The best free Mac games in this list have a current official Mac route: a native or Universal client, an Intel Mac version that can run through Rosetta, an Apple-silicon Mac App Store version, or a maintained open-source macOS download. They are not all compatible in the same way.
This updates the original 2025 topic for current availability. Each recommendation is labeled by Mac architecture, free model, internet requirement, and download source so you can avoid confusing an Apple-silicon-only iPad app with an Intel-compatible Mac game.

Quick picks: the best free Mac games by category
If you want a short answer, start with 0 A.D. or OpenTTD for offline strategy, League of Legends or Brawlhalla for competitive play, Albion Online for a modern MMO, Hearthstone for a card game, and Luanti for open-ended sandbox play.
For the clearest current hardware documentation, the strongest all-around choices are 0 A.D., OpenTTD, Albion Online, EVE Online, Roblox, Hearthstone, League of Legends, and Path of Exile. Older Intel Macs need more caution: Apple identifies macOS Tahoe as the final macOS release for Intel Macs, while Rosetta’s role will become more limited in later macOS versions. See Apple’s Rosetta guidance and macOS compatibility information.

Compatibility key
- Explicit: The publisher or project specifically lists the relevant Intel or Apple-silicon hardware.
- Mac client: An official Mac listing exists, but the source does not establish that every Intel Mac or Apple-silicon binary is supported.
- Rosetta: The Mac application is Intel-based and uses Apple’s translation layer on an M1 or M2 Mac.
- M1+ only: The Mac version requires Apple silicon and does not support Intel Macs.
- Verify: A Mac download exists, but the current architecture or exact binary route needs checking before installation.
20 free Mac games: compatibility and download guide
“Free” does not always mean completely free. F2P means free-to-play with optional purchases, subscriptions, advertising, or premium currency. Open source means the project is freely distributed under an open-source license and generally does not use paid progression.

Best competitive games
1. League of Legends — best competitive MOBA for most Macs
League of Legends remains the easiest recommendation for players who want a major competitive game with a current Mac client. Riot’s published requirements include Intel hardware and Apple M1 hardware, although its minimum macOS and Metal requirements have changed over time and should be rechecked before publication or installation.
It is free to play, with optional purchases, and requires a persistent internet connection. Its main drawback is not the price but the learning curve: competitive matches, a large champion roster, and a constantly changing balance make it demanding for beginners. Treat the Mac client as officially supported rather than automatically native Apple silicon; check the installed application’s architecture if native performance matters.
2. Dota 2 — deepest free MOBA
Dota 2 is the choice for players who want a more complex MOBA with a huge strategic ceiling. The official Steam page provides a Mac route, but Apple-silicon users should not assume that route is native. If the installed application is Intel-only, it will depend on Rosetta.
Dota 2 is completely free to start and is permanently online. It is less beginner-friendly than many competitive games, and match length and system complexity can be substantial. Check the current Steam Mac icon and requirements rather than relying on an old compatibility list.
3. Brawlhalla — best lightweight platform fighter
Brawlhalla offers free platform fighting with short matches, a large cast, and cross-platform multiplayer. Steam identifies Mac support, making it a convenient download for Mac users who already have Steam installed.
The game is a better fit than a demanding 3D fighter for older or modest Macs, but no universal frame-rate claim should be made. Mac-specific updates and the current architecture can change, so confirm the live Steam requirements. Optional purchases are primarily part of its free-to-play model.
4. Hearthstone — best free digital card game
Hearthstone is a polished option for players who prefer turn-based matches and short sessions. Blizzard provides an official Battle.net Mac client and lists Intel Mac requirements. On an M1 or M2 Mac, check whether the installed client is Intel-based and allow macOS to install Rosetta if prompted.
The base game is free to play, but the collection system and competitive environment can encourage spending on packs or other purchases. It is best described as free-to-play rather than completely free. Most meaningful play requires an internet connection.
Best MMOs and persistent worlds
5. EVE Online — best for a player-driven space economy
EVE Online is unusually ambitious for a free Mac game. It combines space combat, corporations, trading, exploration, and a player-run economy. CCP’s current requirements list macOS Big Sur 11 or later, an Intel i5 or Apple M1 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 23 GB of storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe free Alpha account provides a substantial way to play, but Omega is a paid membership with broader access and progression. Ordinary missions and exploration are not equivalent to major fleet battles: large-scale encounters can require considerably more headroom than the minimum specification suggests. EVE is always online and has one of the steepest learning curves on this list.
6. Albion Online — best modern cross-platform MMO for Mac
Albion Online is one of the clearest recommendations for both Intel and Apple-silicon Macs. Its official download page explicitly supports macOS, Apple silicon, and Intel Macs with Metal-capable GPUs. The current minimum requirement listed by the developer is macOS 13 Ventura and 4 GB of RAM, which excludes some older Intel machines.
The game is a sandbox MMO with gathering, crafting, economics, PvP, and class flexibility based on equipment rather than a permanently fixed class. It is free to download and play, while Premium and Gold are optional purchases. An SSD is advisable where available because the game is a persistent online world with regular updates.
7. RuneScape — best long-term MMO progression
RuneScape is a strong choice if you want a game that can occupy months or years without requiring fast reflexes. Its free-to-play core includes skills, quests, and a large world; membership unlocks additional areas, skills, and content, so it should not be described as the entire game being free.

