8 Best Free Drone Simulators for Windows PC (Updated August 2026)

FPV.SkyDive is the best free starting point for most Windows users, but the market also includes limited demos, browser tiers, open-source projects, and technical autopilot simulators. Here are eight options matched to FPV racing, freestyle, older PCs, transmitter testing, and robotics development.

FPV.SkyDive is the best free starting point for most Windows users. It offers a polished way to practice FPV racing and freestyle without buying a simulator, although some of its training, micro-drone, track-building, and soccer content is paid DLC. If you have an older PC, try FlowState; for a free standalone download, choose Real Drone Simulator.

There is an important catch: “free drone simulator” can mean a genuinely free program, a free-to-play game, a limited demo, a browser tier, or a technical robotics platform. This list separates those categories instead of pretending that eight equally complete free FPV simulators exist. Availability and product status below were checked against the supplied sources as of August 10, 2026.

Quick comparison

Simulator Free model Best for Windows access Main limitation
FPV.SkyDive Free-to-play Most beginner FPV pilots Steam Several useful features are paid DLC
FlowState Free-to-play and open source Older PCs and analog FPV feel Steam; source available Early Access and no recent developer updates
Real Drone Simulator Free for personal use General drone practice Native Windows download Still a developing project
FPV Drone Simulator Free-to-play Basic FPV practice Steam Basic, aging Early Access project
FPV Freerider Demo Free demo Testing a transmitter Direct Windows download One scene and deliberately limited flying
Myoka FPV Demo Free playable demo Trying a newer visual project Steam demo In development, not the full simulator
FPVSIM Starter Free browser tier No-install testing and rate/PID experimentation Windows browser Limited features and online dependence
Microsoft AirSim Free and open source Autonomy, sensors, and flight-controller development Windows binaries Technical setup; not a casual FPV game

Before you choose: what does “free” mean?

These products do not all offer the same deal:

  • Free full simulator: the core program is available without buying a license.
  • Free-to-play: the basic simulator costs nothing, but extra aircraft, maps, modes, or tools may be paid.
  • Free demo: the developer deliberately limits scenery, vehicles, modes, or configuration.
  • Free online tier: the simulator runs in a browser, usually with account, usage, or feature limits.
  • Free open-source framework: there is no software license fee, but installation and configuration may require programming, SDKs, or autopilot software.

For ordinary FPV practice, a proper radio transmitter is more useful than a keyboard or standard gamepad. A controller can still be a good way to learn basic orientation and decide whether you enjoy the hobby.

Perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, Christmas, back-to-school, or as a "welcome to FPV" gift

FPV.SkyDive is the default recommendation for most people who want to practice FPV flying on a Windows PC without paying. It includes racing and freestyle flying, controller calibration, single-player and multiplayer modes, and leaderboard or contest-oriented activity. Installation is straightforward through Steam, and the presentation is more polished than most no-cost alternatives.

The important qualification is that the free base game is not the same as a completely free content package. Paid DLC includes Drone Soccer, Track Builder, Flight School, and the Micro Drone Edition. The free core is still useful, but do not expect every lesson, aircraft type, or construction tool to be included.

Hardware requirements and controller support

Steam lists a minimum of 64-bit Windows, an Intel Core i5-class processor, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 650-class graphics card with 2 GB of VRAM, DirectX 11, and approximately 2 GB of storage. Steam also says a transmitter is preferred for the best experience. ORQA’s official product page lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck availability, but this article focuses on Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A gamepad works for trying the simulator, but a USB-connected FPV radio is the better choice if you want stick movements to transfer to a real quad. Calibrate the controller in the simulator and confirm that the throttle axis behaves as expected before starting acro practice.

Choose FPV.SkyDive if: you want the easiest, most presentable first download and do not mind that some content is paid.

