The best legitimate places to get free PC games are Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, itch.io, Microsoft Store, official publisher launchers, and selected browser or creator portals. But “free” can mean several different things: a permanently free-to-play game, a limited-time giveaway, DRM-free freeware, a Prime membership benefit, a browser game, or a creator-uploaded project. This guide separates those categories and explains what to check before downloading.
What does free mean here?
- Free-to-play: You can install and play the base game without paying, although optional purchases, battle passes, subscriptions, or expansions may be available.
- Limited-time giveaway: You claim a game during a promotion. The redemption and future access rules depend on the platform.
- Membership access: A service such as Prime Gaming may require an active membership even when the individual claimed game costs nothing extra.
- DRM-free freeware or classic: The game or digital item can be downloaded without the usual copy-protection software. Check whether the listing is a full game rather than DLC, a demo, soundtrack, mod, or extra.
- Browser game: You play immediately in a browser instead of downloading a conventional installer.
- Indie or creator-uploaded project: The platform may host work from individual developers. Check the creator, operating-system support, file type, license, and installation instructions before opening a download.
The safest places to get free PC games are official storefronts and publisher pages: Steam for a broad free-to-play catalog, Epic Games Store for recurring giveaways, GOG for DRM-free classics and freeware, and itch.io for independent projects. The list below also includes Windows and publisher stores, Prime Gaming, downloadable portals, and browser-first services.

They are not equivalent. Some provide a normal PC installer, some require a launcher or membership, some offer a game only for a limited claim period, and some are primarily for playing in a browser. Each entry is labeled so you can choose the right source without mistaking a browser portal or mod repository for a conventional game store.

| Mods and total conversions | Mod DB, IndieDB | Many downloads require another game and are not standalone games. |

The 17 best legitimate websites for free PC games
1. Epic Games Store — best for recurring giveaways and free-to-play games
Format: PC downloads, free-to-play games, and limited-time giveaways.

Epic is one of the best places to check if you want to claim free games over time. Its official free-games page states that a new free game is offered every Thursday. A promotion can expire, however, so check the page before assuming that a particular title is still claimable. A claimed game may remain associated with your Epic account under the promotion’s terms, but claiming it is not the same as downloading it immediately.
Epic also has a substantial free-to-play catalog. The trade-off is that you generally need an Epic account and the Epic Games launcher for PC installation. Availability, regional restrictions, and the conditions attached to each giveaway can change, so use the live listing rather than an old deal article.
2. Steam — best for the broadest mainstream free-to-play catalog
Format: PC downloads, primarily through the Steam client.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Its official filter covers thousands of free-to-play listings, including large multiplayer games, smaller releases, and titles with optional in-game purchases.
Free-to-play does not mean every feature is free or that the game contains no paid items. Before installing, read the store page for system requirements, online-service requirements, in-game purchases, and regional availability. You will normally need a Steam account and the Steam client, and some games may also install or require a publisher-specific launcher.
3. GOG — best for DRM-free classics, freeware, and selected indie games
Format: DRM-free downloads, with some items optionally managed through GOG Galaxy.
GOG’s free-games section is useful when you want a downloadable game without mandatory digital-rights-management software. It includes selected freeware, classic games, demos, mods, and other free digital items. That variety is also the main source of confusion: a free listing may be DLC, a soundtrack, a demo, an extra, or a mod rather than a complete standalone game.
Recommended Free Tools
Open the individual product page and confirm that it is a full game, that Windows is supported, and whether any installation instructions or dependencies apply. GOG’s catalog as a whole is not free; only the products marked accordingly are available at no charge.
4. itch.io — best for free indie and experimental projects
Format: Windows downloads, browser play, and projects for other operating systems.
itch.io’s free-games catalog is particularly good for game jams, prototypes, experimental releases, small independent games, and unusual projects that may not appear in major storefronts. Many pages offer a Windows download, while others are browser-only or support macOS, Linux, or multiple platforms.
Because creators upload projects at enormous scale, treat each page as an individual recommendation rather than assuming the whole platform has identical standards. Inspect the developer page, release notes, operating-system label, file type, installation instructions, comments, and permissions requested by the program. A project’s “free” price also does not automatically tell you whether it is open-source, freely redistributable, or licensed for modification.