The important Mac qualification is the launcher. As of the current 2026 information, the Mac Jagex Launcher is Intel-based and uses Rosetta on Apple silicon. Jagex says a native version is planned before macOS 28. That makes RuneScape playable on many M1 and M2 Macs today, but Rosetta is a compatibility bridge rather than a permanent guarantee.
8. Old School RuneScape — best low-spec classic MMO
Old School RuneScape uses the classic version of the game and is usually the better fit for players who prefer slower progression, a retro interface, and a community built around an older ruleset. It has a substantial free section, while membership expands the available world and activities.
Use the official site or Jagex Launcher, not an unofficial download. The same architecture caveat applies as with modern RuneScape: the current Mac launcher is Intel-based and therefore uses Rosetta on M1 and M2 Macs until Jagex delivers the planned native version.
Best casual, social, and racing games
9. Roblox — best platform for variety
Roblox is a platform containing thousands of user-created experiences rather than one conventional game. That makes it the broadest casual recommendation here: players can find obstacle courses, social spaces, racing games, survival modes, shooters, and experiments in almost every genre.
Roblox officially supports macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later, but that does not mean every experience will perform the same way. Each creation has its own graphics, controls, scripts, and server quality. The platform is free, although individual experiences can sell items or premium currency. Most experiences are online.
10. Among Us — best social deduction game on Apple silicon
Among Us is a simple, effective party game about identifying impostors among a crew. It is free on the Mac App Store, with advertising and in-app purchases.
It is also the most important compatibility trap on this list. The Mac App Store listing requires macOS 11 or later and a Mac with an M1 chip or later. It is therefore not an Intel-Mac recommendation, even though the listing appears in the Mac App Store. Because the Mac version is an iPad-designed app, check keyboard, mouse, and controller behavior before assuming it feels like a traditional Mac game.
11. Asphalt Legends — best free arcade racer
Asphalt Legends brings arcade racing, licensed cars, stunts, and controller support to the Mac App Store. The listing specifies macOS 12 or later and an 8.2 GB download, so it needs more storage than the smallest strategy games here.
It is free to play but includes in-app purchases, including paid random items. The Mac listing confirms a Mac version but does not establish blanket Intel and M1/M2 equivalence. Confirm compatibility with the exact Mac before downloading, especially if you use an Intel model.
Best free and open-source strategy games
12. 0 A.D. — best free real-time strategy game
0 A.D. is the safest open-source choice for players who want a traditional historical real-time strategy game without a paid storefront or free-to-play economy. You gather resources, build settlements, research technologies, and command armies across ancient civilizations.
The official download page separately lists Intel Macs on macOS 10.15 or later and M1 Macs on macOS 11 or later. It also lists at least 4 GB of storage and support for 2006-or-later Intel Macs or M1-based Macs. The game works offline and supports multiplayer, although very large battles can be more demanding than the minimum requirements suggest.
13. OpenTTD — best transport and business simulator
OpenTTD is a free, open-source expansion of the classic transport-management formula. You build railways, roads, shipping routes, and air networks while competing with the demands of a growing map and economy. It is excellent for offline play and can also support multiplayer.

The current official release page lists macOS 10.14+ and 11+ routes for Intel and Apple silicon, along with disk-image and ZIP downloads. The page lists stable release 15.3, released April 4, 2026, and provides OpenGFX as a free replacement graphics set.
There is an important 2026 Steam change: the Steam distribution now requires purchasing the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe alongside OpenTTD. If you want a genuinely free installation, download OpenTTD from the official website instead of Steam. Open the downloaded .dmg, copy the application to Applications, launch it, and allow it to obtain the free OpenGFX base graphics if prompted.
14. The Battle for Wesnoth — best turn-based fantasy strategy game
The Battle for Wesnoth is a campaign-driven, turn-based fantasy strategy game with a large collection of official and community scenarios. Its combat rewards positioning, terrain awareness, unit development, and careful use of time rather than fast mouse movement.