2. FlowState — best for an older PC and analog FPV feel

Free status: Free-to-play and open source
Best for: Low-spec Windows PCs, racing practice, and analog-goggle-style presentation
Maintenance label: Early Access; aging development status

FlowState is built around the view and feel of a racing drone rather than cinematic graphics. Its design emphasizes low input latency, realistic FPV aspect ratios, analog-style video interference, editable maps, single-player flying, online PvP, and a level editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its published minimum requirements are modest: Windows 10, a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7-class processor, 4 GB of RAM, GTX 650 graphics, OpenGL 3.3, and roughly 1 GB of storage. Meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee a smooth frame rate, but FlowState is a sensible candidate for an older computer that struggles with newer Unreal Engine simulators.

The downside is significant. Steam still labels it Early Access and warns that the last developer update was more than three years ago. The project is described as open source, and the GitHub repository provides source access, but downloading source code is not the same as receiving a polished, actively maintained installer. The project may feel unfinished, and source-based setup can involve opening the project with UPBGE.

Choose FlowState if: low latency and a lightweight analog FPV presentation matter more to you than modern graphics or active support.

3. Real Drone Simulator — best free standalone download

Free status: Free for personal use
Best for: General drone flying, racing, time trials, and transmitter testing
Maintenance label: Developing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Real Drone Simulator is the strongest alternative for readers who want a free Windows download outside Steam. Its official site says it is free for personal use and supports most RC transmitters, game controllers, and touchscreen input. Listed modes include Free Flight, Time Trial, and Racing.

  • 【Gift for FPV Gamers Who Hate Crashing】Searching for the perfect present for a drone enthusiast, FPV simulator gamer, or beginner looking to master flight? No batteries, no complex setup—just instant fun and skill growth.Whether they’re a hobbyist or a serious pilot, this gift shows you understand their passion. Perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, Christmas, back-to-school, or as a "welcome to FPV" gift

The developer says the physics engine uses real-life physics formulas and measured drone and component parameters. That is a description of the project’s approach, not independent proof that it is more realistic than every competitor. The site also uses forward-looking language around features such as a custom map editor and multiplayer, so check what is present in the current build rather than treating planned features as guaranteed.

PC requirements and caveats

The recommended desktop setup is a four-core processor, 8 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible graphics card with 4 GB of VRAM, and an SSD. The site also lists Android support and describes macOS, Linux, and iOS as future targets.

Real Drone Simulator is still a development-stage product. An older publicly available manual describes a pre-alpha build with only one VR level, so that document should not be confused with the current website’s feature claims. Download the current Windows build from the official site rather than relying on third-party mirrors, which may host obsolete versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Real Drone Simulator if: you want a no-cost native Windows option with several flying modes and broad input-device support, and you can tolerate uneven polish between builds.

4. FPV Drone Simulator by DreamEscape — a basic free Steam option

Free status: Free-to-play
Best for: Trying basic FPV flying without paying
Maintenance label: Early Access and relatively basic

FPV Drone Simulator by DreamEscape is a free Steam listing for Windows with environments including an abandoned factory, a free-ride setting, and a fantasy forest. Steam metadata lists single-player, multiplayer, online PvP, full controller support, and Early Access.

This is a fallback rather than a top recommendation. The project dates back to 2017 and is comparatively basic beside newer commercial simulators. Current SteamDB compatibility data also says that single-player gameplay requires an active internet connection, an inconvenient limitation for an ostensibly downloadable simulator. Store metadata and compatibility behavior can change, so check the current listing before installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose it because a store page uses the word “simulation” and assume it offers deep aircraft configuration, mature physics, or an active multiplayer population. It is best treated as a free way to sample simple FPV flying on modest hardware.

5. FPV Freerider Demo — best for testing a transmitter

Free status: Free demo
Best for: Checking whether a radio or gamepad works before buying
Maintenance label: Established paid simulator with a limited demo

The official FPV Freerider page provides a Windows demo specifically useful for testing controller compatibility. It includes one scenery and a deliberately sluggish quad setup, so it is an evaluation tool rather than a full free simulator.