Format: Windows downloads through the Microsoft Store.
Microsoft maintains a top-free PC games section, making the Microsoft Store a convenient option when you want a Windows-focused discovery path. Microsoft support also describes the store as offering many free-to-download and free-to-play games.

The store can simplify installation and updates on supported Windows versions, but the exact account, age, region, device, and system requirements still depend on the title. Read the listing carefully to distinguish a free game from a free trial, add-on, companion app, or game with optional purchases.
6. Ubisoft Store and Ubisoft Connect — best for Ubisoft’s own free-to-play catalog
Format: Publisher downloads, usually connected to Ubisoft Connect.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The Ubisoft Store and Ubisoft Connect are the appropriate official channels for Ubisoft’s free-to-play offerings and publisher promotions. They are preferable to third-party pages that claim to provide Ubisoft installers because the official route gives you the publisher’s account and installation path.
Requirements vary by title. You may need a Ubisoft account, Ubisoft Connect, and sometimes another platform account or launcher. Check the live product page for the current PC catalog, region, age requirements, online requirements, and whether the offer is permanent, promotional, or tied to a specific event.
7. EA — best for EA’s official free-to-play offerings
Format: PC downloads through the EA app or a specified platform.
EA’s official games pages are the safest place to find its free-to-play PC offerings. Some EA games require the EA app, while others may be discovered or launched through another storefront but still connect to an EA account.

8. Amazon Prime Gaming — best for Prime members who want claimable games
Format: Claimable PC games and in-game content, delivered through different redemption platforms.
Prime Gaming can be valuable if you already have an eligible Amazon Prime membership. Amazon says its offers may be delivered through GOG, Epic Games Store, Legacy Games, or the Amazon Games app, so the platform you use is determined by the individual offer. You do not necessarily install every claimed game through Amazon itself.
This is membership access, not a promise that the benefit remains available after the membership ends. Read the claim instructions, note the deadline, and check whether the redemption code or account link is limited to a particular country. Prime Gaming also offers in-game content, which is different from receiving a complete PC game.
9. Kongregate — best as a free online-game portal
Format: Browser games, with a separate area for downloadable games.
Kongregate is better understood as a game portal than as a major PC storefront. Its strength is free online play, and it also has a downloadable-games area. Before downloading a particular file, confirm that the page still supports desktop play, identify the file type, and follow the creator or publisher’s instructions.
Do not assume that every game on a portal has the same installation method. A browser title may need no installation at all, while a downloadable project may have separate requirements or may no longer be maintained.

10. CrazyGames — best for playing immediately in a browser
Format: Browser-first games; not primarily a download store.
CrazyGames is a useful choice when the goal is to play on a desktop or laptop without installing a conventional PC game. Its value is immediate browser play, not a library of downloadable installers.
Use the site as a browser-game service and do not treat a page that asks you to install an unexpected executable as part of the normal browser experience. Browser games can still use advertising, cookies, account features, or browser permissions, so review prompts and avoid allowing notifications you do not want.
11. Newgrounds — best for browser games and creator projects
Format: Primarily browser play, with downloadable desktop projects varying by creator and listing.
Newgrounds is a creator-focused portal with a long history of browser games and independent projects. It belongs on this list as a place to discover free games, but it should not be described as a uniform download store.
For any specific recommendation, verify that the project is currently available for desktop, identify whether it runs in the browser or supplies a Windows file, and inspect the creator’s page and installation notes. The exact catalog and delivery method can change, and not every project is a standalone commercial-quality PC game.
12. Armor Games — best for free online games and selected free premium content
Format: Browser games, with selected downloadable or free premium titles depending on the current catalog.
Armor Games is primarily a free online-game portal. It can also feature selected free premium content, but the installation method and access terms must be checked on the individual page.
Choose the browser option when available, and treat any executable download as a separate installation decision. Confirm the developer, file type, supported operating system, and whether the game is genuinely free, a demo, an offer, or connected to an account or promotion.
13. Game Jolt — best for independent and fan-created PC projects
Format: Creator-uploaded PC projects, browser games, and other community content.
Game Jolt can help you find independent games, fan-created projects, prototypes, and community releases. It is useful for discovery, but the project page—not the platform name alone—should determine whether a download is appropriate.
Before installing, check the project’s creator identity, release history, license or permission information, operating-system support, archive or installer type, comments, and required dependencies. Fan-created does not necessarily mean officially licensed, and “free” does not guarantee that a project is safe, supported, or standalone.
14. IndieDB — best for discovering independent games, prototypes, freeware, and mods
Format: Discovery and download portal for independent projects and modifications.