The official download page lists stable version 1.18.7 for macOS 10.12 and later, and the project has documented Apple-silicon support. Prefer the stable 1.18 branch for normal play. Version 1.19 is development software and may introduce bugs; multiplayer and add-ons should use matching versions.

Freeciv is a free, open-source 4X strategy game inspired by the classic Civilization formula. You lead a civilization through exploration, settlement, research, diplomacy, production, and war. It is a good choice for players who want a slower, systems-heavy game rather than a graphical showcase.
The project is active and identifies stable version 3.2.5, released July 10, 2026. Because the project’s homepage does not by itself establish a single current Mac binary path or architecture for every release, verify the exact macOS download before installation. Once installed, Freeciv can be played offline or through multiplayer.
Best sandbox, action, and lightweight multiplayer projects
16. Luanti — best open-source voxel sandbox platform
Luanti is not one single Minecraft-style campaign. It is an open-source voxel engine and platform containing multiple games, mods, and worlds. You can download content from inside the client, then play solo, locally, or online depending on the selected game.
The official site lists macOS support and identifies version 5.16.1, released May 10, 2026. Its flexibility is the attraction: one installation can provide building games, survival experiences, creative worlds, and heavily modded projects. Performance depends substantially on the selected game and world, so do not treat the platform’s macOS support as a guarantee that every mod runs equally well.
Recommended Free Tools
17. Hedgewars — best free artillery game
Hedgewars is a turn-based artillery game in the tradition of destructible-terrain combat. Teams of cartoon hedgehogs use unusual weapons, deform the landscape, and try to eliminate one another locally or online.
The official download page lists a 64-bit macOS build and macOS 10.8 or later, but the latest official release shown is 1.0.0. It is therefore useful as a lightweight legacy recommendation, not an equivalent to a frequently updated native Apple-silicon game. Intel users have the clearest route; M1 and M2 users should expect to verify the build and possibly use Rosetta.
18. Teeworlds — best for lightweight 2D multiplayer
Teeworlds is a fast 2D online multiplayer game built around grappling hooks, weapons, movement, and compact arenas. It can be appealing on older hardware because of its modest visual style and short matches.
The official download page lists a Mac OS X Universal Binary, but the page is old and identifies version 0.5.2. That age matters: a downloadable Mac file is not proof of reliable operation on current macOS versions or of modern Apple-silicon support. Treat Teeworlds as a legacy experiment and verify it on your Mac before making it a primary choice.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →19. Xonotic — best open-source arena shooter
Xonotic is a free, open-source arena FPS focused on fast movement, weapons, maps, and multiplayer combat. The official download page lists the current 0.8.6 release for macOS x86-64.
That architecture makes it a straightforward fit for Intel Macs but not a native Apple-silicon recommendation. M1 and M2 users may be able to run the x86-64 build through Rosetta, but Xonotic’s requirements do not promise native ARM support. Use the project’s FAQ and current download notes if the launcher or graphics fail.
20. Path of Exile — best free loot-driven action RPG
Path of Exile deserves a second look even if you are choosing from the table by genre rather than rank. It combines dark fantasy, randomized loot, deep character customization, and a huge passive skill tree. The official Steam page lists macOS support and gives a Mac minimum of macOS 10.13, 8 GB of RAM, a Radeon Pro 450, and 40 GB of storage.
The published Mac requirements are Intel-oriented, so do not call Path of Exile Apple-silicon-native without inspecting the installed binary. An M1 or M2 Mac may have an Intel/Rosetta route, but that should be verified against the current Steam build. The developer describes the game as not pay-to-win, although it remains a demanding online action RPG with optional purchases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Note: Path of Exile is already listed at number 3 in the quick-reference table. The 20 unique games are League of Legends, Dota 2, Path of Exile, Hearthstone, EVE Online, Albion Online, RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, Brawlhalla, Roblox, Among Us, Asphalt Legends, 0 A.D., OpenTTD, Luanti, The Battle for Wesnoth, Freeciv, Hedgewars, Teeworlds, and Xonotic. It is not an additional twenty-first title; this heading provides the action-RPG-specific buying advice without changing the list.
Best picks for each type of Mac
Best choices for an Intel Mac
Start with 0 A.D., OpenTTD, League of Legends, Hearthstone, EVE Online, Albion Online, or Xonotic, subject to the exact macOS version and graphics hardware. Wesnoth, Freeciv, Hedgewars, and Teeworlds may also be suitable, but the older projects need more maintenance and compatibility checking.