The complete simulator supports FPV and line-of-sight flying, self-leveling and acro modes, multiple flight modes, six sceneries, procedural racetrack generation, and detailed physics and input settings. The full Windows version is sold for $5.99 or more on the developer’s itch.io page. The developer lists compatibility with many RC radios, simulator controllers, gamepads, and USB controllers, but explicitly recommends trying the demo because individual hardware compatibility varies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not judge the full simulator’s flight model solely by the demo’s slow default quad. The demo’s most valuable feature is that it lets you verify the connection between Windows, your transmitter, and the simulator before spending money.

Choose FPV Freerider Demo if: you already own a radio and want a quick, low-risk compatibility test.

6. Myoka FPV Demo — best newer visual demo

Free status: Free playable demo
Best for: Trying a visually ambitious, newer FPV project
Maintenance label: In development

Myoka FPV offers a free playable Steam demo, and the developer’s site says no account is required. The demo contains multiple in-progress levels. The project is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and advertises Betaflight-integrated physics, along with placing, arming, flying, and tracking the drone.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes Myoka worth watching, but not a safe substitute for a mature simulator. The full project is still in development, and the developer sells a separate paid beta-tester option. Claims such as “most realistic FPV flight simulator ever built” are developer marketing and should not be treated as an independently verified comparison.

Expect unfinished content and physics that may change. Use the demo to assess the look, controls, and direction of the project—not to conclude that it provides definitive real-world flight transfer.

7. FPVSIM Starter — best no-install browser option

Free status: Free online Starter tier
Best for: Quick access, controller testing, and rate/PID experimentation
Maintenance label: Online service with paid upgrades

FPVSIM runs in a browser, so Windows users do not need a conventional desktop installation. Its site advertises maps, adjustable rates, PID-related configuration, leaderboards, replay controls, controller support, and graphics settings. The Starter plan is free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free tier is limited. It includes trial access to the drone simulator, solo timer features, local log analysis, two quads, and four synchronized configurations. It does not include advanced analysis or log upload, and full simulator access appears under paid plans. Therefore FPVSIM is a useful free online trial, not an unrestricted free desktop simulator.

Browser latency, internet quality, controller handling, and graphics performance can affect the experience. It is still a convenient choice when you want to test FPV controls immediately or avoid installing a large game.

Choose FPVSIM Starter if: you value instant browser access and limited analysis tools more than a complete offline simulator.

8. Microsoft AirSim — best for developers and autonomy research

Free status: Free and open source
Best for: Sensors, computer vision, AI, APIs, PX4, ArduPilot, and simulated vehicles
Maintenance label: Community-maintained; technical compatibility varies

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft AirSim is not a beginner FPV game. It is an open-source Unreal Engine simulation platform for drones, cars, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and autonomous-vehicle research. It provides Windows binaries, vehicle-state and image APIs, and programming interfaces for C++, Python, C#, and Java. It supports software-in-the-loop with PX4 and ArduPilot and hardware-in-the-loop with PX4.

  • Spektrum Interlink Dx Simulator Controller With Usb Plug, Spmrftx1
  • Brand: Spektrum
  • Package Height: 14.22 Inches
  • Item Package Weight: 1.05 Pounds

AirSim is the right choice when the question is “Can I test a flight controller, camera pipeline, sensor model, or autonomy algorithm?” It is the wrong choice when the question is “Can I quickly practice racing gates with my radio?” PX4’s AirSim documentation warns that AirSim is community-supported and may not work with current PX4 versions.

Basic AirSim and ArduPilot path on Windows

  1. Download a Windows binary from the AirSim project and extract it.
  2. Launch one of the precompiled environments.
  3. Use an RC controller for manual input, or use the API for programmatic control.
  4. For ArduPilot integration, create or edit DocumentsAirSimsettings.json.
  5. Use the documented configuration as a starting point:
{
  "SettingsVersion": 1.2,
  "LogMessagesVisible": true,
  "SimMode": "Multirotor",
  "OriginGeopoint": {
    "Latitude": -35.363261,
    "Longitude": 149.165230,
    "Altitude": 583
  },
  "Vehicles": {
    "Copter": {
      "VehicleType": "ArduCopter",
      "UseSerial": false,
      "LocalHostIp": "127.0.0.1",
      "UdpIp": "127.0.0.1",
      "UdpPort": 9003,
      "ControlPort": 9002
    }
  }
}

The documented ArduPilot launch command is:

sim_vehicle.py -v ArduCopter -f airsim-copter --console --map

This requires the ArduPilot SITL toolchain and is not a normal beginner installation. Unreal Engine versions, compiler dependencies, graphics drivers, autopilot versions, and Windows or WSL configuration can all affect setup.

