For a Droplet kept deployed around the clock, DigitalOcean lists its example Basic plan (1 GiB RAM, 1 shared vCPU) at $6 per month and its entry CPU-Optimized plan (4 GiB RAM, 2 dedicated vCPUs) at $42 per month. At unchanged list prices, that is $72 versus $504 over 12 months, before add-ons, taxes, or outbound transfer overages. These are compute-plan costs—not a tested or guaranteed end-to-end cost for a YouTube stream.
Basic versus CPU-Optimized: listed plan costs
DigitalOcean’s pricing page, checked on October 3, 2026, lists these representative configurations. The figures are plan prices, not the result of a YouTube streaming benchmark.
| Configuration | CPU | RAM / vCPU | Included transfer | Listed hourly rate | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Shared | 1 GiB / 1 | 1,000 GiB | $0.00893 | $6 |
| CPU-Optimized | Dedicated | 4 GiB / 2 | 4,000 GiB | $0.06250 | $42 |
The CPU-Optimized example costs seven times the Basic example per month. It also has four times the RAM and transfer allowance, as well as twice the vCPUs—and dedicated rather than shared CPU—so this is not a like-for-like resource comparison. DigitalOcean describes Basic as a lower-cost fit for workloads that can use shared CPU and tolerate variable CPU levels. It positions CPU-Optimized for fast, consistent performance, including media streaming; that guidance does not establish which plan a particular YouTube setup needs.
What 24/7 costs over time
For a bundled CPU Droplet that remains deployed throughout the month, the monthly cap is the useful comparison: $6 for the cited Basic example or $42 for the cited CPU-Optimized example. At unchanged prices, the compute line over 12 months is $72 and $504, respectively—a difference of $36 per month or $432 per year.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
DigitalOcean documentation says bundled CPU Droplets are billed per second, with a 60-second or $0.01 minimum, and usage capped at 672 hours per month. Multiplying the displayed hourly rate by every hour in a calendar month would not give the appropriate full-month comparison because of that cap. A powered-off Droplet still incurs compute charges while its resources remain reserved; destroying it stops those compute charges.
The annual figures are calculations from the cited monthly prices, not separately published annual prices. They assume list prices do not change and exclude add-ons, taxes, and any charge for outbound transfer beyond the included team pool.

Transfer allowances and possible overages
The example Basic plan includes 1,000 GiB and the example CPU-Optimized plan includes 4,000 GiB of transfer. DigitalOcean pools outbound transfer across a team’s Droplets; outbound usage beyond the team’s included pool is priced at $0.01/GiB, while inbound transfer is free.
That means a Droplet’s individual allowance is not the whole bandwidth calculation: other Droplets in the same team affect how much of the pool remains. The actual amount used by a YouTube stream depends on its bitrate and audience-delivery setup. The cited official pricing and documentation do not specify those inputs, so they do not support a monthly stream-data estimate or a total bill for a particular channel.

Which plan fits a streaming workload?
Choose Basic only if shared CPU fits the actual workload
Basic is the lower-priced example and may suit a workload that does not need dedicated compute. The lower price alone does not show that it can sustain a particular streaming or encoding process. Consider whether the Droplet is only running a lightweight relay or is doing CPU-heavy work; the available DigitalOcean material does not provide a YouTube-specific minimum configuration or a measured Basic-versus-CPU-Optimized test.
Consider CPU-Optimized when sustained CPU matters
DigitalOcean identifies CPU-Optimized as a dedicated-CPU option for applications needing fast, consistent performance and specifically mentions media streaming. Its documentation describes the plan family as having roughly a 2:1 memory-to-CPU ratio. This is provider positioning, not proof that a YouTube stream requires this tier. The premium is most relevant when the workload actually needs sustained CPU capacity or CPU-heavy processing such as encoding or transcoding.

Keep the comparison scoped
The prices above cover the cited Droplet configurations, not every possible component of a streaming setup. They do not establish the cost of storage, other services, taxes, or excess transfer, and they do not show that either configuration will meet a particular channel’s performance requirements. DigitalOcean prices and billing terms can change; recheck the official pricing and documentation before choosing a plan.