- Play Longer : With 60-90 hours battery life and LIGHTSPEED Wireless, this rechargeable gaming mouse(with included USB-A to USB-C cable) delivers lag-free 8 kHz polling for uninterrupted focus
IndieDB is useful for finding independent PC projects, prototypes, freeware, and mods. It is not a guarantee that every listing is a finished game or that every download works independently of another title.
Read the project description and release notes before downloading. Look for the supported operating system, version number, required base game, developer contact or profile, and installation method. A project that has not been updated recently may still be legitimate, but it may require older software or troubleshooting.
15. Mod DB — best for mods, total conversions, and fan-made releases
Format: Mods, total conversions, standalone projects, and other community downloads.
Mod DB is a strong source for free modifications and fan-made releases. Its most important limitation is that many downloads are not games in the ordinary sense: they modify an existing game and require a legally obtained copy of that base game.
Check the project’s requirements, supported version, installation instructions, archive contents, and recent comments. A total conversion may substantially change the experience, but it can still depend on the original game’s files or engine. Never download a purported mod that bundles an unauthorized copy of a commercial game.
16. Riot Games — best for Riot’s official free-to-play PC ecosystem
Format: Official publisher downloads through Riot’s account and launcher ecosystem.
Riot Games distributes its official free-to-play PC games through its own account and launcher system. Use Riot’s website or a link from the relevant official game page rather than a third-party installer or “launcher download” mirror.
The current PC catalog, account requirements, age rules, system requirements, and regional availability can differ by title and country. Free-to-play also means that optional purchases may be present. Verify those details on the live game page before downloading.
17. Battle.net — best for official Blizzard and Activision free-to-play offerings
Format: PC downloads through the Battle.net launcher.
Battle.net is the official distribution channel for eligible Blizzard and Activision PC offerings. It is relevant when a free-to-play title requires the Battle.net launcher, an account, or both.
Catalogs, regions, account requirements, and platform policies change. Check the current Battle.net listing for the title you want, confirm that the base game is free rather than a free trial or add-on, and review the system requirements and optional-purchase information before installation.

A free price does not make an unfamiliar download trustworthy. The Federal Trade Commission’s malware guidance warns consumers about deceptive downloads and advises caution with unfamiliar websites and peer-to-peer file-sharing sources. Use this process for every installer:
Recommended Free Tools
- Begin at the official domain. Type the storefront or publisher address yourself, use a saved bookmark, or follow a link from the publisher’s official website. Do not rely on a search advertisement or a random “free download” result.
- Check the domain and download path. Make sure the address is the expected company domain and that the button leads to the store client, publisher launcher, or clearly identified installer you intended to obtain.
- Identify the offer type. Confirm whether the item is free-to-play, freeware, a demo, a limited-time giveaway, a Prime benefit, browser play, DLC, or a mod requiring another game.
- Read the listing before clicking Install. Check the supported Windows version, storage space, processor and graphics requirements, account requirements, launcher requirements, online connection, and optional purchases.
- Inspect creator-uploaded projects more closely. On itch.io, Game Jolt, IndieDB, Mod DB, Newgrounds, and similar portals, review the developer profile, release notes, file extension, comments, license information, and required permissions.
- Keep security controls enabled. Update Windows, your browser, and reputable security software. Scan an unexpected installer or archive before opening it.
- Do not obey suspicious security instructions. A game installer should not require you to disable antivirus protection, Windows security features, or browser protections merely to run it. Stop if it demands that change without a clear, verifiable reason.
- Watch for bundles and notifications. Decline unrelated bundled software and do not allow browser notifications unless you specifically want them. Be especially skeptical of fake download buttons and “required codec” prompts.
No storefront or upload platform should be described as completely malware-proof. Official storefronts and publisher pages are preferable because they provide clearer provenance, account controls, support, and platform-specific installation paths—not because they eliminate every possible risk.