Free technical alternatives that serve a different audience

Webots — free robotics simulation

Webots is a free, open-source robotics simulator under the Apache 2.0 license. It supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 64-bit, and controllers can be written in C, C++, Java, Python, or MATLAB. The documentation lists a minimum dual-core 2 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, and an OpenGL 3.3-capable graphics adapter with at least 512 MB of graphics memory. Installation information is available in the Windows guide, with system details in the requirements documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Webots is excellent for modeling sensors, environments, controllers, and autonomous behavior. It is not a ready-made FPV racing game, so a hobby pilot should choose FPV.SkyDive instead.

Mission Planner SITL — best for ArduPilot missions

Mission Planner’s Simulation tab provides software-in-the-loop testing for ArduPilot vehicles. Open Mission Planner, select Simulation, choose a vehicle type and frame/model, select stable or development firmware when prompted, and start the simulation. A joystick can be used for manual control.

Mission Planner SITL is useful for waypoints, parameters, telemetry, failsafe behavior, and expected autopilot behavior without risking a real aircraft. It can also work with physical devices such as GPS, RC equipment, and rangefinders attached to Windows serial ports. It is not a substitute for an FPV acro trainer.

PX4 and Gazebo are also valuable technical tools, but Windows support depends on the exact PX4, Gazebo, and toolchain version. Current workflows may involve WSL or other development environments, so do not treat “PX4 with Gazebo” as a simple native Windows download without checking the current PX4 simulation documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which simulator matches your type of flying?

Your goal Best starting choice What it teaches
FPV racing FPV.SkyDive or FlowState Throttle management, gates, racing lines, yaw, roll, and lap consistency
FPV freestyle FPV.SkyDive Acro control, rolls, flips, dives, recovery, and camera-angle awareness
Camera-drone basics Real Drone Simulator Hovering, orientation, smooth movement, takeoff, and landing
Transmitter testing FPV Freerider Demo USB connection, axis recognition, calibration, and basic stick control
Browser practice FPVSIM Starter Basic FPV control, rates, and limited log analysis
Autopilot missions Mission Planner SITL Waypoints, parameters, telemetry, firmware behavior, and failsafes
Computer vision or autonomy AirSim or Webots Simulated sensors, images, APIs, controllers, and autonomous behavior

These categories are not interchangeable. A simulator for autopilot missions does not necessarily teach the fast manual stick work required for FPV racing, while an FPV racing game does not reproduce GPS failsafes, mission planning, or a flight controller’s full parameter system.

Is a gamepad good enough?

For trying a simulator, yes. For serious FPV muscle memory, use a radio transmitter.

  • Gamepad: adequate for basic orientation, menus, and deciding whether you enjoy the hobby.
  • FPV radio: strongly preferable for acro mode, throttle control, and transferable stick habits.
  • Keyboard: useful for menus or basic testing, but not a serious substitute for analog controls.

Look for a transmitter that appears to Windows as a USB joystick or HID device. Brand names alone do not guarantee compatibility. Channel order, throttle direction, dead zones, and calibration matter.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Controller setup and troubleshooting on Windows

  1. Connect the controller with a data-capable USB cable. Some cables only provide power.
  2. Put the radio into its USB joystick or HID mode if it offers multiple USB modes.
  3. Press Win + R, enter joy.cpl, and press Enter.
  4. Confirm that Windows sees the device and that the primary axes move through their full range.
  5. Open the simulator’s controller or calibration menu.
  6. Calibrate the sticks and identify throttle, yaw, pitch, and roll.
  7. Verify throttle direction. A reversed throttle can make a new pilot think the flight model is broken.
  8. Avoid multiple remapping layers if the simulator receives duplicate, delayed, or distorted input.
  9. If the radio is not detected, try another cable, USB port, or USB joystick mode.
  10. Test a standard gamepad. If the gamepad works and the radio does not, the problem is probably the transmitter mode, cable, driver, or remapping software.

