Hodge wrote their entries, notably Elite: Dangerous and Oddworld: New ’n’ Tasty. Treat those details as a record of the article’s moment in time, not as current release information.
For current access, the evidence cited here verifies listings for The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition, among others, on GOG’s remake catalog, and a listing for Monkey Island: Special Edition on Xbox. Store catalogs change, and these pages do not establish availability on every platform or in every region.