What to check when a free game will not install
The download button opens a different launcher
This is common with publisher games and Prime Gaming claims. Confirm which account owns the game, install the launcher named on the official page, and sign in with the account used for redemption. Do not download a similarly named launcher from a third-party site.
The game says it is unavailable in your region
Regional availability can apply to giveaways, Prime Gaming claims, publisher catalogs, and online services. Do not bypass the restriction with an unknown code seller or unofficial installer. Check the storefront’s regional listing and the publisher’s support information.
An archive contains no obvious installer
It may be a mod, source project, portable game, or browser asset rather than a normal installer. Return to the project page and read the release notes. If it requires another game, use only a legally obtained copy of that game and follow the project’s documented installation process.
Windows or antivirus warns about the file
Do not automatically dismiss the warning and do not disable protection just because the download is free. Verify the source, publisher, file name, digital signature where available, release notes, and community reports. If the provenance remains unclear, delete the file and choose an official alternative.
The game runs poorly or fills the drive
Compare the computer with the store page’s requirements, including storage and graphics requirements. Remove unused launchers or games through their normal uninstallers, keep adequate free disk space, and avoid downloading “performance booster” files from unofficial pages. A cleanup tool is optional and cannot replace proper malware protection or hardware limitations.
How to choose among the 17 sites
- Choose Steam when you want the widest mainstream free-to-play selection and are comfortable using the Steam client.
- Choose Epic when you want to check recurring giveaways or browse another major free-to-play catalog.
- Choose GOG when DRM-free distribution and older PC games matter more than having every new multiplayer release.
- Choose itch.io when you want independent, experimental, game-jam, or creator-led projects and are willing to inspect each download.
- Choose Microsoft Store when you prefer a Windows-native storefront and installation path.
- Choose Ubisoft, EA, Riot, or Battle.net when the publisher’s own catalog or launcher is the relevant source.
- Choose Prime Gaming if you already have an eligible Prime membership and are willing to redeem through the platform specified for each offer.
- Choose CrazyGames, Kongregate, Newgrounds, or Armor Games when you mainly want browser play without a conventional installation.
- Choose Game Jolt, IndieDB, or Mod DB for community projects, prototypes, freeware, mods, and total conversions—but investigate the individual project and its dependencies.
Bottom line
Start with official storefronts and publishers. Steam is the simplest broad starting point for free-to-play PC games; Epic is the one to check for recurring giveaways; GOG is the specialist choice for DRM-free classics and freeware; itch.io is strongest for free indie projects; and Microsoft Store is convenient for Windows-focused discovery. Ubisoft, EA, Riot, and Battle.net are appropriate when the publisher’s own ecosystem distributes the game. Prime Gaming is useful for existing Prime members, while CrazyGames and the other portals are best labeled as browser or creator-project destinations.
The central rule is more important than any individual website: use the official domain, verify what kind of free offer you are receiving, and avoid cracks, key generators, repacks, torrents, unauthorized ROM sites, and unfamiliar pages promising newly released commercial games at no cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest website to download free PC games?
The most reliable starting points are official storefronts and publisher pages such as Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Microsoft Store, EA, Ubisoft, Riot Games, and Battle.net. These sites provide clearer file provenance and the correct launcher or installation path. No platform should be considered completely malware-proof, so still check the domain, listing, installer, and security warnings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre free PC games really free?
Not always. Free-to-play games can contain optional purchases, battle passes, subscriptions, or expansions. A giveaway may be available only during a claim period, and Prime Gaming benefits are tied to an eligible membership. Browser games, demos, DLC, mods, and soundtracks may also be listed as free without being complete standalone games.
Can I download games from browser-game websites?
No. CrazyGames is primarily for playing in a browser, and Kongregate, Newgrounds, and Armor Games are also mainly portals for online games. Some listings on those services may offer downloads, but check each game’s installation method instead of assuming that every title provides a Windows installer.
Are games on Mod DB and IndieDB standalone?
A mod changes or extends another game and often requires a legally obtained copy of that game. Mod DB and IndieDB host many such projects. Read the project requirements and installation instructions before downloading, and do not treat a mod as a standalone game unless the page explicitly says that it is.
What should I do if Windows warns me about a free game installer?
Do not disable antivirus or Windows security features simply because an installer requests it. Verify the source and file, review the developer information and release notes, scan the file with reputable security software, and abandon the download if its provenance remains unclear.

For the safest route, use official storefronts and publisher launchers: Steam for free-to-play games, Epic for recurring giveaways, GOG for DRM-free freeware and classics, itch.io for indie projects, and Microsoft Store for Windows-native discovery.