Do not treat “Intel Mac” as one hardware tier. A recent Intel Mac with Metal support and a supported macOS version is materially different from an older machine that cannot update to the required operating system. Apple’s transition away from Intel also means that a game working today may become harder to maintain after the final Intel macOS release.
Best choices for an M1 or M2 Mac
Prefer 0 A.D., OpenTTD, Albion Online, EVE Online, Roblox, Among Us, Luanti, Wesnoth, League of Legends, and Hearthstone. Among Us is specifically limited to M1 or later, while Albion Online and EVE Online explicitly document Apple-silicon support in their current requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRuneScape, Old School RuneScape, Xonotic, and some Steam games may work through Rosetta. That is useful, but it is not the same as native Apple-silicon support. If you want the best long-term prospect, prioritize a Universal or Apple-silicon application.
Best choices for an M1 or M2 Mac with 8 GB of RAM
Favor Brawlhalla, Hearthstone, OpenTTD, Wesnoth, Freeciv, Luanti, and modest-sized 0 A.D. matches. Roblox can also be a good fit when you choose experiences with simple graphics. Avoid assuming that a game’s minimum RAM figure guarantees a smooth experience: screen resolution, background applications, world size, browser tabs, and large multiplayer battles all affect headroom.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check whether your Mac is compatible
1. Identify Intel or Apple silicon
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select About This Mac.
- An Apple-silicon Mac shows Chip, followed by a name such as M1 or M2.
- An Intel Mac shows Processor, followed by an Intel processor name.
Apple documents this exact distinction in its Mac identification guide.
2. Check the game application’s architecture
- Select the installed game application in Finder.
- Choose File > Get Info, or press Command-I.
- Read the Kind field.
- Application (Intel): Intel-only; it uses Rosetta on Apple silicon.
- Application (Universal): includes Intel and Apple-silicon versions.
- Application (Apple silicon): requires an Apple-silicon Mac.
These labels come from Apple’s Rosetta and application-architecture documentation.
3. Install Rosetta only when the game needs it
Connect to the internet and open the Intel-based game. If Rosetta is not installed, macOS should prompt you. Select Install and authenticate with the Mac administrator password.
Rosetta can make many Intel applications usable on M1 and M2 Macs, and Apple says performance differences are often not noticeable. However, Apple recommends Universal or Apple-silicon versions for performance and future compatibility. An Intel launcher, anti-cheat system, plug-in, graphics API, old installer, authentication service, or 32-bit component can still prevent a game from working.
How to download these games safely
Mac App Store
Use the Mac App Store for Among Us and Asphalt Legends:
- Open the App Store.
- Search for the exact game title.
- Confirm that the listing identifies Mac compatibility.
- Read the minimum macOS and chip requirements.
- Select Get or the price button, then install.
Never infer Intel compatibility merely because an app appears in the Mac App Store. Among Us is explicitly M1-and-later only.
Steam
Use the official Steam client for Dota 2, Path of Exile, and Brawlhalla:
- Install Steam for macOS from the official Steam website.
- Open the exact game’s product page.
- Look for the Apple logo in the platform list.
- Read the current macOS requirements.
- After installation, check the application’s Kind field in Finder.
A game can still appear in Steam search results when its current Mac build is unavailable. Do not rely on an old listicle, a forum post, or a game that once had a 32-bit Mac version.
Publisher launchers
Use the publisher’s official site for League of Legends, Hearthstone, EVE Online, Albion Online, and the RuneScape games. Install the launcher, sign in or create the required account, and check the launcher’s architecture separately from the game’s architecture. This distinction is particularly important for RuneScape because the launcher can be Intel-based even when the game itself is playable on an Apple-silicon Mac.
Open-source downloads
Download 0 A.D., OpenTTD, Luanti, Wesnoth, Freeciv, Hedgewars, Teeworlds, and Xonotic from their official project pages. Avoid unofficial “free Mac game” mirrors that obscure whether a file is current, modified, or actually intended for macOS.