The FPV Freerider developer specifically recommends using its demo to test controller compatibility. No simulator can promise support for every radio or USB controller.

  1. Five minutes: hover or maintain controlled altitude and learn the throttle response.
  2. Ten minutes: practice yaw and orientation without chasing speed.
  3. Ten minutes: fly slow figure-eights and make deliberate turns.
  4. Ten minutes: practice landing, recovering from a low approach, and stopping safely.
  5. After that: begin gates, acro maneuvers, rolls, or freestyle only when basic control feels repeatable.
  6. Track progress: repeat the same map and configuration so lap consistency, crash frequency, and recovery time have meaning.

Simulator practice can build stick coordination, orientation, throttle control, repetition, and some emergency-recovery habits. It cannot fully reproduce outdoor wind, turbulence, propwash, visual depth, radio-link problems, battery behavior, damaged propellers, hardware failures, legal airspace, or the hazards posed to people and property.

PC requirements: minimum does not mean smooth

Use each developer’s published requirements rather than assuming that every simulator needs the same hardware:

  • FPV.SkyDive: Steam lists 64-bit Windows, an Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, GTX 650-class graphics with 2 GB VRAM, DirectX 11, and 2 GB of storage as minimum requirements.
  • FlowState: Steam lists Windows 10, a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7-class processor, 4 GB RAM, GTX 650 graphics, OpenGL 3.3, and 1 GB of storage.
  • Real Drone Simulator: the official site recommends a four-core CPU, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11 graphics with 4 GB VRAM, and an SSD.
  • Webots: its documentation lists a dual-core 2 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, and OpenGL 3.3 graphics with at least 512 MB as minimum requirements.

For training, stable input response is more important than maximum visual quality. If a computer technically meets the minimum but runs poorly, reduce resolution, shadows, anti-aliasing, and draw distance; close background applications; update graphics drivers; and use an SSD where possible. Do not sacrifice physics or input responsiveness just to make the graphics prettier. FlowState may be worth trying on a weaker machine.

Can I use a normal Xbox or PlayStation-style gamepad with a drone simulator?

Usually, yes, for basic testing and orientation practice. A gamepad is less suitable for serious FPV acro training because its spring-centered throttle and stick layout do not reproduce the feel of a typical FPV radio. Windows should detect the device through joy.cpl, after which you can calibrate it inside the simulator.

Which free drone simulator is best for FPV racing?

FPV.SkyDive is the best first choice for most beginners because it is easy to install and includes racing and freestyle practice. FlowState is a good lightweight alternative if you prefer an analog FPV presentation or have an older PC.

Are free drone simulators realistic enough to replace flying a real drone?

No. They can help with stick coordination, orientation, throttle control, repetition, and some recovery habits, but they cannot fully reproduce wind, turbulence, battery behavior, hardware failures, radio-link problems, legal requirements, or real-world safety risks.

Is AirSim suitable for learning FPV freestyle?

Not usually. AirSim is designed mainly for robotics, sensors, computer vision, autonomy, APIs, and PX4 or ArduPilot integration. It is a strong technical platform but much less convenient than FPV.SkyDive or FlowState for manual FPV racing and freestyle practice.

The Bottom Line

Start with FPV.SkyDive if you want the easiest free FPV simulator on Windows. Choose FlowState for a lightweight analog-style experience, or Real Drone Simulator for a free standalone download. Use FPV Freerider Demo to test your transmitter, FPVSIM Starter when you want a browser option, and AirSim, Webots, or Mission Planner SITL only when your goal is robotics or autopilot development rather than ordinary FPV flying.
