What does “120 FPS Android games” mean?
FPS is how many frames a game renders each second; Hz is how often a display can refresh. A 120Hz screen can show up to 120 refreshes per second, but a game may render fewer frames. The phone’s display mode, the game’s support, and system conditions all affect the result.
Android Developers says that “Android 15 sets a default 60Hz refresh rate for games to optimize power consumption.” Games must explicitly request a higher frame rate, and the device must expose a suitable display mode. The system can still constrain refresh because of power or thermal conditions. Android Developers’ frame-pacing guidance, updated February 26, 2026, explains these requirements.
Which games did the historical list label as high-FPS?
The article titled “165+ Best 120FPS Android Games 2020 with 120Hz Display” reports a modification date of April 19, 2024. It labels Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey as 120 FPS, and Brawl Stars as 90 FPS. These are examples of what that dated list claimed; they are not current, device-specific confirmations. Other lists from the period also need to be read in context. Beebom’s June 15, 2020 roundup says most games were tested on a OnePlus 7 Pro and notes that its Game Mode could revert the screen to 60Hz; it advised readers to check the phone’s refresh-rate setting. It also named the OnePlus 8 Pro and ASUS ROG Phone 2 as 120Hz phones. Those are observations about that period, not instructions confirmed for current software. Beebom’s 2020 list.
Android Authority’s ROG Phone 2 roundup, updated November 1, 2019, included Alto’s Adventure, Alto’s Odyssey, and Temple Run 2. It later removed Sky Force Reloaded because the game no longer supported the higher refresh rate. That change illustrates why old compatibility lists can become inaccurate. How to check whether a game runs at 90 or 120 FPS on your phone
Check the specific game-and-phone combination rather than relying on the screen specification or an old list. For a useful comparison, record:
- Display mode: Whether the phone offers 90Hz or 120Hz and whether that mode is enabled.
- Game option and behavior: Whether the game offers a high-frame-rate setting on your device and whether it actually runs at the target rate.
- Conditions over time: Whether the phone sustains the rate during play; heat or power conditions can lead Android to constrain refresh.
- Test details: Game version, phone model, Android version, settings, and test date. Without those details, an FPS claim is hard to apply to another setup.
A 120Hz-capable phone establishes only that the display can refresh at that rate; it does not establish support in a particular game. Likewise, a game’s high-FPS behavior on one phone does not prove it will behave the same way on another.

Why can a game on a 120Hz phone still run below 120 FPS?
Android 15’s 60Hz default for games means a game needs to request a higher rate rather than relying on the display specification alone. The phone also has to expose the requested mode. Even when both conditions are met, power-saving settings and temperature can affect the rate the system allows. Targeting a consistently high frame rate can also increase heat and battery use.
Older game lists are snapshots, not evergreen promises. Games change, and support can disappear, as Sky Force Reloaded’s removal from Android Authority’s ROG Phone 2 list demonstrates. The cited historical lists do not establish which titles currently offer 90 or 120 FPS, where they remain available, or how they behave on currently sold phones.

What can you conclude from the “165+” list?
Use it as a starting point for games that were reported as high-refresh candidates in an earlier period, not as a definitive list of what works now. To answer “What Android games support 120 fps?” for your setup, verify the title’s current options and performance on your exact phone. The available historical sources do not identify a currently best 120Hz gaming phone or provide a current, authoritative game-by-game compatibility matrix.