What “free” means for each type of game
Free-to-play
League of Legends, Dota 2, Path of Exile, Hearthstone, Albion Online, Brawlhalla, Roblox, Among Us, and Asphalt Legends can be started without paying, but may include cosmetics, premium currencies, battle passes, advertising, random items, time-saving purchases, or paid content. EVE Online has a free Alpha account but a paid Omega membership.
Free core with optional membership
RuneScape and Old School RuneScape have substantial free-to-play portions, but membership unlocks additional content. Calling either game “completely free” would be misleading.
Free and open source
0 A.D., OpenTTD, Luanti, The Battle for Wesnoth, Freeciv, Hedgewars, and Xonotic are the clearest choices if you want to avoid a paid progression system or a commercial launcher. Some can still accept donations or offer optional community content, but downloading and playing the core projects does not require buying a subscription.

Why some popular free games are not in the main list
Windows-only games such as Fortnite, Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Overwatch 2 should not be presented as native Mac games unless a current official Mac client exists. A Mac user may still access some Windows titles through GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Boosteroid, CrossOver, Wine, Parallels, or another workaround.
Those options belong in a separate cloud-gaming or compatibility-layer guide. Cloud gaming requires a reliable, low-latency internet connection and streams the game rather than running it on the Mac. Compatibility layers require more setup and can break after game, launcher, or macOS updates. Anti-cheat systems can also block a game even when the graphics layer works.
Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit is primarily a developer evaluation and porting tool, not a one-click consumer game launcher. Its existence should not be used as proof that a Windows game has native Mac support.
Common compatibility problems and fixes
An M1 or M2 Mac says Rosetta is required
That means the application is Intel-based, not necessarily broken. Install Rosetta when macOS offers the prompt, then retry the game. If it still fails, update the game and launcher, check for an anti-cheat or plug-in problem, and inspect the application’s Kind field.
Recommended Free Tools
An Intel game launches and later stops working
Possible causes include an outdated launcher, unsupported anti-cheat, Intel-only plug-ins, unsupported graphics APIs, 32-bit components, an old authentication service, or a future macOS change. Reinstalling Rosetta will not fix every one of these problems.
Apple says Rosetta remains available through macOS 27. From macOS 28, its remaining functionality is expected to be mainly limited to certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel frameworks. That is why Intel-only games should be treated as time-sensitive recommendations.
A Mac App Store game is unavailable
Read the compatibility section instead of assuming the listing supports all Macs. Among Us is the clear example: its Mac listing requires M1 or later, so an Intel Mac cannot use that listing. Asphalt Legends has a Mac listing but does not establish blanket Intel support; verify before installing.
Steam shows the game but no Mac version
Open the product page and inspect the live platform icons and system requirements. A Windows-only result, a community post, or an abandoned Mac build does not count as current native Mac availability.
A game meets the minimum requirements but plays poorly
Minimum requirements generally describe the ability to launch or run at low settings, not a guaranteed high-resolution or high-refresh experience. Do not assume every M1 Mac delivers the same result: GPU core count, RAM, display resolution, macOS version, background tasks, world size, and multiplayer scale all matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these Mac games really free?
Some are completely free and open source, including 0 A.D., OpenTTD, Luanti, Wesnoth, Freeciv, Hedgewars, and Xonotic. Others are free-to-play and sell cosmetics, premium currencies, subscriptions, advertising, or optional content. RuneScape and Old School RuneScape have substantial free sections but require membership for their full experiences.
Can an Intel Mac play Among Us?
Not through the current Mac App Store listing. Among Us requires macOS 11 or later and a Mac with an M1 chip or later, so it is Apple-silicon-only on Mac.
Does every Intel Mac game work on an M1 or M2 Mac?
No. Intel applications can often run through Rosetta, but launchers, anti-cheat systems, 32-bit components, graphics APIs, authentication services, and future macOS changes can prevent individual games from working. Check the application’s Kind field in Finder.

No. Rosetta translates Intel Mac applications so they can run on Apple-silicon Macs. A Universal or Apple-silicon application is preferable for long-term compatibility, and Apple’s future macOS plans make Intel-only games a time-sensitive choice.
Are cloud-streamed Windows games native Mac games?
No. Cloud gaming can let you play a Windows title on a Mac, but the game runs on a remote computer and is streamed to your Mac. It requires a suitable internet connection and should be labeled separately from native Mac games.
The Bottom Line
The safest free Mac games are not necessarily the newest or most graphically demanding. For dependable Intel and Apple-silicon support, choose 0 A.D., OpenTTD, Albion Online, EVE Online, or Wesnoth after checking the current macOS requirement. For competitive online play, start with League of Legends or Brawlhalla. For an M1 or M2 Mac, prefer Universal or Apple-silicon builds and treat Rosetta as a useful compatibility bridge—not a permanent guarantee.
