How to choose a game that feels relaxing to you
Before picking a title, consider which pressures you want to avoid. A game may have no combat but still involve timers, deadlines, stamina, difficult puzzles, or a long list of objectives. Conversely, a game with a clear goal can feel calming when its pace and challenge suit you.
- Timers and deadlines: Look for open-ended play or modes that do not end a run when you make a mistake.
- Failure and penalties: Consider whether a missed jump, wrong placement, or lost round sets you back.
- Threats and combat: Exploration and creative modes can offer a gentler alternative to fighting or survival.
- Optimization and grinding: Collection and progression can be satisfying, but may feel like chores if you try to complete everything efficiently.
- Session shape: Choose between a short, contained experience and an open-ended game you can return to over time.
PlayStation’s wellbeing guide similarly groups some games around meditation, exploration, and creativity, including Caravan SandWitch as exploration without combat or death and Minecraft Creative mode as a place to build. Nintendo Mexico’s October 11, 2021 roundup features Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Stardew Valley, and A Short Hike. These are recommendations, not evidence that any game treats stress or will feel calming to every player.
Open-ended life and exploration
Stardew Valley
Farm, fish, brew, or spend time talking with the townspeople; the game gives you several low-key ways to use a day. The main caveat is self-imposed pressure: trying to optimize the farm for maximum efficiency can make the routine feel overwhelming rather than restful.

Roam through a provincial park, take on light errands, and choose when to climb, glide, or simply wander. Its freedom to explore makes it a natural option for a brief outing rather than a game that asks you to manage a demanding routine.
