For most players, Feng Min, Meg Thomas, Dwight Fairfield, Bill Overbeck, and Lara Croft are strong places to start. This is a practical recommendation list, not a claim that one Survivor model has better movement, hitboxes, or escape odds. Dead by Daylight pits four cooperating Survivors against one Killer; your choice matters chiefly through the character’s associated perks and how well they suit the way you play.
The ranking weighs broad usefulness, approachability, and value as a character to unlock. A community ranking snapshot for patch 10.1.2a placed Taurie Cain, Feng Min, Lara Croft, Ada Wong, and Bill Overbeck in its top five, but that is a dated community signal—not an official tier list or proof that those characters survive more often. The order below is an editorial recommendation, not a universal power ranking.
How to read this ranking
Dead by Daylight’s characters have distinct backstories and associated ability sets, but the evidence available here does not establish that their character models have different innate movement statistics or hitboxes. Treat Survivor choice as a way to select perks and a character you enjoy—not as a standalone boost to your odds of escaping.
Perk strength changes with balance updates. Behaviour’s May 2022 discussion of perks such as Dead Hard, Borrowed Time, Decisive Strike, Iron Will, and Self-Care describes a historical meta, not a current recommendation. A community-voted DBDVault snapshot labelled patch 10.1.2a lists Lithe, Fixated, Déjà Vu, Dead Hard, and Sprint Burst among its S-tier perks. Those ratings are time-bound and do not make every character associated with a perk equally strong. Check the live client or current patch notes for exact effects before building around a perk.

- Bring the game to life with 10 hauntingly detailed miniature figurines!

The 20 best Survivors to play
-
Feng Min
A broadly sensible first choice and a high-ranked pick in the patch 10.1.2a community snapshot. Feng is an easy recommendation if you want a popular Survivor without treating community ratings as a guarantee of stronger results.
-
Bill Overbeck
Bill also appears in that snapshot’s top five. He is a good choice if you want to start with an established Survivor and explore his associated perks; check their current descriptions in the client before deciding which to build around.
-
Lara Croft
Lara ranked in the snapshot’s top five, making her a strong option for players choosing among the currently highlighted community picks. That placement is a community opinion for a specific patch, not an official assessment.

Meg Thomas
A straightforward recommendation for a new player who would rather learn the match before chasing a precise build. She is a useful starting point for trying a Survivor’s associated perks and discovering which play style feels comfortable.
-
Dwight Fairfield
A solid early choice if you want to learn the cooperative side of the game. As with every entry here, choose him for his character and perk options, not because the game establishes a special innate advantage for his model.
-
Taurie Cain
Taurie led the DBDVault patch 10.1.2a community snapshot. That makes her worth considering if you want to follow that snapshot’s preferences, while keeping in mind that it is community-voted and may not reflect a later balance state.
-
Ada Wong
Ada rounded out the snapshot’s top five. She is a reasonable pick for players drawn to the character or the associated perk set, but her placement should not be read as evidence of a higher personal escape rate.

Claudette Morel
Claudette is a recognizable option for someone starting out and comparing the feel of different Survivors. Review her current perk descriptions before spending resources or selecting a build around any one effect.
-
Jake Park
Jake is a worthwhile pick if you want to try a different character and evaluate his associated perks for yourself. There is not enough evidence here to claim that he is stronger in solo queue or coordinated teams.
-
Kate Denson
Kate makes the list as a flexible character to consider when choosing whom to play or unlock. The right reason to select her is whether her current perk options fit your preferences, rather than any assumed character-specific survival bonus.
-
Rebecca Chambers
Rebecca is another character to consider when exploring available perk sets. Because perk effects can change, use the current client text—not older tier lists—as the authority for what her perks do now.

Yui Kimura
Yui is a reasonable option for players looking beyond the most prominent picks. Her position is an editorial recommendation; no current solo-versus-team performance comparison is established here.
-
Nea Karlsson
Nea offers another character and associated perk set to explore. If you are choosing a purchase specifically for perks, compare their current in-game descriptions with the perks you already own before deciding.

Mikaela Reid
Mikaela is worth considering if her character and current perk set appeal to you. Do not assume a community rating for an individual perk is a rating of every Survivor connected to it.
-
David King
David is a sensible character to try if you are curious about his associated perks. The ranking does not imply a particular level of difficulty or a verified advantage in any match type.

Gabriel Soma
Gabriel is a further option for players comparing characters by their perk sets. Check current descriptions and unlock requirements, as availability and effects can differ by character and change over time.
-
Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage is a pick for players who want to try his character and associated perks. Choose him for that experience, not because the evidence here supports a claim that his character model escapes more often.
-
Alan Wake
Alan Wake is another character to assess by current perk text and personal preference. This list cannot establish whether he performs better in solo queue or with a coordinated group.
-
Kwon Tae-Young
Kwon Tae-Young arrived in the official 9.5.0 patch notes published March 12, 2026. Those notes describe Flow State as gaining tokens as generators are completed, with each token increasing totem, healing, and unhook speeds; confirm the live perk text because updates can change mechanics.

Yun-Jin Lee
Yun-Jin rounds out the list as another character whose current perks may suit a particular player. She is not a measured bottom-tier Survivor; the available evidence does not support a reliable performance ranking across all characters.
Which Survivor should you choose?
If you are new
Start with a character whose perks you can understand and whose play style you enjoy. Try a few matches before committing to a build; learning objectives, teamwork, and when to disengage matters more than chasing a ranking snapshot.
If you are choosing whom to unlock
Compare the current perk descriptions for characters you do not own, then prioritize a perk that fills a real gap in your loadout. Do not buy a character solely because a community list places them high: ratings are patch-specific, and a perk’s position is not a guarantee of results.
If you play mostly solo or with friends
Team context can change what feels useful, but the available evidence does not establish a reliable character-by-character solo-queue or coordinated-team advantage. Make the choice based on your own matches and the current perk text.
What rankings and survival statistics can—and cannot—tell you
DBDVault’s patch 10.1.2a perk page reported 2,479 community ratings when retrieved on October 4, 2026. That count describes engagement with its ranking page, not a scientific survey or a measurement of Survivor escape rates. Its S-tier labels are community votes and can change.
Behaviour’s developer stats page says its approximate average target is a 60% Killer kill rate. That is an overall balance target, not a Survivor-specific success threshold and not evidence that a particular character improves escape odds. Behaviour also cautions that survival rates do not tell the whole story: a player may sacrifice themselves to save a teammate. Its listed perk percentages describe the likelihood a perk appears in a loadout, not how effective it is.
A physical Dead by Daylight board game also exists, with Survivors cooperating to repair generators, power exit gates, and escape while another player takes the Killer role. It is a tabletop adaptation, not a video-game accessory.
