The game is for Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo’s tips cover both race fundamentals and exploration in Free Roam.
Start with the basic race boosts
1. Time a Rocket Start
When the countdown shows 2, press and hold A. A Rocket Start gives you an early burst; practise the timing in a low-pressure race until it feels natural. Nintendo’s beginner tips describe this input.
2. Collect coins without abandoning your line
Coins raise your kart’s maximum speed for that course, and you can carry up to 20. Pick them up when they fit your route, but do not assume a risky detour is worth it just because it leads to a coin.
3. Learn to drift around corners
Hold R and steer into a corner with the Left Stick. Drifting is a core skill, so get comfortable with it before making advanced shortcuts your priority.

- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
4. Hold a drift to build a stronger Mini-Turbo
Keeping the drift going longer produces a bigger Mini-Turbo boost. Start by holding a controlled drift through a corner, then release when you are ready to take the boost.
5. Draft when you are trailing another racer
Stay directly behind another driver for a few seconds to build a draft and trigger a quick boost. It is a useful way to regain momentum when you are following someone, rather than a reason to tailgate through every turn.
6. Press R as you leave a ramp
Use R at the edge of a ramp to perform a Jump Boost, also called a trick. It gives you a boost when you land.

Choose controls and assists that help you learn
These options are personal preferences, not a single best setup. To find them, press X while selecting a kart, or pause with + or – during a mode and press X to open Settings/Controller. Nintendo Support lists per-player controls including Smart Steering, Auto-Accelerate, Auto-Use Items, Tilt Controls, camera orientation, the minimap, Dash Food behavior, and music volume. See Nintendo’s control-settings instructions.

7. Use Smart Steering as a learning aid
Smart Steering can make it easier to drive without falling off the course. Consider turning it on if staying on the track is still a challenge.
8. Know what Smart Steering changes about Mini-Turbo
With Smart Steering on, Mini-Turbo has two power levels. Turning it off makes a third level available. You can try racing without it when you feel ready to work on stronger boosts.

9. Turn on Auto-Accelerate if holding A is uncomfortable
Auto-Accelerate makes your kart accelerate automatically during races. It is a comfort option; Nintendo does not present it as a performance improvement.
10. Decide whether to use items automatically
Auto-Use Items can handle item use for you, with timing that depends on the item. Leave it off if you want to choose when to use items yourself.

11. Use tilt controls only if they suit you
Tilt Controls require a controller that supports motion controls. Nintendo recommends them with a Joy-Con 2 Wheel, but stick steering remains an option if motion steering does not feel comfortable.

12. Keep the minimap visible while learning routes
The minimap shows an outline of the course and can help you build a sense of where the route goes. You can turn it off if you prefer a less cluttered screen.

13. Practise Charge Jump on a straight
While driving straight, hold A and then hold R until sparks appear. Tilt the Left Stick in the direction you want to hop, then release R. A straight gives you room to learn the timing before adding corners or obstacles.
14. Try rail riding when the route offers a narrow surface
Handrails and powerlines are examples of surfaces you can ride. A Charge Jump can help you get onto one when it appears along your route.
Best Value

- Experience intense 24-driver elimination races in Knockout Tour mode, where racers compete checkpoint by checkpoint until one champion remains.
- Master new racing techniques including rail riding, wall jumping, and water skimming to find the fastest route to victory.
- Explore the vast world at your own pace in Free Roam mode, discovering hidden surprises and alternate paths.

15. Learn wall riding as an optional technique
Face a wall, then use a Jump Boost or Charge Jump into it to ride along the wall. Treat it as an extra movement option, not something you need to master before you can enjoy a race.
16. Chain movement only after each part feels comfortable
Nintendo describes combining Charge Jumps, walls, and rails. Experiment with those combinations once the individual moves make sense; there is no need to master a chain on your first outing.
Use Free Roam to explore and practise
17. Use the map to find places and collectibles
In Free Roam, press Y to open the map. It can show character and course information; selecting a character or location lets you warp there. Use it to explore at your own pace or locate something specific.
18. Use Rewind to recover and experiment
Nintendo says Rewind is useful in Free Roam and can also be used during a P Switch mission. If you want to practise a movement or try different character and vehicle combinations, use the mode’s menu options to explore without treating every attempt like a scored race.

What to expect when playing multiplayer
Nintendo Support’s documented lobby flow for Race, Knockout Tour, and Battle puts players in Free Roam while they wait for others. Players then select courses or a Knockout Tour, and the game chooses from the submitted options. This describes the documented flow, not a guarantee that every online session will proceed identically. See Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions.
Check the current game version if a feature behaves differently
Nintendo’s update history records changes and fixes affecting Free Roam, Knockout Tour, and race behavior. If you are troubleshooting a current feature or possible bug, check Nintendo’s Mario Kart World update instructions and history rather than relying on an older description. The game is a Nintendo Switch 2 title.
